Oh it works now, if I can call it that, was fine for 20 minutes and now I am throttled to 2 Megs. On a 40meg account. And yest I PAY for a 40 Meg account.

Which account tier? I don't see this on the OW site.

no usage limits, no star system. business hours are heavily shaped though for downloading. if you can live with that then its fine. browsing and other stuff works business hours though.

Thanks mate. What are the stimulated business hours? 6am to 11pm or normal real working 8am - 6pm styles? Can live with limited downloading during the day as long as evening isn't "6 hours long" like the current one. During the day does youtube and other social media sites work? Gmail, general browsing etc?

Oh, also are VPN's allowed?

Many thanks.

I know just what you mean (as I sit here awake because I stayed up to initiate a large download on the PS3)

Yeah it really does feel like we living on another planet!

Just to add to the questions, how is streaming like from livestation during the day handle on OpenWeb? I ask these daily browsing/stream Q's because I'm needing to monitor news and would be nice if that is still allowed to work.

Thanks once again.

From 5 your speed should pickup. But on everyday your floodgates open last I think. But by 11pm it should be full speed. Yep general stuff should work but only when no downloading else everything is shaped. I pause downloading around 9am. Start again at 5. But I don't do big volumes.

Vpn's and live station I'm not familiar with.

Crazy. Could have started that at 5. It will just speed up as shaping eases. I did some psn downloads and was impressed. Could even do other stuff. I paused other protocols though. Then that thing ran hard!

Depending on which package you have, but generally the network becomes more unshaped from 5-6 pm up until 7-8 am the next morning. (Weekends from Friday 5-6 pm up until 7-8 am Monday morning.)

Many thanks snail112 and akescpt, feedback is much valued. The times you have given are like heaven compared to current provider so we'll most likely switch near mid month or end of the month. Many of us have had to wait till midnight to do downloads and updates, even updates that are only a hundred megs or else we are penalized heavily. (oh and we paying double this price)
Thank you.

PM mrbeep, he will give you a trial account, I used a trial for a few days and then signed up, loving it so far :D

So sent an email to support at 9:35 this morning, got a 4hrs later with the same issue at hand. I love OW but the support on weekends is truly pathetic. Time to step up your game guys.

Still sitting with an account with fluctuating/low speeds & line dropping. I don't download during peak hours & it annoys me to no end when I have issues over the weekend. It seems to happen every second weekend.

Does anyone know what is the correlation between ping and download speed?

Not a whole lot. Ping is an indicator of responsiveness from the address being pinged - good ping is an important factor for online gaming. However, line capacity is a much bigger factor for download speed. E.g Just cos your ping is 10 ms and mine is 23ms, doesn't mean u will download faster if ur line is 1mbps and mine is 4mbps.

Thanks for that. So which (high ping or low download speed) is indicative of a Telkom fault as opposed to an ISP fault?

You need to run a trace root to see that. Assuming you on Windows, go to command prompt and type: tracert www.google.com

That will show you the time taken for each hop(node) in the journey from your pc to your isp and then eventually to Google. Have a look through the isp forums and u will see tons of examples of what ppl post. Typically, if the delay is on Telkom side, the first hop, after your router and before the isp will be long - whereas, if the isp has the issue, it will be seen as slow hops after it reaches the isp.

U don't have to use Google - can be any site - can try both local and overseas sites to see if u get different results.

U can also run a speed test to see how your line is performing but that won't tell whether it's a Telkom or isp issue - will just show overall line performance - www.speedtest.net

Then compare the speed test results to the line size you have. E.g if your line is 2mb and your speed test results are 1.6mbps, then it's probably OK - have to cater for some drop in real world speeds.
