OpenWeb ADSL Feedback Thread

You cant blame Openweb? Sure ok, but its called PR and telling us WTF is going on

You can't really blame OW for this though, this is a seacom cable problem and things are a little dodgy for all isps at the moment.
What you gonna do, go to mweb? some users reported that their lines were completely dead.

Swapping around ISPs for a temporary issue is stupid - in a week from now OpenWeb will be flying again and then you're stuck on MWeb/Afrihost.

I'm waiting it out.

The difference is that, other ISPs actually get back to their clients, notify them and keep them in the loop. And yes, they have an actual support call centre.

From reading the above comments it seems that this is not a redundancy/Seacom issue because people have been experiencing this between 8 am and 5 pm daily for the last 40 days (pre Seacom issues).

what? this is news to me.
Only my usenet is slightly slower today... when I combine HTTP downloads in FDM I get full speed again. (mostly)

Maybe just go and read the other "ADSL Feedback" threads before you move though, because the grass isn't green anywhere at the moment.

If I would be slightly slower today, I would be ok with it (Seacom issues and all) but running at 1/20th of the speed is a huge problem for Youtube, HTTP downloads (not even trying P2P). It's a joke.....

I can confirm this 8am to 5pm weekday issue. I am on the gold UNSHAPED and uncapped and I have been having this issue too. This is the third different account they gave me and each time it works well for a couple of days and then the speeds degrade again.

Did you do a port reset though? that usually fixes things for me when I get a super slow speed.
It's difficult to say what your problem could be between all the seacom problems..

I haven't needed to do a port reset in a long time though, but I've done it, reset the modem after 30 minutes, and BAM full speed again.

My Usenet is now back to 100% speeds

anyone else see a sudden speed boost?

Yeah same here, port reset didn't help, its definitely something with the shaping but they don't want to look into that.

My speed seems to be back to almost normal levels. It's clear that they are throttling traffic between 8 am and 5 pm for business users.... So it's not a Seacom issue.

I think you are right, BUT I think they might only be doing this because of the temporary seacom issues.
Usually I have 100% speeds any time and day of the week, and 90% on a bad day... I seriously think this is only temporary.

Also, I think you mean shaping, not throttling.
(Meaning, your Usenet might be slower, but your HHTP/etc is still fast)

OpenWeb haven't ever throttled anyone.

You are right, probably shaping, but the extent of shaping is extreme, especially for a Gold user.... I really hope that I don't have this issue post Seacom repairs.

There will be stronger shaping dynamically applied whilst we run on alternate international routing during peak periods.

When capacity is available, like now, we will release shaping as much as possible. I am sure everyone is having a superb experience currently.

MrBEEP, can you guys justify 10 kb/sec download rate on a Gold 2 MB Uncapped product between 8 am and 5 pm? Is that not a little extreme? I couldn't download today the whole day, couldn't steam video on my leave.... I would understand 70% shaping or something to that effect but not to the rate that was happening. Also, your tech support doesn't take calls? Or respond to clients? My first 2 weeks with OpenWeb and I am disappointed. I am a service manager in a large SA corporate and I really value good service.... Which seems to be lacking in this instance and any proactive communication.

I had to bring some work home cause the bloody Telskommel internet at work is up to *****.

Done a 25MB DL in about 5-10 min, build the 180MB data file of that so now updating the netbook.

Gonna book my 1,5hrs overtime for services rendered, lol.

P.S. My 2MB Gold Uncapped runs normal for SEACOM being down.

Thanks OpenWeb

Jeez, you oukes are not making things easier. I cancelled Afrihost Business 2MB Uncapped to go to Openweb on their 2MB Silver Uncapped, and now everyone here complains of slow speeds. I dunno who to go with anymore !

LOL

:-)

same here :P

i canceled my acc from mweb i had prob with them from last year started +- october/november
it gotten better for a few weeks then bad again
youtube us just a pain and skype is blaw
i canceled my acc a few weeks b4 this cable prob enyways :P

but this slow speed is prob cuz the cable

i hope openweb have a good spesial on 2mbps at the end of april/middle april

like the gamers spesial that they had a few weeks ago :D

Hi Zodiak

Kindly email [email protected] with your ticket number and I will check re: response times.

Most ISP's are in the same boat. Unfortunately it is not about justifying anything at this stage. It is about providing the best service overall, to the most amount of clients during the outage. This means downloads will see increased shaping during peak periods.

As we speak, you can catch up with your downloads.

Of course, all will restore to normal once Seacom is back up.

Hi MrBEEP, thank you for the response, much appreciated. Everything is now running ok in the evening. Therefore, I will take you up on your offer tomorrow if the issue persists. My issue is not the downloading and it is not a priority right now. I do mostly video streaming and that is my problem, can't really catch up on a day lost with that. I am on leave at home this week and would love to stream without issues please.

PS I never even got a ticket number from the emails sent to [email protected] but I was dealing with Athol today who is aware of my issues.

Many thanks.
