Engine manufacturers design their engines around the type of oil that they intend to use in it. Not the other way round. The oil journals and clearances are specific to the type of oil that they intend on using. So you're welcome to put diesel oil in your bike, and it will probably work fine, but its not really designed for it.

No I’m literally telling you that some bikes use the EXACT same Diesel oil rebranded as motorcycle oil.

Motorcycle oil has anti foaming agents that car oil does not need, so when you're revving at 12K RPM the oil doesn't churn up. Car oil doesn't need this because most car engines barely rev past 6000. Not to mention car oil doesn't need to worry about shear resistance caused by meshing gears, because its no where near the gearbox. These additives in bike oil will make your bike engine and gearbox last longer than using car oil. So by all means, make use of car oil if you have to, but neither the manufacturer nor any reputable mechanic would recommend it.

I never said use car oil...and I’m not advocating it.

But as per your very example not all bikes even rev to 12k either and it’s those very same bikes that use the exact diesel oil I’m referring to above.

My point was that all bikes aren’t the same and in many cases oils are simply branded differently on the shelf while being the same thing under the hood for a given purpose.

Yes, so most bikes then. Your GS need not apply to this then :p But 90% of motorcycles do share their oil with the transmission. For those bikes, this applies.

Erm...the GS also shares it transmission and engine oils.

Not true for all bikes.

And in many cases car diesel oil is very much the same thing as used in bikes, so to say don’t use “car oil” is a bit generic as it can be literally one and the same thing.

I'm curious as to this, since I own both a bike and a diesel car. You have more info?

And many oils meet both vw 504 and 507 standards. One is for diesels and one is for petrol.

Don't generalize. Just put in what the manufacturer recommends, whatever that may be

Why are you quoting me? I didn't generalize anything.
I'm the one asking for more information. I find it interesting, is all.

Quoting you in relation to the diesel petrol story.
The generalize was for everyone

Well I can't comment for all brands but in the case of BMW Advantec Pro / Ultimate it's a Castrol Diesel oil rebranded for BMW and motorcycle use and these days I believe they use Shell instead.

Inversely if you pay close attention you'll see many of the fancy oils uses by Porsche and the like on their cars as in fact JASO MA2 oils as well.

MA2 = Shared Gearbox/Engine Oil and supporting catalytic converter.
MB = Separated Gearbox / Engine Oils.

Will I go put in the Castrol diesel version to save some money? Probably not because the BMW version is already quite reasonable.

Ultimately though there isn't really a "diesel" oil and a "petrol" oil, but rather a case of being fit for purpose and specification.

If the codes on the back match the owner's manual then you are good to go.

You'll notice some don't even mention car/motorcycle or petrol/diesel for good reason...

http://rotella.shell.com/products/t6-full-synthetic.html

But if you jump through the menus on their page you'll find it's listed under Diesel oils. Yet spec for BMW LC motorcycles namely...SAE 5W-40, API SL/JASO MA2

OEM SPECIFICATIONS AND APPROVALS
5W-40
API: CK-4, CJ-4, CI-4 PLUS, CI-4, CH-4 ACEA E9, JASO DH-2, Cummins CES 20086; Volvo

Oh Whoops. What bike were u referring to?

Wasn’t referring to anything specifically.

Just pointing out that your statements aren’t a universal truth.

But as pointed out above even the BMW S1000 4-cylinder runs a diesel oil and that thing revs like mental.

My XR is running LiquiMoly 10w 50. Is that Diesel oil?

You knobs do realize you’re having an e-peen contest over engine oil, yes?

Different engines, different oils, use manufacturer spec where possible. Surely we can pack the tampax away and agree on the above?

You tosser do realise this is a forum, yes?

The purpose being where things get discussed and views argued. Surely we can't have a forum with it?
