*READ FIRST* MTN Network Status & Issues (DNS, Throughput and Latency)

Hi everyone - we are looking into these problems as a matter of urgency. Please can you PM me the MSISDN (cell number) in the modem/handset when you have these performance issues? We have setup a special task team to investigate and report back to me with solutions.

Good, as I was just about to make the call to move from Vodacom to MTN but reading a thread like this makes me think twice about it... a cheaper contract is great, but useless if you can't make calls and retrieve data!

Now I've got the no 3g available at 8:30 in the morning in an area where it's never happened before.

26km away from where I usually have problems.

Yep my MTN is kaput too. It connects and then nothing. Horrible latency if it DOES get data through. And i'm in Centurion.

Same here, and I am in Highveld, Centurion. I have 5 months left on my 2 year contract. Will see what I'll do after that.

Since the begining of the year i have had connection problems with mtn connecting to EDGE or 3G on my cell phone...
Countless times i have complained to MTN and a technician was sent to my house to test the signal. According to him the signal is fine which it does seem to be. I get 3G in most of the house except in my room where i use it the most, there i only get edge.
Sometimes the E sign or the 3G sign starts flashing then goes off, it wont stablize, other times it connects but doesnt receive data, i will open up my phones browser, and try open google home page then i check my connection manager and data gets sent out but no data gets received, i open multiple programs that use internet connection and they all send data but receive none..

I think that's the best description of the problems in this whole thread.

Dude i get *** download speeds and disconnections and i live next to the damn MTN 3g tower i can throw it with a rock.
I am gone start thorowing it with rocks if if disconnects again.

And each time i phone say the connection is slow they say they have already checked and fixed the tower.

:D i know what it is to look at the tower and wonder what the heak is going on...people will start thowing eggs at mtn towers soon

who is responsible for the MTN network?

Hehehe... so our MTN signal is still crap at the office, more than 2 weeks now. I 've logged a call with MTN coverage complaints last week, will see if anything happens.
So, our manager in charge of telephones & comms at the office, since nobody with MTN cellphone here can make or receive phone calls, decided to tell Hellopeter about the signal problem thats dragging on...
Because HER cellphone no is with Nashua Mobile, who does most of the corp cellula accounts here at the office, MTN advised Hellopeter to move the complaint to Nashua Mobile, so they have to sort out the problem.
Umh, why??? Nashua Mobile only does the accounts for some of the corp MTN phones here at the office, rest are with MTNSP, and what about all the private phones, and visitors
And sure enough, Nashua Mobile's response is that they are not responsible for the network coverage and maintenance, so they will have to follow up with MTN...........
En so paas ons die buck :p
As an extra bonus, both MTN-coverage complaints, and Nashua Mobile, keeps phoning us on our MTN cellphones (guess its easier for them).... duh! thats the whole friggin problem : the signal is so bad that our phones do not pick up the calls.

Anyone having problems in the Jhb CBD areas with connectivity?

Well since all the problems were supposed to be resolved it was weird that I started having the same problems again last night.

But last night was worse. Before I just didn't get a connection during certain times. Now I can get one, but it swaps between 3g, edge and gprs every 2mins and sometimes just dropping the connection altogether.

Then I'll try reconnect, but it won't, then a little later I'll get a connection but it'll work for a while then the whole connection just drops.

Well the network just keeps on getting worse and worse. For the past few weeks it been getting slower and from Sunday night it keeps dropping me, and then you are unable to connect for hours at a time. The signal on the user interface shows that I'm getting a 3G signal. The time I most active and also having the most problems is 17:00 till after midnight

Trying to Phone 1555 for help is even more of a pain. I was on hold last night for 2 hour. When they finally pick up they said they put me thu to the help desk in I was cut off. I was able to get thru about a few weeks back and reported the problem (at that time it was just the slowing effect) and gave me a Rev number. Said they will phone me back in a day or 2. Been almost 3 weeks now

Location: Brits, North-West Province
Device: Mtn Huawei PCMCIA Card E620
Problem: Network slowing down, Then disconnecting, Unable to reconnect for hours (signal Shows 3G active)
Phone Number: Well I have quit a few I use, 2gig doesn't last me a month so I have to swap sim cards a lot

3G's dead for me, I get a fluctuating signal but when I connect there's no throughput, signal strength's not a problem. EDGE works sometimes but I keep getting disconnected, not being able to reconnect etc. E220, 2GB PPDB.

I've had so many problem with MTN 3G (prepaid) being slow, not connecting (619 error) that I've switched to Vodacom.

Unfortunately both my wife and I are stuck on voice contract for another 18 months, because it's shocking how often we can't make or receive calls - always a "connection error".

Those are my problems right there.

Also while it happens very rarely, it does happen that sometimes when I want to make a call I get "connection error". Although switching my phone off then on again fixes the issue.

That problem though is at all times. Not just night. Not such a big issue really. Happened like twice in the past two months.

Yep, i have the same experience the last 2 months here in Centurion. The network has either totally deteriorated or got congested to the extend i can barely use it.

EDIT: I see i already posted a few posts back haha...yes my problem is still the same, and yes it's only got worse since my last complaint. I could not use MTN properly at all the last week.

So here I was thinking thing was getting better then it comes and slaps you in the face. Last night (03/11/2008) at 21:00 then network drops me again. The signal show still active but if I Push the Connect button on my Interface I keep getting Connection Failed. Tried my slower Vodacom network and that was working. After about hour and a Half I was able to connect again. Monday night always seems the worst on lag...but getting DC in the middle of my work not being able to Reconnect for hours at a time is REALLY get me mad (could use stronger words here but trying to remain civil)

Last night I couldn't connect for almost 2 hours.

Network decided to take a break from 20:30 to 22:15.
