Hi, was just on live chat with support twice and lost connectivity, been having problems as of about +- 1 hours ago. Just general connectivity seems to be the issue can't stay on chat for long either....just starts reconnecting

Anyone having performance issues in Cape Town? Getting 110Kb on nntp from various newsservers, 10mb line

I see the issue there. Looks like it was the wrong host. You may need to reload your NZBs to try again from scratch.

What is the new host details? It was not in the email with the new login details. This might be why my nntp is also bad.

CW, I have just spent some time with your support agent. Went through the pathping and MTR tests, none of which indicated any problems on my side. Tried to run the java analysis tool from the berkeley site, however trying to install java indicated that a 30MB download would take over 30min - I sent screenshots to that effect. I am sure we can agree that this is unacceptable on a 20Mbps account, I am simply not willing to go ahead with further test, primarily since you've acknowledged here that you're aware of NNTP and streaming issues and working on a fix, thus looking for problems on my side seems pointless. I do appreciate what you guys are doing, but, once again, I refuse to be a beta tester at a premium price.

Two other accounts (webafrica uncapped and Vox capped) are running at line speed.

Please contact me to discuss the way forward, either PM here or my email.

Thanks.

What news/nntp clients do people use these days? Last I used nntp, Forte Agent was still the client of choice :)

Alt.binz and Sabnzbd are the 2 favourite these days. GrabIt has all the functionality I need

99 bottles of beer on the wall.

99 bottles of beer.....

Torrents flying 75% faster than nntp.
:erm:

If one should break...98 bottles of beer on the wall....

I also seem to be having a lot of difficulty with YouTube presently in addition to the single threaded download problems already discussed. I used to be able to stream 1080p perfectly, unfortunately at the moment, I'm struggling to stream 720p with any consistency, and it takes multiple refreshes on most videos before I can finally find a 'connection' that gets slightly stable with 720p - I have tested this on multiple PCs and my Android tablet; I've also just ordered another router as well (was necessary anyway) and should be able to test with that shortly. Like others have pointed out, whether it is related or not, on the backup ISP accounts I have with WA and AH, 1080p streams flawlessly. Again, I don't understand all the complexities behind what does what in the world of ADSL and internet infrastructure, and how a certain ISP with a certain routing performs differently; this is just my experience as the lay consumer.

Just thought I'd mention this if it helps any other CW subscribers here, and CW if you would like me to run any tests and send your particular information or graphs, please let me know and I will do so.

Many thanks.

No news = good news? Hopefully Shaun and Paul had a good night's sleep :)

So any new web features for us on the new Crystalweb account? I recall a email being sent out which said once we on the new accounts we will get some new website features etc. Has this been implemented yet?

Sleep?! What is this sleep you speak of?

I am pleased to announce that at midnight tonight the customer portal will go live to a few dozen lucky, random customers. If all tests during this time pass then version 0.1 of the portal will be released tomorrow to all customers.

Back on CW after 2 month break. 4mb line watching Netflix last night without a hitch. EL, Eastern Cape

.

Second day in a row now.

There is a known issue with nntp at the moment, but a fix rolled in last night which should be helping - not 100% resolved just yet. This is currently running on our 10Mbps test line with a premium home uncapped account that 90% of customers including you are on right now:

This is on our news server, with 13 connections, on port 563 SSL.

Somewhat of a disclaimer: I'm not a customer of CW yet but I'm seriously considering moving to them. I like their thinking about capping/shaping etc., as I, probably like many others, want an account that always feels fast for browsing and streaming, yet also want to be able to download lots of data but am less concerned if that isn't always running at line speed. As I understand it, CW gives an allocation (say 100GB) at the beginning of each month and the account is unshaped until that is reached, then you switch over to tier 2 where you are shaped, EXCEPT at night where it is unshaped again. Now I like this but I can see it causing some problems, which, given slightly more complicated nature of your policies might be rather subtle. For one, the incentive this creates works in two directions - at the beginning of each month, i could a) try to manage my downloads (and browsing/streaming!) so they mostly run towards the end of the month when I've breached the free data threshold anyway (thereby remaining unshaped for as large as possible a part of the month) or b) supposing i want to maximise the amount of data downloaded, just start downloading from day one, knowing that being shaped isn't so bad after all and I can still download freely at night. Whichever strategy i follow, there is NEVER any incentive for me to manage my downloads up front to take place during off-peak hours. Surely creating such an incentive would make business sense for an ISP? Now I bet there are some customers who would respond positively towards an account where they can help themselves as well as the ISP by managing their less important downloads to run at night. How could they be helping themselves? By not having downloads running at night count towards their free data usage. How about it, CW? (Given that this translates into less usage of the free data allocation, a fair quid pro quo might be to adjust the free data threshold lower, perhaps even as low as 50% of the current threshold, for example.)

Here are two other suggestions: 1) Instead of having a "hard landing" once your free data allocation is reached, start increasing shaping gradually and 2) Instead of having a monthly free data allocation, have a rolling allocation over a shorter period, e.g. 5 days. As a prospective customer, one thing putting me off is this idea of not being able to run downloads at all during the day once i'm shaped, potentially for weeks at a time as I wait for the next month's free data allocation. For myself, I'm happy if 95% of my "heavy downloads" run at night, but occasionally I want a 200-300 MB file to download during the day, and it would be okay if it runs at less than line speed as well, but having to wait until midnight would not be okay. (A bonus third suggestion: some kind of "turbo button" on your web interface with a small (say 5 GB) allocation each month that I can use exactly for this scenario.)

So running at approximately 80% of line speed.

Technically, what would cause NNTP over SSL to run so slowly - surely not packet level shaping ?

Trying to update Elder Scrolls online - 13gb patch. Was running fine earlier today @ 1mb/s so I left it running. Got back now and noticed it's running at 60kb/s.

I am getting full speed when doing a speed test though.

Had the same issue with the update. Ran full speed when switching to a backup account. Ran at 60kb/s on cw but 2mb on the mweb account. This is on a 20mbps line.

Hi guys. Download speeds are decent but Im getting fairly crappy pings in WOW (400+). Anyone else seeing this?

Will contact support later

Actually it spikes to around 900KB/s which is normal for ADSL overhead on a 10Mbps line, especially on international connections.

Hi,

So far very happy and things running good, just want to get some opinions:

  • Recommended router to use, is there "Better" ones?
  • CW, you mention using "our DNS", could Unotelly DNS cause issues?
  • Default router settings fine or is there some tweaks that can help?

I'm no networking guru so just want to make sure I'm getting the best out of my 4MB connection,

Thanks!
Dion

Hi Guys, above might have gotten lost,

Allso see screenshot of network test, does all look well? - http://n1.netalyzr.icsi.berkeley.edu/summary/id=43ca253f-9833-e40d73ab-5b9d-4404-828a
