Yes but will the fibre work to your house?
Hopefully providers of all types are investing in backup solutions. Extended backup solutions.
 
Ok, more digging. Some local datacenters, one said 6 diesel generators to provide enough for 6 days, further details showed upgrades for solar power installations that provide over 6MW for their data centers, so... technically, that should then keep them going even without diesel fuel - provided that they have gone through with those upgrades or else, it seems an average of 5-6 days we have before we move to smoke signals and tapping rocks.

You're either going to have to get several accounts or downscale your streaming

The satellite would be as backup so the cheapest plan and money spent on knowing you'll have internet if your provider goes tits up, assuming that no local provider is needed and the connection is between you and satellite and some Western provider and not you->satellite->local Vodacom etc.

This is good to know but will that ensure fibre works. Do they not need to provide some backup power locally as well or is it all ONT at home <- 20km of fiberoptic cable -> big datacentre?

Usually you have POPs inbetween that need power too. That is where your risk lies, and not at the big datacentre.

What does a typical POP look like? Would be interesting to see if I can spot one driving near home, then should spot a generator, then atleast know it has backup power.

Edit: ok, yeah seems middlemen in lastmile... not sure how to find what powers them or what they look like. Who controls the internet in SA

Ok, so as it's only battery, the lifespan is very limited once stage 6+ happens then. Glad I didn't splash too much on my router UPS.

I did buy 1 for someone at N1 City not online though but they only had 2 left in store this morning.

Also available at builders for R1599 but the only 2 stores with stock is in JHB and Alberton they guy in store at cape gate said they can order from other branches if your local store does not have stock

Which battery mini ups, type devices would be suitable for my MSI Modern 14 Laptop with a 65watt power supply, need around 4 hours minimum run time.

Its good, does what its supposed to, i have one, not the lithium version, the battery really doesnt last long, from new, 6 months later and the battery barely lasts over 1.5hrs... so every 6 months i have to change the battery, but then again we get load shed like for 10hrs a day so maybe not enough time to fully charge the battery...

i got one for my dad and niece and both of them are happy with it, lasts well over 2 hrs for them, but they dont have as much load shedding as us
