I am absolutely amazed by the past two days posts (see especially Curtix2 and the others):
If you buy a Uno, you get one. No frills, no filter coffee, no roadside assistance, no redundancy backup.
But if you buy a car WITH a Motorplan, roadside assistance AND redundancy, you should expect it (of course)!
Come on guys, be fair to the budget service providers! You get what you pay for and there is nothing wrong with it! Just think next time before you buy!

well i managed to pull something last night, so i think it may have sorted or came back last night for a bit but once again this morning i had absolutly nothiing...
i managed to pull 36gigs on saturday thats about 1.5gigs an hour but yesterday in 22hrs i only got 550mb's@!!!!!@@!#@!$%@^#%&*%(*&*^*&U$%E$R@!##$~!$#@!%#^
thats from the same news server & same 4mb line!!!!!!
oh u talk about u get what u pay for, im on one of those uncapped express accounts thats just over 1k monthly!!!
its not that u get what u pay for, as the ISP's are killing & robbing us!!!@#@#$%^*&^*^%$#@!#

How does it effect our internet then? Its no where near us?

It affects us because that is the cable that Seacom relies on for their upstream. I think the main reason we got confused is because ISPs kept on referring to Seacom as being down, which is true, so we then assumed the repairs were being performed on the Seacom cable, which is not true.

Ummm, SEACOM currently only goes as far as Mumbai, after that it relies on SEA-ME-WE 4 for ongoing connectivity to Europe and the rest of the world:

Sorry for bringing up this topic once again but I have a beef with some of the misleading information going on here. I've noticed that some users are being flamed for not knowing the difference between the Seacom cable and the SEA-ME-WE 4 cable.
Doing some scratching around I've noticed where a lot of this misleading comes from.
This misinformation or omission of facts comes from both the ISPs and MyBB staff writers. If you do some reading inside some of the articles you will find the correct information but some of the quotes and summaries are totally wrong. No wonder people are confused.

Well regardless, you'd think any cable owner that lays a cable to connect point A to [entire world] would have backups/redundancies in place when doing so. This basically means Seacom links up to one single cable in order to get access to the rest of the world.
This also implies that if one single link goes "poof" , the entire Seacom cable become absolutely useless ?
That's kinda like paying a billion rand for a new railway system from Pretoria to Pofadder and then having a crappy , broken railway system from Pofadder->Anywhere else. So now it's dirt cheap and super fast to go to Pofadder.......but there's nothing there.
I can only hope Seacom either links up to other cables or the one they're linking up to is not as crappy as it sounds, since i swear i hear "Maintenance" relative to Seacom way too often. We hear it from SAT-3 too, but at least i've never experienced "total blackout" as often and for such lengthy periods [slow down in speeds is understandable, but totallly -nothing- for an entire day [working day at that too] ?].
I suppose i'm beginning to see why SAT-3 bandwidth is still R60 p/GB and Seacom bandwidth R20 p/GB ...crappy cables, crappy maintenance, no backup?

The SEACOM cable was built to last 25 years. At PRESENT it relies on one cable for onward connection, but many new cables will come online by the end of 2010. Once that happens it will be truly interconnected and useful.
Why do you think all ISP's didn't suddenly switch a year ago?
