What is the issue? What are the upgrades which will be completed on Saturday?

A link on Telkom's ethernet network is congested and a new link needs to be installed to release the congestion.

Point is there seems to be a serious issue effecting multiple ISP's!!!

Correct. It is not unique to us.

We do however have the new link going in this week, which should be quicker than any other ISP.

What's happening with the news server, all my downloads have "not enough repair blocks"

I would suggest using torrents for now. NextGenNews, who provides the news server for the CW accounts, are having issues since the 30th of October.

Their last update showed as critical, and I don't believe it to be fully resolved as of yet. Even though it shows as no outages right now, I once again had a file fail on me over last night again. It is about the 4th or 5th time I have tried to download it (a different upload each time) and yet it still fails. I try to maintain a self imposed limit per day on my uncapped, but failed downloads just contribute towards my time and "limit" being wasted.

In other words, your only problem is on Telkom's infrastructure?

In the email I received, you stated that it's a metro link FAILURE, not congestion that's at the root at the problems.

Which one is it?

Also, your ETA is then based purely on the Telkom schedule (which you have no input to, or control over)?

Please clarify.

I downloaded a torrent an hour ago.

I normally do this during 00:00 - 07:00, but something went wrong with the nzb.

It came down at full line speed on a 4Mbps line, so I doubt capacity is the issue, although I also wondered about capacity issues due to my SS streaming throttled to a constant 800kbps. The packet loss I experience, might be due to contention, which in turn might point to a lack of bandwidth.

The SS streaming might be limited by them(SS) though.

I dunno about it being HTTP only. My YouTube and Netflix streaming was very, VERY poor last night.

Youtube on my end buffered a bit, Netflix was ok. Did not really try other streaming sites. However Vodlocker is a really good place to stream from, but that lately fails a bit on CW with gorillavid.

NNTP downloads failed update:

Massive spike in DMCA takedown notices issued. Number of DMCA takedown instructions have just about doubled in the last 2 weeks, and have hit nntp services quite hard.

This is as a result of Google's new algorithms that demote sites in search results based on the number of DMCA takedown requests issued against them. As a result, DMCA takedown requests have increased massively, resulting in failed downloads as content is legally removed from servers.

Eish, time to wheel out the old torrent client, as much as I hate doing that.

Time to take away CrystalNntp and add a CrystalSeedbox for the top 20 torrents or something. :)

+100 if this even legal....

I been back on torrents lately, partly me stress testing torrents during all hours and partly becoz it's so much easier.
Now with the DCMA take downs Torrents seem like the next best thing - no wasted Tier 1 on missing articles :)

I suspect this is not going to be a permanent state of DMCA. Hold tight - should normalise on their side soon again.

This is affecting all major NNTP providers around the world at the moment.

What do people hate about torrenting anyway? NNTP you have to deal with par files, repair blocks and issues like the above. Torrents? DHCP and the content is there. Hash-checking built in and nothing ever needs a repair.

And well, speeds are very ISP shaping dependant, but NNTP gets shaped nowadays as well. What's the point over torrenting? Being anon? No foreign DMCA claims are valid against *us* here, so there is little more than a threat letter.

Of course seeing how many people fancy it, I'm sure I'll be proven wrong in at least a few of those aspects. For now though? I suggest using TIXATI. The only torrent client I've found dedicated to torrents, with none of the bloat or adware which sadly infested uTorrent over the years.

I guess the fact that someone was arrested and indicted for torrenting in Cape Town recently turned people off a bit. Even though I believe that was for actually uploading a torrent.

Yeah a seedbox is not legal, don't know why I suggested that TBH.

It's safe to assume that person hadn't heard of Peerblock...

Thanks for the tip, I was getting tired of all the ads in uTorrent.
