Router Battery Backup

Probably need to use a micro-ups with USB output,powerbanks tend to be switched supplies

Ramoss Zeus - not cheap, but works well for my Mi-Fi router and cellphones

The normal small mini dc ups' that everyone uses to keep their fibre ONT's and wifi routers powered have more capacity and are cheaper than the one above. They tend to have USB ports too.

Just beware of the latter type. Some say 2400mAh and they are in fact lying as they are 1200mAh max.
 
Currently running my router on an 18ah lead acid battery with a 35v battery charger board that cost me R30.

Board has been set to charge to 13.8v

Made more sense since I have many batteries spare around the house.

Inline UPS has the advantage of being very reliable but the downside is the charger has to be oversized to cover recharging + load. Not a factor if you already have one though.

Would recommend a DC-DC buck-boost board between the battery and router. Should only add another R 70 or so.

Actually that's what I am using to charge the battery, and running the router. Buck Booster charger board

The Romoss powerbanks tend to drop output momentarily when eskom drops/returns, so is usually not the best to be used like a UPS, although I have never had a Zeus to test.

Have an Ultralan 32Wh unit exactly like that which has served us really well over the last 18 months. Very happy with it considering the number of cycles it's been put through.

Been wanting to order a slightly larger unit that can get the router/ONT through the longer outages which are becoming more frequent, and have been holding out for the new Gizzu 60W/69Wh GUP60WPRO model as it has LiFePO4 batteries unlike their older 60W/65Wh model. Not much stock around though, seems like everywhere sold out a month or so ago, although their other models are available. Finally saw it pop up on Takealot yesterday with a "shipped in 5-7 days" note and managed to order one before it sold out again... now to see if I get sent the right model!
 
I have a 12v 1 amp Huawei Telkom ONT and a Netgear 12v 5 amp router
How do I calculate how many hours a mini UPS will last? I find the 10400 mah ones from TL, just make it for 2 hrs in spite of reviews stating it lasts longer

from TL and it lasts 4 hours, yet with Level 6 load shedding it does not seem to have enough time to charge between the cycles to last another 4 hours
What type of specs must I look for? I am confused by the wh and mah and watt to evaluate the mini UPS

Personally I just look at watts and Wh, the mAh can muddy the waters as the watts you can get out also depends on the voltage of the batteries. If you're drawing 10 watts you need more than 40Wh to last four hours (real world capacity will always be a bit under the stated specs). In terms of those two Gizzu 60W models I mentioned earlier, the older model was 17600mAh and new model 21600mAh, but this translates into 69Wh for the new model vs 65Wh for the old as the LiFePO4 batteries are slightly lower voltage than the lithium-ion batteries in the older model. Wh is a better reflection of the usable capacity imo.

Charging speed is a different factor, and sounds like an important one in your case. Some products state how fast they can recharge.

I bought one that looks exactly the same. I wanted the USB out to power one of my indoor camera's. It works , but every now and again the USB power failed and I had to manually unplug the camera and plug it back in again. I replaced the mini UPS now with a slightly more expensive one and it works 100%

What is the distance of the cable run from ups to camera?
 
3m is not excessive for usb. Is the replacement ups rated for the same mha or higher? I presume the same cable was used to the camera with the replacement?
