That I agree with. But does it need to max out your line though? I mean Afrihost and Mweb NNTP was SLOW.

Yes, it needs to run at line speed...it is supposed to be 100% unshaped data(I took the capped account for exactly this). If any protocols are shaped on an unshaped account then it is not unshaped at all and hence not what we paid for. Not bashing CW as they have been open that they are having problems. If it keeps running this way though then it will be a problem.

You guys do realise you've signed up for an ISP, not a news server?
The past few pages have just been people complaining about the news server.

Yeh..and the ISP hasn't been performing on the 3rd party news server I pay for? So I must just be happy with that? Its not what I paid for.

No I just mean that if you compare it with other ISP's NNTP accounts that CW NNTP is not that bad at all, even at half line speed. It is a R100 plus saving per month considering you don't have to pay someone else for your NNTP needs.

Fantastic, came to the thread to see if this was updated because I was informed this morning before work that downloads were failing.

I do agree with the sentiment of the thread - it wastes "unshaped" allocation when downloads fail due to the 3rd party provider. Then people have to resort to torrents, so doubling up and losing out.

After rebooting, I can see the NNTP spike to 1.5MB/s, then fall rapidly and stay at around 500kB/s - making me think this is a shaping experiment gone wrong (or right, I guess, depending if you're on the CW or customer side of the line).

Started a chat with support, they asked me to send them some test results, I did that and they are nowhere to be seen anymore.

LOL.

Obviously there are several guys that are having issues, especially with nntp, but mine ran at 400kB/s average during the 0:00 - 07:00 period on a 4Mbps line.

Streaming ss rugby at high quality atm.

Give them a chance.
I'm very unhappy about something else, but in general the account is very good and Sean, Paul and and the guys behind the scene are really working hard to put forward a great product.

P. S I think support work till 16:00 or 17:00 on weekends.

Also just experienced a NNTP failure. Several gigs wasted. Oh, well, back to torrents.

If this is happening then it's not right, and may be because your account is routing through the temp fix network we put together for customers earlier in the week when we had some issues. It's quite an easy fix with our network team but can only be resolved on Monday, otherwise if you contact us tomorrow at around midday, I will be able to confirm if this is the issue and be able to fix it for you, even if just temporarily.

We all do need some time off, so support works 24hrs from 8am Monday to 8pm Friday night. Then 10am to 5pm weekends.

Paul and I try to do our best outside of these hours in addition which others will confirm. As it is I'm having a rare moment out of the office but still monitoring support and this thread. We will always try to go over and above to offer the best possible support and network. Support we have nailed. Network is still vastly better than most other ISPs right now and in the previous months for most protocols, and we have also taken on board feedback and proactively picked up a couple issues, and are putting in two massive upgrades this month to resolve them as well. And I mean upgrades with tangible increases in value, rather than just fixing problems. And without the 6 month waiting periods you get elsewhere.

:)

Where do we find our monthly usage on the capped accounts?
See the emails for usage haven't been coming through for a couple of days.

It sounds like you're starting to buy into your own press a little too much. I don't know about your network, but your account, for me, is by far the worst performing I have experienced - and in the past two months I have used TI, WA, OW, VOX and yourselves on my 20Mbps line. Your account is by far the slowest in NNTP, slowest in HTTP downloads, and mediocre in streaming performance.

I've only been using your account for 8 days, and all I have heard is that you know about problems, and are rolling out fixes - which I see no evidence of whatsoever. I hear about Telkom problems, while none of my other accounts are experiencing these. And the most peculiar of all - when I explicitly asked your support about this (problems, current status, long term outlook), there was no indication whatsoever of any of this - I was made to believe that everything is just stellar.

The hat-in-hand, wide eyes look act is getting long in the tooth. I asked before, and my question is ignored - will you give me a pro-rata refund in lieu of the fact that your performance is just not as advertised, and you're not providing the service I am paying for?

Please answer my question.

How should the news servers really perform? I was able to get average 245KB\s down at around 3pm this afternoon using one of the free nntp servers available.

When downloading from the news servers yesterday it was anything between 50KB\s and 160KB\s - all over the show - this include AstrWeb, CW and xennanews. It is as if nntp through put is being throttled/shaped.
