Umm... That's why we ride dual purpose bikes...

Erm...he has a GS.

Suzuki has the Burgman Street (scooter), Sym has the NHT (dual sport GS looking bike), Yamaha the XTZ125 or YBR125, Honda the XR125.

I love these small bikes for commuting in town. Longer trips though (or if you have a stretch of road where cars don't give a crap about the speed limit) then it's not ideal.

But a runaround + your baby is a win/win.

Can vouch for the YBR125, those things are bullet proof and cheap as chips to fix.

Honestly, if I was going to do this, I'd keep the CBR250R - Which in terms of my work commute, the fuel costs are probably under R200 a month.

That being said, I honestly don't want to deal with two bikes, double insurance, etc, etc. I want that unicorn, that's going to serve both purposes.

I'm late to the party, but a few years ago I was doing 40-50km from Fourways to Constantia Kloof and back on a Grom/MSX125, obviously without highways. Didn't do it everyday but quite a couple of times a week. Was a blast but the back roads allowed for that :D

Looking at maybe getting a XR125 myself (or maybe an RV125 if I can live with the small fuel tank). Maybe an XTZ but the honda is a good 1.5 cm lower in seat and I'm not the tallest guy out there.

It's either this or an automatic car and I'm so not looking forward to trading in my Swift for something more expensive and heavier on fuel :p

Talking about said road, its the R554 from Alberton to Boksburg so its straight 2 lanes 100kmh all the way, however in the morning everyone is going 120 - 140 everywhere which I didn't mind until I noticed a biker on a gs650 dakar in the left lane going at a constant 90, after the stop everyone overtakes him but at every next stop he arrives just as tjhe lights go green, every one, serving a point that going 140 you Will catch every set of lights red so I tried it the next day, have to go a bit slower but if you do, green lights all the way.

I'm just thinking that in the car going 90 in the left is sketchy because of the guys in the right going 140 and overtaking in my lane, plus the trucks and overloaded old Isuzu KB250's going 55 forcing you to go into the right lane where you'll have to accelerator quickly so maybe not the road for a little 125.

Still Really want one though.

EDIT: Don't get an auto, it will suck every last bit of life from you.

If only there was a breed of bikes that was a mix between dirt bikes and road bikes. Something that had a dual purpose.

Looking at the tank size, and approximate fuel consumption figures for the bike, I could get about ~320km per tank (although that's a bit optimistic). Until recently, my commute was 16km in total per day, which happens to work out to exactly 320km per working month. Even if we peg fuel at R16 a litre, this is a total of just over R200 per month in fuel to get to work and back.

The K1200RS, on the other hand, is probably about the same as your car. :laugh:
 
Lol. Look at all the bikers not factoring traffic into Corsa commute costs ... I'm so glad that traffic is no longer a consideration for me either.

Man. I'm getting about 260km odd on a tank. Costing around R210 to fill up. Granted, that runs me 2 weeks, but still, makes me sad.

You make it sound like people with bikes have never owned or driven cars.

Having owned a Corsa myself (as well as many other cars) traffic is exactly what I factored into it having tracked the fuel usage on all of them and having real-world statistics for it.

Even my GTI did R1,305 per kilometre. (Granted over it's lifetime petrol fluctuated a whole lot but did hit the same peak we are in now)

R2,60 (presumably his commute goes two ways) per kilometre for a Corsa is bloody outrageous.

So either he horribly misquoted or something is very very wrong.

Regardless using a total cost for X distance as a measure is silly. Litres per kilometre or gtfo.
