Unrefined (Zero rear suspension travel, and I had non-adjustables on the rear). Became jarring after 50km of freeway riding, vibrations - everything vibrates.

Developed a nasty oil leak on the rear cylinder which threw oil onto my leg.
There is a reason they call them a hog , they ride like a pig , well my one does :p but i dont go to far with it .other.jpg
 
Well, this may not be the most modern bike in the world, but it's a different beast in comparison to my CBR250R, was a damn scary ride home, I'm not going to lie, but I'm getting the hang of it. Anyone looking for a slightly banged up but serviceable Honda, let me know...

Congratulations, you should be somewhat comfortable in a week. I swapped my my cbx 250 for my friends 2019 ninja 650 for a week. The first ride home freaked me out, I just gave it back today I wonder how my 250 is going to feel when I leave work today
 
So, thoughts.

As is the nature of these deals, the "wee starting problem for the first start of the day" is slightly more offensive than the picture that had been painted (and why I got a large discount on the asking price), and every other time I'd seen the bike start (several), it was perfect every time. So, I will either live with it, once I get a sense of the scope of the issue, or fix it if it's worth doing so. Not sure as yet, taking it to a mechanic on Monday. That being said, I've no issue with the seller on this front as they were upfront about the general nature of the problem and my own lack of experience here is also a factor, which I am happy to accept. In any event, will know more on Monday.

As for the ride itself - uncomfortable, with a caveat - I'm coming from a tiny bike, so my legs are being put in positions they are not used to at all (feels like I'm a lady of the night who specialises in cowgirling sumo wrestlers). This will, of course, pass. It feels like a tank, turns like a tank and somehow vibrates in a way that makes me wonder if something is about to fall off, or if it's just the nature of the beast. That being said, it also gives the impression of having more than enough power to dismiss this weight when necessary. It's so heavy I cannot stop it from rolling down the hill at work, due to the slope at the access-control point (don't know htf I'm going to deal with that one...), and I've already crashed into the barrier with my previous bike, not something I wish to repeat. :laugh:

I've only thus far driven from pickup to home, and to work, so limited feelings so far - I will take it somewhere scenic over the weekend if the weather is good.

Condition is good (as far as I can see) for a 17-or-so-year-old bike, but now that I've spent some time with it, the age tells, as is expected, although in many respects it's doing better than my 2012 CBR. The heated grips don't appear to work. I need to remove the two crap stickers on the tank and frame.

Tell you what - I feel very differently about my CBR now; it's perfect (comparatively) for the short run to work. I don't think this bike is suited for this role, and honestly, I would keep both if it made financial sense. My hope is that this beast can fill the gap for a year or so, and I'd like to ultimately upgrade to a more modern bike that can both get me up the road while managing some longer distances.

Ultimately I am glad I did it, there will be some lessons learnt, no doubt, but that's okay; this is what life is for.

The top-box is amazing, absolutely. Not having to take my helmet into the shop was a ****ing revelation, let me tell you. That said, it's a bit worn, and I'm not sure I entirely trust the locking mechanism. It's also got two panniers, which are in great condition, I just took them off in an effort to find space to park the damn thing.

I've figured out the access control thing: there's presumably a foot brake... I just never use it on the Honda as it weighs like 4 kgs...

Straight up, for the avoidance of any doubt, while it's not been abused, neither have I been the most responsible bike owner in the world (1/3 ignorance, 1/3 bad luck and 1/3 laziness). Just want to be clear on that. I'm going to be better with the next ones...

There was nothing to follow, as this is the first time I'm mentioning it. :cool:

Basically, there is an issue whereby the bike has trouble starting for the first time in the day. I had lots of trouble this morning, and this late evening it started perfectly. I suspect I need to understand the issue better, hence mechanic on Monday. I honestly don't know much about cars and bikes, etc, so will update with technical information once I have it. But practically, trouble starting in the morning, fine for the remainder of the day.

when you say trouble starting, would you say it is sounds like it is turning over but just wont take, or would you say it seems like it isnt turning over properly?

do you hold it and after a bit it fires, or do you have to constantly flip the key back and forth several times?

lastly, when you say it starts late this evening perfectly, how long before that had you ridden it and had it been standing in a cool place or possibly in the sun etc?

It does two things (and I say this based on only one experience with the bike this morning, so pinch of salt) most of the time it takes, and then fizzles out, occasionally not taking, but the starter motor (I'm assuming) making a noise. Turns out, the trick was to A) put the bike in gear and move it a bit, and B) provide some throttle as it was taking (which I'd been warned against due to the risk of flooding the engine).

This was at eight thirty or so this morning - After 11 hours in a cool underground garage it started first thing, no issues this evening.
 
Could jut be a bad battery as well. As to the heated grips, for my F800 BMW wanted R3k per side, so it's quite an expensive fix. With regards to not rolling into the gate, stick in neutral whilst swiping the cards etc, and keep your foot on the back brake. Or, if that feel sketchy to you, leave it in first and switch it off - let the engine keep it there for you. Or change your angle of attack when rolling up on the entrance - take a less severe approach to lessen the effective gradient.

Then, practice turning. It will make you more confident in all aspects of the bike. Find somewhere with grass though, as you will drop it when you start actively practicing turns. The smaller bikes are a lot more forgiving to bad riding habits - so go look at what you need to be doing -> look where you want to go, drag the rear brake a little for slow speed maneuvers, up the engine revs when doing slow speed stuff - the engine provides gyroscopic assistance, then focus on using your clutch to control your speed.

Go check out motojitsu channel on youtube. And go practice. I repeat, you WILL drop the bike, but rather do that whilst you're practicing vs trying it in traffic, and you can pick where you drop it then - grass vs tar.
 
Also, what is the state of your brake fluid? Get that checked. Brake fluid and brake lines. Get that sorted and practice emergency braking - helps you get to know how your new bike responds. Get used to the ABS pulsing now, rather than in a real emergency.

When you it is taking, do you mean it's cranking with the motor struggling to fire up, or do you mean the starter motor is spinning but struggling to engage with the ring gear- so the starter motor is turning over but the engine itself is not?

The former might very well be valves that need replacing. I had that issue on my first GSX-R750, 92 carb model. Valves were worn and wouldn't seal properly when the enigne was cold.

The latter might be the teeth on the the starter motor gear that's worn out.
 
My pinlock insert is stuffed... (I guess, don't clean it with windolene....)

Any ideas where to get a new one sandton/randburg?
Ideally I'd actually like the auto-dimming one...

I quite like the guys, and if they have stock that's fantastic. Just hope you don't have to order anything, they just never phone you back.

Bikerswarehouse are sheisters - they'll say whatever they have to, to get the sale.

Randburg motorcycles is nice, if you don't need it urgently.

I quite like Linex and Motomate though. It also seems like they at least stock something different whereas the rest all stock the same stuff.

This is for buying stuff only. Technical stuff happens privately.

I've figured out the access control thing: there's presumably a foot brake... I just never use it on the Honda as it weighs like 4 kgs...

There’s a front brake too...
