Hi guys, I'm not rooted...running GINGERBREAD.XWKF3. I had good WiFi internet access at work until they implemented a proxy server. Now so far only the default web browser can access the internet, can't connect with Opera, Whatsapp, Play Store etc. Is there a way around this without rooting?

Either update to ICS or JB which has built in proxy support, or root and install proxydroid.

If you prefer AOKP, give NeatROM a try. I am currently using it.
If you are talking about the multiwindow then there should be a edit button at the bottom of that pull out tab. Then you can remove the apps you don't want to use (just slide it to the open dark area next to the "pop out drawer tab thing")
I have had hell trying to use Kies to upgrade to a newer OS version. On Windows 7 my the drivers don't get installed ("Samsung Mobile MTP Device Failed") and Kies keeps showing a "connecting" message where the name of the phone is supposed to be displayed. On XP Kies crashes at startup, any other ideas for upgrading?

Have you tried updating OTA from the device itself? WIFI recommended in this case.
Go to settings - about - software update.
It says "No update available".

I have flashed the leaked official JB 4.1.2, But there is n big bug with apn settings can't save or edit the settings. and it keeps on dissapearing i am on MTN. I can only acces the internet thru wifi. So i desided to flash back to ICS and everything is working now

Your APN settings is on the sim card....Let me guess, you have a very old sim card?
But you can edit the APN settings and input it manually.

Everytime i edit the MCC and MNC and save it. the APN dissapears. And when mtn send the settings i can save it but the settings does not work. When edit the mtn setting and enter the MCC MNC numbers. save and close it. the mtn apn dissapears

Which version of NeatROM is that? I am using NeatROM Lite v4.0 (JB leak). Before that I was using Resurrection Remix 3.1.3.
I must say, there is a massive difference between AOKP and Samsung based ROM's, but for the most part they are equally functional. Quite enjoying the JB leak

I have tried the steps you mentioned re the multiwindow editing, doesn't allow me to add other applications to it or to remove the currrent apps residing within it. Very odd..
EDIT: Fixed it. Needed to disable multi window, reboot, enable it and it worked. Link for the fix if anyone wants it:

So Odin is not just for rooting? I can use it to upgrade my firmware? The instructions I have seen online so far are for rooting.

Same - NearROM Lite 4.0.
There are lots of things you can do to get better battery life. Using a bloatware free JB is in my opinion the first step. Then load a proper kernel which you can undervolt or underclock. Switch off features you don't need or use. Use darker backgrounds and set apps to dark themes if it is possible. I am back to +-4.5hrs screen on time over +-28hrs (this is my target medium usage). I can probably get 2 days easily with light usage, but then ... why would I not want to use my phone

I used XFA, but could never see the point in changing CSC.
I think:
XFE = 8ta ????? not sure
XFA = All operators
XFV = Vodacom
XFC = CellC
XFM = MTN
I could be very wrong, but as I said, never could see the point and never bothered me.

Ah, I remember the days of undervolting and underclocking my S2... Running single core mode and all that jazz... Strange how I am not so obsessed in getting 2+ days of battery life anymore, I prefer the features. But now I am curious to see how long I could get it to last in JB with a single core and what the performance would be like.
I figured out the multiwindow issue (disable, reboot, enable), I will definitely reflash the fix for it later on. Going for the transparent one
I have a little story about kernels, and the value of checking your stuff carefully...
So I saw the Siyah kernel posts, and set about installing it. I had Phil'z kernel installed, default for NeatROM Lite 4.0. You need a later version (3.99) to be able to install Siyah b4. Off I go, following links from one page to another, finding myself at Phil's download zone. I couldn't find the XXLSJ-specific kernel, but you can often download one very similar (XXLS6 looked right) and have it work. I only needed it to boot into recovery after all. I would be installing Siyah straight after.
The initial download was -CHN. Bad idea. Wouldn't install. I grabbed the -XJB version instead. Looks safe. Struggled with the install as well, so I disabled the Signature verification in Recovery (see where this is going?) and tried again. Worked this time.
So I reboot into Recovery - only it doesn't. I get a slow crawl across the screen, moving from black to white. Ever so slowly, like a virus. I panicked. I tried to reboot into recovery again. Same thing. I pulled the battery, and booted into download mode. That worked, at least. Off to that page where I had pulled the kernels from to find a ODIN-ready kernel. That's when I looked at the source of the link - it was the XDA forum for the N7000 Galaxy Note! :wtf:
After that it was a simple matter of shooting off to the SGS2 forum, checking the index for custom kernels, finding the correct page for Philz kernel, and sending that to my phone. All ended well, I am on the Siyah kernel again, and I didn't lose anything.
Moral of the story: Check which forum you are in when traversing links in XDA!! Oh, and make a backup before making any changes. Have ODIN handy in case you need it to recover from a really bad flash, and always keep a copy of SamMobile's latest stock (you never know when you will have to flash stock...) firmware close by.

PhillZ's earlier recovery versions were crap - can't install .zip for any update. I didn't go through all the schleb to install a later release and then a .zip version of Siyah. I got Mobile Odin and flashed the .tar version (Siyah) straight away. Worked fine for me. I could have mentioned it in some of my posts, but clean forgot about the problems with PhillZ's recovery
