Yeah I've tried to root with a zip for the wrong modem/android version. Nice thing about the S2 is its almost impossible to brick, had to install stock ROM and root it, but then I could access my backup image and all was good again.I have a little story about kernels, and the value of checking your stuff carefully...
So I saw the Siyah kernel posts, and set about installing it. I had Phil'z kernel installed, default for NeatROM Lite 4.0. You need a later version (3.99) to be able to install Siyah b4. Off I go, following links from one page to another, finding myself at Phil's download zone. I couldn't find the XXLSJ-specific kernel, but you can often download one very similar (XXLS6 looked right) and have it work. I only needed it to boot into recovery after all. I would be installing Siyah straight after.
The initial download was -CHN. Bad idea. Wouldn't install. I grabbed the -XJB version instead. Looks safe. Struggled with the install as well, so I disabled the Signature verification in Recovery (see where this is going?) and tried again. Worked this time.
So I reboot into Recovery - only it doesn't. I get a slow crawl across the screen, moving from black to white. Ever so slowly, like a virus. I panicked. I tried to reboot into recovery again. Same thing. I pulled the battery, and booted into download mode. That worked, at least. Off to that page where I had pulled the kernels from to find a ODIN-ready kernel. That's when I looked at the source of the link - it was the XDA forum for the N7000 Galaxy Note! :wtf:
After that it was a simple matter of shooting off to the SGS2 forum, checking the index for custom kernels, finding the correct page for Philz kernel, and sending that to my phone. All ended well, I am on the Siyah kernel again, and I didn't lose anything.
Moral of the story: Check which forum you are in when traversing links in XDA!! Oh, and make a backup before making any changes. Have ODIN handy in case you need it to recover from a really bad flash, and always keep a copy of SamMobile's latest stock (you never know when you will have to flash stock...) firmware close by.

I did a similar thing with Kernels - flashed an ICS Kernel instead of a GB Kernel.

Worked for me when I flashed stock fw. You can also flash a modified kernel while flashing stock fw. FRANKENSTEIN IT
That brings up another point: I have been toying with the idea of putting a GB ROM back on - don't ask me why - but I don't know if it will be worth the effort. Those of you on Gingerbread that have used ICS/JB: Why is it worth going back, as it were?

Thanks to both of you for the heads up, I tried flashing Siyah v6 but it would not allow me in PhillZ's recovery...

I also use XFA, cos I hated Vodacom's animated gif spoiling my funky startup screen.

The last Gingerbread ROM is an Italian one (2.3.6) and it's awesome.
Damn, now I also have the itch to put it on my phone.

*Mind you, the Samsung JB Test ROM is just too nice. I am keeping it.

I can't understand why Google Chrome still suck soo bad on Android.
It crashes more than it's actually working, and if it's working, it sucks up all your system RAM.
Feels like Go Launcher running on your S2.

I've NEVER seen Chrome crash. And I use it everyday.

On your S2? And how was the RAM usage? Mine goes sky high with the JB Test ROM.

LOL stock anything was the last thing I expected to hear from you two
Now you made me laugh... Kinda ironic for me, but there are reasons why I always return to stock. I have tested about 7 different roms, 7 different kernels, 15 modems and combinations thereof and for me the following worked:
GB: CheckROM based in XWLA4 with ICS Domination (+ mods) and JKay deluxe - Siyah kernel (the one that came with CR) - whatever modem for SA at the time
ICS: Stock XXLPD with ICS Domination (+ mods) and JKay deluxe - Speedmod kernel - LPS modem
JB: NeatROM Lite 4.0 with mods - Siyah kernel - LS6 modem
Apart from stock, my favourite roms in order are Resurrection Remix, CyanogenMod and NeatROM (others not worth mentioning as far as my preferences are concerned)
Best kernel ever and by far is Siyah. GM develops and doesn't only cherry pick cool features from other kernels without proper testing.
EDIT: Oh yes... And I kept 58 stable nandroid backups. Did probably close to 80. That is a lot of flashing considering I had my S2 since 11-2011
