Can we get feedback around streaming?

Streaming of anything in particular?

YouTube is perfect. I can even stream in 720 now which I couldn't do before. Still has the occasional buffer but I ran a YouTube speed test and all is fine. Streaming from Supersport is also perfect - no hiccups at all yesterday aside from buffering that was due to my line stats dropping because of a storm that hit.

So far I'm super pleased about this. Openweb also send out a daily usage report so I can keep track of where I am. Last night I was at about 6% of total usage but I did an inordinate amount of downloading on the line yesterday and today. Things will return to normal from here on out, and I don't see me hitting that cap any time soon.

All I can say is that if you are using under 100Gb per month, and I am based on the stats my router gave me, then the capped account makes sense...

There seems to be no top-up options though... so if the cap is hit, what then ?

To be fair, I have had no real complaints in over three years... but needs are now requiring large peak-time downloads (drop-box and WeTransfer / YouSenIt files) that will probably result in the automatic shaper doing its thing on this account. I have noticed some more aggressive shaping this month.

Keeping under 3GB a day is doable for the 100GB unshaped, capped account... my only concern is what happens if or when this might be exceeded in that month...

They do offer top-ups for all accounts, but if you're going to need more than just a few gigs then it makes sense to just buy another capped bundle with a new login, and cancel it that month. I'm pretty sure, knowing MrBEEP, that if this were the case and you communicated with them about it, that they'd sort you out with a new bundle on the same account if needs be. This is conjecture, however. I haven't tested it. One day I might need to...

I need capped prices to drop further still. I use just too much to move over. But then again I don't have issues with my uncapped account so no reason to move :D

I'm getting near full line speed most of the time (syncing at 2496kbps), and the only reason I'm not is because of known issues with my exchange. The capped account works a treat. I know it seems backwards in this day and age to opt for capped, but why not if the offer is there and your usage is less than the cap?

Last Result:
Download Speed: 2000 kbps (250 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 428 kbps (53.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 37 ms

I get 2316kbps on international speedtest... this is better than MWEB.. will re-test after 9pm (to rule out exchange congestion)

Local speedtest is a 26% improvement over MWEB... goes full line speed... sometimes close to the synch speed.

I'm afraid I do not understand this post.

You are getting 3.15Mbps on a 2Mbps account? How is this a problem?

Its a problem because its only Speedtest where I get this result. I said I got 1.5 Mbps while browsing.

Just tried browsing right now, and I am getting around 0.6 Mbps.

Shaping looks at the following:

1. Service level
2. Network load
3. Forecasting of load
4. When the network is at critical peak, it will differentiate between those downloading during peak and those that are not. If you are, your browsing will be shaped until about an hour after you stop them.

Why do you guys do this? Is it like some kind of punishment? Seems a bit dick

EDIT: also browsing isn't 'shaped', it should be the highest priority protocol - so in essence this is throttling and not shaping as far as I understand it?

We used to offer unconditional unshaped Browsing. Some folks decided that it is a great idea to download over the Browsing protocol. The abuse was a very very very very very very very costly affair. We feel this is a fair way of mitigating the abuse.

The policy is very fair. It does not immediately shape browsing. Only if it sees your download persisting, will it affect your browsing. AND ONLY DURING PEAK.

Offpeak you can go monkey nuts and no-one will care.

Blame Telkom. If they drop their IPC rate by 50% these silly policies will not be necessary. They are the thorn in everyones side.

So I did another test... I ran steam... it updated fine.
It battled to connect a bit. Not sure why. On the second attempt it went through.

I will check what the other scene is like, will fire up the XBOX tonight.

sportsdevil. im struggling a bit to get a decent stream going myside.

My html speeds is almost dead again today.

How do you know if your exchange is congested? I am staying very close to the Union Buildings, and I assume a lot of bandwidth is being used streaming the activities there.

Swapped to FNB Connect and result much better

Looks like it is openweb

Speedtest shows 3.15Mbps at the moment, on Openweb 2MB Leon Account.

However, when opening 9gag.com and scrolling down as much as possible, i get around 1.5Mbps

When I switch to Telkom account, 3.30Mbps :(

1.5 mbps is 187kb/s

thats normal for a 2mbps acount

and is that telkom capped?

and speedtest are more acurate to show your line speed and not your data acount speed
the data affects it
but it lean more to the line speed

I seem mostly to be having issues with secure sites. I have been downloading so I'm switching to my capped account and will try again at 12. Being disconnected for an hour should reset the shaper.

I don't mind being shaped more aggressively if I'm downloading, but I'm not happy with https being completely crippled in that event. A lot of very day-to-day things use https now.

Do you have any news for me MrBeep? It's been 2 days since we spoke. Can I try another account?
