Interesting (and a possible problem). I'd probably be looking at about R40k - R50k for my first bike when I eventually get around to getting one, but don't have that lying around. So would definitely need finance. I would imagine that a personal loan would have a higher interest rate than a financed vehicle?

If you get it from a dealer, bundle in your helmet and stuff to bump the price up to the threshold?

The same rules do not apply, I know, I tried. The bike had to be less than 10 years old. The other option is take the loan to finance a "leasure vehicle".
 
Why on earth is he financing R45k? Quicker to save that than what it is to pay it off.

If he is unable to afford to pay it cash how will he be able to afford the maintenance & repairs - any Blackbird will be at least 11 years old by now & although super reliable they will need maintenance & part replacement like front springs & rear shocks.

I had a 2001 FI one, and it ate through back tyres every 3-4k km's. At R2k a tyre these days that's an expense to be budgeted for every 4 to 6 weeks.

Regulator/rectifiers are known issues on the carb bikes & fry regularly - there are mods that can be done & alternative part sources, but they cost a fair bit of moolla. The FI models have a wiring plug that gets wet & corrodes - corrosion spreads through the loom & causes the FI light to come on & sometimes the bike stops running altogether.

Broken front mudguards are also common - there are nuts located in the mudguard itself & the threads corrode causing them to snap and or the mudguard to break. replacements no longer easy to come by.

Other than the above they are super reliable & will do high km's, but parts are becoming scarce & expensive.

How!? You may want to look at your riding habits. My dad has a Blackbird, and has had it for a long time now- they are not that heavy on tyres, not even remotely. Not even when he had +2 teeth on the rear and -1 on the front sprockets (for more acceleration). He bought his 'Bird with 45k km on the odo, it's now coming up on 100k km.

I'm also well aware of the issues stated regarding the carb models, but I didn't know about the FI models' niggles, thanks for the heads up on that.

I think the biggest issue my friend has regarding the financing (rcp) is the fact that his interest rate is 17.5%
Just because he can't buy cash doesn't mean he won't be able to afford the upkeep of the bike.

My riding habits are just fine. Bike was used once a month for a trip to Sabie & back & at least twice a month for long-ish brekkie runs. The odd trackday thrown in once a quarter - bike was far from ideal for track, scraped exhausts & fairings & destroyed peg "feelers".

It is a high speed tourer & was ridden as such. Ran it in over a weekend in & around Jozi, serviced & off to Sabie the following weekend. Did 4k km's the first month I owned her & one rear tyre. Perhaps your dad rides sedately in which case tyres will last forever.

I still see no logic in financing R45k for a 10+ year old bike, no matter what it is.

Sounds like you had a blast with your Blackbird.
I wouldn't say my dad rides sedately- it doesn't really match up with the sprocket change mentioned above. And he's also lost one of those footpeg feelers and scraped the exhaust- and that wasn't even on track. :crylaugh:

Hope the roads are dry at least when it's time to head back home.
 
Just finished a 3253km trip .... Durbs > Barkley Pass > Devils Bellows > Katberg Pass > Ado Elephant Park > Meiringspoort > Baviaanskloof > Swartberg Pass > De Hel > Steytlervile > Willowmoore > Cradock > Rhodes > Durbs ... 8 days! Was freaking Epic
