MrBeep. I read a post you sent earlier about people on Special accounts having a HIGHER contention ratio than those on regular accounts. Does this mean that my Gold Special account will have a higher ratio than someone who has a normal Gold account? Or maybe I read it wrong. Please do explain this

This could be. It all depends which promotion you took, when you took it, and how long you have been a client.

At OpenWeb, we also decrease contention ratios based on loyalty. If a client has been with us for a while, they will more than like have a lower contention ratio than a client who stays with us for a month or two and then moves on.

The ultimate aim is to offer the best value, with the best contention for the best price. Loyalty definitely helps!

Hi KoKaRot,

There are no general issues currently. This could be a router, Telkom line or exchange fault.

If an excchange is congested, it will generally slow down between 18:00 and 23:00 daily. If this is what happens, you are more than likely stuck on one of these exchanges.

Our network is currently unshaped, thus this is not a shaping issue.

Latency: 203 ms

That second hop is waaay too low for a congested line. Usually it will be over 150ms.

Could be a line or router fault.

I have tested your account all night (I am actually sending you this mail using it) and it is working perfectly. Right now, downloads are being shaped as it is peak, but this is normal. Browsing and even youtube is running at full speed.

Our network will once again be completely unshaped the entire weekend.

Herewith our schedule:

Platinum will be unshaped from 17:20
Gold will be unshaped from 17:30
Vanilla, Standard and Silver will be unshaped from 18:00
Gamers will be unshaped from 18:20

Normal package shaping will apply on Monday at 08:00am for all service levels.

Queue those downloads and have fun!

Yay weekend!

This has probably been asked before but what exactly is the difference between Vanilla and Standard? Is it simply that Standard will sometimes be unshaped during the day when the network is quiet?

Also, any plans to allow people on promotional packages to upgrade accounts without having to pay for 2 packages for 1-2 months?

I've just signed up for the Standard promotion because at R1 extra it's a no-brainer, but if I have to pay twice each time I want to upgrade I'll be discouraged from doing so in the future.

Standard Uncapped has a lower contention ratio and higher priority on the network than Vanilla uncapped.

This means a better overall performance

Did you try the OpenWeb DNS settings?

DNS is not the problem. Exchange is being hammered.

Looking at the Openweb Gold special, firstly this question is aimed at openweb, if I sign up for the gold uncapped 10Mbps option and find my line can only support 4mbps, can I bump down to 4mbps?

This is for current users. How are daytime and night time speeds for downloads? Do you get full speeds? Especially with regards to usenet downloads, not too worried about slow torrents. What usage are you heavy downloaders getting in a month? I'm on mweb now but scared to go past 400GB.
