OpenWeb ADSL Feedback Thread

Mmmm yeah Koosi...dunno what to say I am a recently divorced Mweb client, was looking for an account with fast browsing during the day and some good after hours performance on other protocols. Not getting it at the moment. Everything was fine in Nov and Dec.
Openweb can we please hear a reason? I hate changing ISP's every 3 months.

Kindly PM me with your ADSL username so that I can take a look

Extremely slow browsing again today - started last week mostly day times. On Gold Orange 4Mbps at R649 - expect the browsing to be good for that price. Don't care about other services during the day but at least http traffic must work. Currently unusable.

Please do keep us updated.

Last weekend was not great :( I kept getting disconnected randomly and the only way I know how to get this issue fixed TEMPORARILY by restarting my brand new router that I bought last week (Thought it would fix the 1-month old issue PERMANENTLY >_<).

Today I requested my line to downgrade back to 2Mbps and that was done. All of a sudden my SNR margin looks very healthy (>20Db). Hope the issue is fixed for good. I will see tonight if it's really gone. My liver tells me that my Openweb account's dodgy.

This is what I found...
They're shaping aggressively.

I run M2M protocols... In one of the systems I developed, we use UDP packets to send small chunks of data... Guess what... those are flying through like a bat out of hell.

Last week I saw how suddenly at the stroke of 5PM the internet changed and all the throttling went away. I am willing to bet good money that by 5:00pm today this will suddenly vanish and things will work again.
This is not the kind of internet I expect, nor willing to pay for. I can understand that protocol i.e. torrent etc... is restricted during working hours, but this is NOT ON! This is bull****. I am effectively as good as cut off from the internet.

I am waiting for the Afrihost rep to get back to me about getting a trial account, if they work, then its bye bye Openweb. Again, the truism is thus- do not listen to people giving advice on Mybroadband.co.za

Exactly same issue here. 2MB OW Gold. Basically zero connectivity.

Mr. Beep, web browsing speed's been so slow since about half an hour ago :( At least the connection hasn't been dropped at all since I downgraded my line to 2Mbps today.

You see thats been my gripe with any isp. If you shape at least shape to half my line speed not until I am below 56k dial up because then it is not worth it.

Side note OpenWeb if you guys are pushing everyone to get the Gold/Orange/Platinum accounts how are we going to be on a lower contention ratio if those special accounts are full? Finally I have to ask the question that seems to be ignored, If you are paying for a high account like quite a few people are and you are shaped badly on just browsing what is the point of paying that much? To quote the website on Orange:

Why should I choose this package?
With lower contention ratios and an A-Grade network, clients can rest assured that if their Telkom line is up, their ADSL access will be available. Gold offers a lower contention ratio. In simple terms, this basically means that less people share the big internet pipe, thus everything, from Youtube to torrents will be much faster overall. You will just love it! Go for Gold, and unthrottle your ADSL!

And yet you have people on here pretty much saying that they have less than half their paid for line speed. I want to upgrade to Orange but if I am to be shaped to 90% of my line speed during the day how is that different from the Leon account or any other account?

Please understand I am not trolling you or attacking you I am just trying to understand what is going on and what package will give me the best overall experience during the day. So far Gamers King was that account for me because I never experianced shaping until I changed to Gold so maybe, just maybe, Gold(both editions) has been oversold and it no longer is lower contention? I will carry on for awhile and give it a month or two just to see how common this heavy shaping really is and if it is really common then quite possibly leave OpenWeb for another ISP...

To everyone else please specify what OpenWeb package you are on? Gold, Gold/Orange, Platinum and so on just to see where the slowest line is. Mine is Gold Leon and it is pretty slow according to the wife...

MrBeep, regarding the new Titan product and just to confirm.

We all know by now the slogan: the more you pay, the better the service (hopefully), so is it safe to assume that the Titan product is below all Gold range products?

Going by this rule, the list of priorities are Platinum, Gold (Original, Orange, Leon, Love etc.), Gamers, Everyday and then Titan?

Local speed test 0.09KB/s dies after 5 mins
International 0.00 dies after 1 min

Afrihost: Full speed and full speed

I am SO glad I am gone end of jan...

Just fyi for anyone thinking of leaving, openweb also have a full calendar month (aka 2 month) cancellation period so do it as early as possible!

I guess since this is an "upgrade" of sorts I don't have to pay more/wait 2 months or anything like that, correct?

Send mail to [email protected] to request upgrade.
The upgrade is instant and i think you're next invoice will reflect the new price (R249). I think the pro-rata only applies to new customers, not existing.

Titan is the entry level product yes :)

Your priority list is pretty spot on!
