Requires a complete redevelopment as backbone changed. We're busy with that now.

Thanks for the info.

By the way Shaun, when should I be expecting the new login details?
There's no rush as i have till the end of the month, but just curious.

I popped them through last week for you. I updated the ticket for the chat we had, so check your mailbox. But let me PM them to you quickly.

Hmmmm.... I did warn you about the handful of users that could hurt you. Some of them belong to download clubs who then sell the DL'd data on a weekly basis. Most of them consume 1TB+ per month and seldom watch or use anything that they download.

Download clubs are a thing?:wtf:

indeed, what you didn't warn us is that they were all Cape based ...
and some seemingly odd abilities of some customers to avoid bottlenecks in the network infrastructure

What I just don't understand is the market to sell on downloaded data in the current market

Also surely this is highly illegal.

it certainly is a breach of contract etc ...

and some of the measures adopted by some customers to evade network management are in serious violation of the AUP
it is however a case by case investigation before the "A" word is used

Can anybody help with start up capital for a new business venture in the greater Cape area?:D

Which to date has only been used once, and that was this month, by someone from a downloader's club we are quite sure. And there were multiple, very serious breaches of the AUP here too.

wanting to start a "security services" business that protects networks and breaks legs?

sorry we can't support

I can understand why "download clubs" where a thing when we were all on ISDN or dial-up.
But really, in this current day and age. Seems pretty stupid and obsolete.

No, I was more thinking in the line of a resort to keep them busy so the network can clear up for the rest of us.;)

well this is the economics that I don't get: of you are going to be pooling a ton of downloads surely getting a fibre connection somewhere just makes more sense; the whole value of ADSL technology is a hack (in the original sense) that allowed homes (and businesses with limited telecoms requirements) always-on connectivity as consumers to the Internet so if you want to have a shared sneakernet type download club a DSL connection really isn't the way to do it

o and a resort is a lot nicer than keeping the busy by playing drums

Whatever fixes you guys did this morning, they aren't working for me. 241Kb/s on Youtube is just not fun.

Bits or Bytes?

We're still pushing some updates over the coming days, but looking at your throughput it seems your account is only really used in peak and the last hour is pushing on average 1.3Mbps - is this all streaming? Remember this is average so looking at peaks and troughs, really. So if streaming, that makes sense in terms of average throughput on a 4Mbps account as it will only pull what it needs to when it needs to.

Also, is it not possible to talk to me on live chat rather?

I'm actually heading out now, so Live Chat won't be an option for the next three hours or so. The streaming action taking place in the last hour is Netflix on the Low setting, which is the only thing that works flawlessly all of the time. I'm the only one doing anything on the network now and that is in bits per second. Meanwhile the capped test account still works perfectly.

I was just updating a driver for my Firefox and getting 39Kb/sec

*******??

Just out of interest, what sort of download performance in peak on a dynamically shaped home 2Mbps service would you be comfortable with?

Personally full speed for 1 minute and half it every minute after until it's 1/8 for a /home/ account

If I may ask, just out of curiosity because I can't see the rate at which the downloads come down, but does the download shaper apply to downloads from Xbox Live?

Not sure what protocols and ports Live uses.

Which would be nice for <25MB downloads. But anything above 25MB and you actually end up having worse performance than what ZinSA posted. Twice as worse, in fact. It would cost us less, but instead we target 20% to 25% of line speed in peak periods for downloads which gives an overall better experience for various size downloads rather. And as previously posted, once we have a handle on the "backup the internet once a day" downloaders in CPT this will start to resolve itself as well.

The problem that we have is one of expectation vs reality, and its partly our fault. For many months we did not shape accounts, and it's become the expectation in peak that this is how the account should perform even after moving to IS and sending notices about the introduction of dynamic shaping. In particular, this is frustrating a handful of home users who use the account to download their files in peak hours. And I understand that, but the economics in play don't allow for unshaped uncapped at the prices of our home uncapped accounts. Most home users accept this, but some get rather angry with us about it, but the reality is that there are better suited accounts for this sort of usage pattern.
