If this is true, then there won't be a huge difference. I have tried various roms and my usage does not really differ hugely from one rom to another. Here you need to take care which kernel with which rom works best. It is a bit of trial and error, but one can easily get 2 days with light-moderate usage. The moment you go moderate-heavy usage, there is no way you will get 2 days between charges.

So true!

I can make my phone's battery last for two weeks if I really want to, just switch off packet data and change all account settings from auto sync to manual. Easy peasy.

But then you're not really using your phone & who are you trying to impress?

From experience, six hours screen-on time is the average if you're using the extended battery.

Fully agreed. Kernel, kernel setup allied to usage are the most important aspects. But I was referring more to the bloatware that is installed on most Samsung based ROMs, they do contribute to higher battery drain (not my that much mind) :)

You can disable all of it. Not difficult.

but didn't feel it gives enough extra for not being able to use my DSTV Drifta.
You cant generally use the Drifta client on any custom ROM. Multichoice checks & disallows it because they can't control whether output will be sent externally e.g. via a HDMI cable.

I've tried almost everything out there, and for me CM10.1 (Nightlies) represents the most current (independently evolved) iteration of Google's Android OS. CM10.1 does not include any "cyberpunked" visual modification to Google's standard Nexus/Holo design style, rather it only adds refinements and the ability to customise almost everything.

Basically a custom ROM for grown ups.

Something really wrong with your setup then....maybe signal or an app?

Here is a screenshot of my screen-on time, and I will definitely get 6 hours or more + I have BBC News widget, weather widget, Flipboard widgets running with auto update on different home screens.

Do you use wifi or keep your S2 on 3G/HSPA+ the whole time & is your wifi router far from your phone?

Phone is basically constantly on wifi, tried some fixes online but nothing helped. My previous stock ICS install was fine, my new slim install is fine - the only issue for me is the JB Rom. Have no idea what it is but doesn't really bother me because I'm definitely not going back to it.

If you're rooted and have your gps working please post your "gps.conf" for me please? It sits in your "/etc" directory. Also state what OS you using (If I can get a gps.conf from a rooted jb/ics official that would be great). I'm using SlimRom but struggling to get my GPS working properly, so want to try mess with the gps.conf file before I try another ROM.
Not sure if totally related, but I also had some funnies with GPS lock speed (& compass calibration) on CM10.1.

If I remember right, what fixed it for me was installing GPS Test Plus. Seems like it modifies the GPS/Compass configuration, maybe give it a try.

ah Sweet thanks man will try it out.

Recently got an S2, but keeps reconnecting with kies..
Can't even update the phone...
My S3 on the other works fine, what could this be ?
Get rid of Kies - I can't remember if it came from the ANC or the devil himself, but it is evil! Anything you wanted to do with Kies, you can do without having the schleb of dealing with Kies.

I also want to do a CWM ROOT, how can i backup old OS for Restore later ?
You do not need to backup the old os (stock firmware). Whenever you want to reflash stock firmware, you can grab it of XDA or sammobile or any other site that hosts it and then reflash it.

When following this method, Kies must not be running! Also, be warned that you will be stuck with a yellow triangle at bootup when following this method.

I am having trouble getting a GPS lock on Maps. I am on Slimrom. Any ideas how to fix this?

When did you flash your ROM. Some take a bit longer first time round. What connections are you using to lock the GPS signal? Network or GPS or both?

Cool ! Big Tx.
Which method would you recommend and which firmware to load, i know there is a lot of different versions ?
Also what can be used to backup my user data contacts, messages, pics etc. ?

Hey guys, I've temporarily returned to my GS2 as my GS3 screen broke. Must say, thoroughly enjoying this little beast on Jelly Bean, it feels a bit faster than my GS3 in some Menus, TBH, makes one wonder why one was in such a rush to upgrade last year, but anyway this is STILL such a fantastic phone to use.

Only one problem, there's a 7mb OTA update that I keep trying to do. The phone downloads the update, then reboots as if its doing the update, temporarily shows the Droid Robot being updated with the line at the bottom but then it quickly boots up and says 'update failed try again using Kies', I'd rather not touch Kies, what could be causing the update to fail?

Get a JB firmware from XDA and install that in the way it was described in the link you posted. I like the Netherlands or German firmwares (personal choice), but you can pick any one. They also recommend Odin3_v3.04.zip which you can get from the same link.
Get PhilZ kernel from XDA matching the firmware you installed and place it on the phone's sdcard. PhilZ kernel is a modified kernel - stock kernel with root priviledges. Also, you should not get the pesky yellow triangle.
Go into recovery and flash the kernel from the internal sdcar.
If you did all this correctly, you will have a rooted phone with CWM recovery.

Get (and pay for) Titanium Backup (TB) from the Play Store (it will be one of the best purchases you can make)
To backup contacts - use either TB (to external sd) or back it up to Google (I use both)
To backup messages, internet favourites and wifi AP's - use TB to external sd
To backup the phone apps and data - use TB to external sd
To backup your personal files (music, photos, movies, TB backup files, etc) - copy over USB cable to PC

Disclaimer: Flashing any modified firmware or kernel not supplied be Samsung or through that horrible thing they call Kies onto your phone is risky. There is a chance of damaging your phone or even bricking it. Read all the instructions carefully! A lot of us have flashed hundreds of times without issues, but this remains your risk. Oh yes ... and you might rsik losing your warranty ... but we don't care :D

EDIT: Links and disclaimer added

EDIT EDIT: And seeing you are in P-town, if you manage to completely mess up your phone like a buddy of mine has done a couple of times, we can meet and I will help you fix the mess for ZAR12 434 834 943.00 - Cash upfront!

EDIT LAST EDIT: Non negotiable

It's probably cos you're not using the official SA ROM. It can recognise if your phone is not using the official one.

Dont understand your steps?

If all you want is rooted stock, go into (stock) download, flash stock Samsung ROM file (.tar.md5) with Odin, then flash Philz kernel file (.tar.md5) after that. Reboot and you're done.

EDIT: Download (boot with Vol Dn+Home+Pwr) not Recovery (Vol Up+Home+Pwr)

That's the part that usually confuses me. I am using Omega V11 (based on AOKP Build 6). Which version of PhilZ kernel should I use?
