OnePlus is collecting user data without permission, and that’s not okay

OnePlus will start prompting users to opt out of data collection

As it has a tendency to do every now and then, OnePlus found itself in hot water earlier this week when users were reminded as to just how much personal data OnePlus smartphones were collecting and sending back to the company. Essentially, the operating system on OnePlus devices (OxygenOS) has a "user experience program" that users are automatically entered into.

Thankfully, by the end of October, OnePlus will be adding a new prompt when setting up an OxygenOS device for the first time that will give customers the option of opting in or out of the program right out of the box.

Although this is something that should have been made available in the first place, it is a step in the right direction. Pei doesn't outline why OnePlus was collecting MAC addresses, Wi-Fi networks, and other info to begin with, but I wouldn't hold your breath for a proper explanation on that anytime soon.

LOL! OnePlus pretty much pulled a Google there.

As they say "It's Better to Beg for Forgiveness than to Ask for Permission"

I am pretty sure the information they gathered from OnePluse One up to 5 recently has given them plenty of information that they required, and even going forward, how many will opt out?

Brilliant move for them on their side. Monitoring consumer behaviour is something every company would love to be doing, and maybe our Apples and Samsungs are doing it in a slicker fashion.

I charged it to 100% had my 2nd sim activated for about a hour. Auto brightness, but i did setup the screen time to 30 min, so basically when i turned it off myself. and power saving from 15%.

Thats an insane battery life!! My 3T barely makes it to 6 hours SOT! Although I am using dual-sim always so I am not sure how that would affect the battery life

Not everyone is on FNB and wants a contract from FNB.

They should have approached Massmart stores, who welcome new product's with open arms, better availability

You can buy it cash from them.

Interesting. (I realize it's the 5T...but it still has "5" in it! :p )

(I was going to post it in one of the iphone x threads, but I wasn't sure how the ifolk would've handled it -and I probably would've been accused of apple-hate and being a fandroid. I genuinely found it interesting...and this has me questioning that R20k+ price tag all over again. [Not that I was planning on getting a iphone x...but is it really worth R20k+?])

5T is an awesome piece of kit for sure! Love my 5 but now wish I had waited.

Anyway, 20k for a phone is ridiculous regardless of who's logo sits on the back of it. Having said that don't expect to get a 5T locally for less than 13k! I paid under R8k for my 5 back in August...

For sure!
Still, R13k is a lot more palatable than R20k+ :)

If you looking for one let me know, friend is bringing in a couple and he's asking me 8500 for the 64gig one. Will just confirm time but should be in the next 2 weeks.

Thanks, very decent price!! He'll sell those easy peazy. I'm very tempted but think I'm going to hold out for the 6...

FTFY
(Let's not play this "I should've waited for the xT" game again!)
:D :p

True. :o That means I'll need to wait a year for my next upgrade?? Mmmmmmm, Doable... History has proven the longer one holds out, the greater the rewards...

Actually I think that would make a interesting thread. What's the longest you've held onto your phone before updating and what did you upgrade to?

If I brought in an extra 5T White Edition (128GB\8GB Star Wars Limited Edition) I wander what it would go for locally?
Anyone interested in it?

Yeah, I'm hoping to pick one up later this week. R9.5k off of a seller over on Carbs... I'm not really in the market for a new phone but @R9500 for the Star Wars edition, I'm quite keen. I wouldn't pay a cent more though..

anyone else having problems with the google play music app on the Oneplus 5 ?

It used to work fine but since the last firmware update (i assume this is the cause) the app doesnt work properly.
The music plays but there's no sound coming through on my headphones, tried vlc on the phone and it works.

Edit: i'm not streaming music, just playing songs i have stored on the phone itself.
