There has been a massive spike in network usage since 13:00. It is starting to calm down a bit now, but still not at normal levels.

Please remember, many folks have not used the internet for over a month and they have a huge data backlog. These need to be cleared before things will return to normal levels again

Hence the reason why I said I will wait a month or two. Quite a few factories would have shutdown their servers and so on over the Christmas holidays and would have come up today and started pulling WSUS updates and so on. So I am prepared to wait awhile...
 
I'm assuming they renamed the Silver to the Titan account?

So is SSH allowed on the Titan account?

I'm currently on the 2M uncapped gold with a 4M line. I'm thinking if I should ditch the 2M and go for the Titan...
 
Hi MrBeep,

My 1mbps Hero Uncapped account is performing at 2mbps. Did I receive a free upgrade or something? :)
 
Titan Uncapped

Hi MrBeep, I am looking for an uncapped account to use for:

1. Netflix and Hulu+ streaming (Any time of Day)
2. Download after hours (say 1am to 6am)

Will the Titan package work?

I tested FNBConnect, Axxess, Telkom - they all shape Netflix and Hulu+ streaming.

It will be interesting to to hear when non Gold level accounts loosen up. :)

I've tried all those too and none of them shaped Netflix (at least not that I would notice it). What line speed do you have?

I have a 10Meg line, and when they do not shape, I can run 2 HD streams no problem on my Roku's.

FNB actually throttles everyting if your usage is too high. Thus if I only use FNB for streaming its ok. As soon as my usage increase because of downloading, they throttle everything.

AXXESS confirmed (The Axxess Lady) that Netflix & Hulu is not seen as realtime and will shape. Youtube is seen as realtime. They also said that if you use DNS service like Unotelly, the system sees that you are trying to bypass their shaping system.

Telkom were total f-up, getting half my line speed and less. Totally unstable.

I currently use 2 uncapped accounts:

1. Axxess for general browsing & downloading
2. FNB (because its free) for Netflix and Hulu.

If anyone misbehaves, I switch between them, but its a pain.
 
Hmmm 17:00 and it now is usable again.

The worst shaping I have ever experienced on my OpenWeb account to date.

I hope this is an exception and not the new rule.

I can honestly say I haven't had a days issues with my Openweb account and Netflix, but I don't know about the special accounts.
 
My internet is dead.... Even at 17:00, downloads all sitting at 0.00 kb/sec (restarted router after switching off for 30 minutes), Facebook and other sites not loading correctly and timing out, e-mail is slow, Mybroadband forum (local) took a few refreshes to load.... I understand that the network took a hit today but c'mon, I can't even browse.....

I don't really know what my account is, I got an early release of the 20Mbit accounts before they were officially released. I guess the closest would be the Everyday Uncapped 20Mbit.

And no you can't see when the network is being shaped, I normally just keep tabs on this thread as any general faults are always reported here.
 
Ok, the internet just came alive again at 17:10.... But why is the shaping affecting the browsing? It isn't supposed to do that....

Will report back tomorrow - did not have time to test pre-17:00 and post 06:00. For the type of account I have I expect good http during the day.
 
Here's a question for anyone in the know -better yet, with experience(?):

Which would you take and why?

1. Shaped 4mb account

or

2. Unshaped 2mb account
