What is BMW charging? Brembo discs I'm guessing? Those will be expensive regardless of where you buy them with BMW probably always being cheapest.

What is JBT quoting on? SBS?
 
Anybody looking for a KLR in the cape town area? My bro is immigrating and selling his. Don't have all the specs but it is red and has roughly 50,000 km on it.

So I'm busy reading this thread from the beginning. Currently on page 180, long way to go.

I note that a few of you have, or had a Honda Nc7x0X series bike, and a lot praise has been handed out.

I am looking for a commuter, and this fills the gap. I looked at the bike a few years ago when I had an itch. But I am going to opt for the automatic version. The commute is 23km on the highway or back roads, either way it takes close to an hour to drive. A lot of bikes pass me daily while I queue for KMs for a traffic light.

I did a beginners biking course this weekend on a yamaha 200cc scrambler, and I can confirm I want to do this.

I wish I can afford the new NC750XD, the latest model is very good looking, but I dont think I want to finance this bike.

So here is my plan:

Book a learners test in the first week of April, I plan to write some time at the end of April.

Get all the gear, at a minimum: Helmet, gloves, jacket, boots. I will budget R20K for this.
Second round of gear later on: Easy overs, maybe XKulcha jeans, rain gear and Bluetooth system. Will buy as budget permits.
Then start looking for a 700 or 750 XD! I found a good looking second hand 2013 NC700XD for R55K, but my timing is off. I only have about 50K saved up at this stage.

After a year or so I will attempt my full license to get away from the high insurance, maybe even sooner! I got quoted R800pm for a BMW G310GS!

Anyway, just thought I would put this in writing as motivation for myself

Nice, I'm sure you'll get a lot of advice soon, my 2c is that you can pass your learners with 1 day of studying, redid mine a couple months ago, only using some k53 apps, note this was the oldschool written test not the computerized one that i hear is a bit more difficult.

20k is a nice budget, i spent i think it was 13k for full head to toe kit. then another 4k in camera and Sena at a later stage. This was just over 2 years ago. Also add no noise ear plugs to your list. And/or winter gloves/heated grips. Riding in winter it takes me a couple hundred meters for my hands to freeze with summer gloves.

I'm sure many will recommend (even though i haven't been myself) but go do a course, (assuming you've never ridden before) there's plenty of youtube video's explaining beginner mistakes and such(like counter steering), don't know how tall you are but the NC isn't tiny and can easily be dropped on slow speed turning if you're not used to the dynamic of bikes.

Lastly don't wait too long before going for your license, i waited then forgot and only realized a week after my learners expired, hence the aforementioned redoing of my learners.

I hope all goes well, and you experience the Joy of riding soon.

Trying to book a learners on the NATIS site, but non of the Pretoria locations are available! I will need to go to Kempton park. This is a computerized test.

The budget is that high so that I don't need to compromise, but I will take any savings to the second round of purchases. The wife's peace of mind is at stake.
When I did the beginners course, taking off my glasses to put the helmet on was a bother. I am looking at getting a modular helmet if this will help me keep my glasses on.
Heated grips will be high on the list, but I will start with winter gloves. For bluetooth im looking at the Sena 10c pro, had a built in camera!

Already did some training, watching youtube videos and so on. Will do an intermediate course after I have the bike. During my training the bike was too small for me, felt cramped, im 178cm tall. I think I will go past a honda dealtership to see if I am tall enough to ride :P

Yeah, I think the high insurance will motivate me to do it sooner rather than later.

Nice. The 310 is nice for a first bike. Comfortable at highway speeds, whilst still light and nimble.

I got a new G310R off the floor late last year for R55k. I told them to wait until January to register it in 2019. They said that they were selling closer to cost just to meet sales quotas for the year.

If it lines up that you're looking towards the end of the year, there are definitely deals out there.

Can’t go wrong with the NC as a commuter or starter bike mate.

Nothing wrong with the automatic either.

Only concern I would have is if you are a bit of a shorty and only starting out they can be a bit tall and therefore intimidating.

I’d rate if you are 1.8m or taller you’d be just fine.

Also don’t be in a rush to buy. Put that money you would have paid on insurance away into your bike fund so long and build it up a little more while getting used to it and buy the bike you are really happy with.

Insurance premium doesn’t change with the license usually. Rather it’s the excess that changes instantly. Then when you’ve had your license for a length of time the premium comes down. I recall more than 2 years.

im 1.76 and i flat foot with regular shoes on my nc both feet.

Yes, but you aren’t a new rider.

Also I’m 1.78 and can’t flat foot an NC (700) because my inseam is shorter than average.

I’m however a seasoned rider so can ride many things even with one bum cheek off the seat at a stop, but a new rider would be severely put off by that.

It’s just something I mention to people before they set their heart on something and then run into a problem when their dream comes to reality.
 
So how many times per day are you almost taken out by idiots over taking at well over the speed limit in the yellow lane, and on the left slow lane yellow lane I mean. Irritates the living day lights out of me that people are such morons.
