Ya, there seems to be a general shaping issue which is affecting all types of accounts with Openweb before 5 pm. It's unusable and if I am paying a premium for a Gold account, this is not acceptable. I would like for them to at least admit that there is a general issue and it's not isolated incidents as it seems to be affecting more and more people in exactly the same way.... I don't see why I have to wait till 5 pm every day to check my Facebook when I am back from work earlier?!

I have to agree with you. I haven't complained about this up until now since I'm not paying that much for my Standard Uncapped Promo account. But I would never think that something like this could happen on a Gold account.
 
5PM and the floodgates open! From 18KB/s to 60KB/s in a matter of seconds. Like clockwork. :(

My graph shows something similar from alt.binz- from 9am to 5pm it's on around 6KB/s. Hitting 5pm it shoots to 100KB/s.

Browsing is similarly crippled over the same time period.

I use another account (Telkom 5GB, part of my 'Simple' Plan) for browsing and working from home. OW account is used solely for downloading.

Unfortunate.

Are you also on OW Standard Uncapped? If yes, are you paying full price or a promotional price?

I'm having a small issue with gaming online with my Xbox 360 and I'm hoping you and your IT geniuses can help. I'm currently on a 2mb/s Gamers King Account. The problem I'm having is that I recently purchased a mic for my console to be able to party chat in-game but it rarely ever works, it works intermittantly. I took the mic to a friends house who's on a 4mb/s with Afrihost and the mic works perfectly. I read somewhere that I need to change my NAT settings on my router but for some reason every time I try to change it, it reverts back to its original. The NAT settings I get on my Xbox is "Moderate". Do any of your guys know how to rectify this situation? My router is a Duoplus 300WR. Does the mic not work because of my net speed? Or do I need to upgrade my modem? Is there any way that you guys can help me out? I know it's off topic but I'd really appreciate any feedback. Thanks in advance. Cheers.

I had similar issues with that router, NAT would go from open to moderate every few hours. I forwarded ports the whole nine but the issue would always come back until I got another router. No everything works as it should so I would strongly suggest getting another router.
 
Ouch guys, I feel your pain. I generally get about 100Kbs minimum during the day and shoots up to around 250kbs late at night. I'm fairly new with OW and have not had a problem yet. Browsing, downloading and gaming is performing without a hitch (TOUCH WOOD). To be honest I haven't gone on any mental downloading sprees yet but I think I'm due one. I hope all your issues get rectified.

Either Standard or Vanilla: Polar Edition 1Mbps @R99 :D

Which is why I'm not too bothered that it's not working during the day. I get what I need after hours and with the Telkom Account, I can do what I need to during the day.

Would be better if the OW account worked during the day though...
 
Perfect browsing speed again at 5 pm sharp, like clockwork. I doubt it's the router because its too many people having the same issue at the same time and it coming back at exactly 5 pm means its scheduled shaping like clockwork.

Well, I would'nt mind if I were paying R99, but Im paying R226 for effectively an after hours account.

And I'm paying over R350 each month so I also mind....

I'm on Standard Uncapped (I have no clue and don't really care Edition) for R109pm. :)

I'm seriously starting to think that promo accounts are discriminated against in terms
of performance and quality of service.

I'm afraid this has been a long and slow road thanks to Telkom, but we are getting there.

When will Openweb start offering data and adsl bundles?
 
During peak shaping times (when the network is very busy) your downloads can severly affect your browsing speeds.

We would suggest you stop downloads during peak (when the network is busy).

In our future CP release, we will show an indicator of how busy it is. Unless of course you are on an unshaped package, then you can download away!

There is absolutely no doubt about the fact that the less you pay, the higher your contention ratio (the more people you share with). We have never denied this, we in fact have discussed this many times before on this very thread and forum.

We offer cheap packages, because there is a massive demand for it, and most folks do not care if their downloads slow down during peak.

We then offer more expensive packages which offer a better all round experience, eg Gold Uncapped Original or Platinum.

We are also currently working on a middle of the range unshaped product which will fill a gap in the market.

A little honesty maybe?

HTTP During Peak Hours:
No Browsing + Downloading = 15KB/s Downloads
Browsing + No Downloading = Slow Browsing
Browsing + Downloading = Fatal Combination
