The other Spirit ones don't look like anything special.

Btw, if anybody cared, they're designed here but manufactured in China, India etc.

Been using it for about 10 months, haven't had any issues with it at all.
 
Seriously guys you will and can of course do what you want but just consider that there is a hell of a lot that goes into helmet design and it has two primary purposes.

The hard outer shell is there to offer impact and abrasion protection from that very sandpaper like thing called tar.

The soft inner shell is there to stop your brain from bouncing against your skull and that is the most important part and the real science.

"It's fibreglass so very light" is the part that would have me the most worried as that means plenty of shortcuts were taken to achieve that at the price point.

Also these helmets aren't designed. They are simple Chinese clones. The image posted by Urban above is an almost exact replica of the Shoei GT Air.

Don't risk your life to save a few rands.

I'm not saying the big brands don't have an overinflated price, I completely agree that you often pay for the name.

But don't because of that do the silly thing of buying the cheapest thing on the market.

You'll find yourself dead or worse in a wheelchair for life for taking that shortcut.

The fact that I've never heard of it tells me everything. :)

Just take it from someone who has scraped his head against the tar multiple times now, you want the best you can reasonably afford.
 
I agree that sometimes you pay extra for the name brand. I had a look at the sharp safety ratings of helmets, compared my current HJC helmet with that which I'd love to have. Even my 3.5k helmet gets 5 stars in the safety rating, while 8k Shoei helmets get 3 or 4 stars. Ok, you'll maybe get extra features with Arai, Shoei, and the likes, and I'm not too sure how trust worthy those sharp ratings are, but my helmet is still going super strong, not one days issues from my 14 months/20000km with it...

day to day wear means nothing, how many times have you hit your head against the ground?
 
Saw the aftermath of a MC accident this morning , the guy died . :cry:
Tragic,looked like a truck turned in front of the guy he was lying there finished .

Helmets at around 4k bottom out protection wise. From there on you are paying for features, wind noise weight etc. The new Bell helmets with their rotational impact mitigation is seriously tempting buy at the moment. My current helmet is an Uvex Enduro and before that I had a BMW Enduro and Airoh S4.

Funny thing is, I've done the head-scraping thing in a Mars helmet before. Helmet did it's job very well, in fact.
Also done the head scraping thing with a Shark, also did it's job very well- but it looks a lot worse than the Mars. I do believe though that the off I had with the Shark was a worse one where head injury was concerned- so it's logical it would end up in a worse state.

It doesn't look like much, but imagine that was your head. Cheap doesn't always mean bad, and expensive doesn't always mean better. And vice versa. As it stands, Shark is pretty much middle ground as far as price is concerned anyway (at least from what I can recall).

In general, anyone looking for a helmet should do at least a little bit of research. If I'm honest, I'm a fan of the Shark helmets- and I wasn't always. I now have this POS el-cheapo HJC which was a big mistake, and right now I can't afford a new helmet even though I want one so very badly. The HJC's plastic lining in front of the sun visor came loose and no amount of glue will put it back together- I've tried. I'm also currently saving up to replace that lid- will probably buy a Shark again.
