Hi Guys,

I am posting this thread in the hopes that perhaps one of the mybroadband users with a bit of pull at telkom (wishful thinking I know) will be able to provide a reason/resolution as it seems there is a widespread problem with the Telkom network currently and nobody at telkom is providing adequate feedback or even acknowledging the problem.

The following are commonly posted issues over the past few weeks/months:

1.) Uncommonly high latency.
2.) Ping "spikes" or "timeouts."
3.) Packet loss to varying degrees.
4.) Slow thoughput in general.

The above four issues are repeatedly posted by forumites or confirmed by other forumites as can be seen in the following recent threads.

In almost all cases Line attenuation, SNR Margins, etc are well within acceptable limits and even when telkom tests the line/lines there are no issues that can be detected from their side.

I have personally tried multiple routers, ISP's, Line filters, cables and everything I can possibly think of that could be wrong from the user side. Absolutely nothing is wrong and Telkom repeatedly denies and closes line fault reports.

I have run trace routes and ping tests, even using the telkom guest account, and in every case the results are always similar to my own ISP's. There appears to be no common time occurence and my personal issues are constant throughout both the day and evening.

I appeal to anybody with more experience dealing with Telkom or more knowledge about the current situation to please assisst or point us in the right direction as reporting the faults through ordinary channels is both pointles and frustrating.

Have you tried your pc/laptop on another persons line?

and post a tracert to international site

Yes both the laptop and desktop I have here experience the exact same problems, I have also run the tests at another residence using the laptop and all appears perfect from there so it can't be the hardware.

See this for tracert's.

looks normal dont see anything terribly wrong with telkoms network (just shows a bit of congestion, but it shouldnt cause any problems)

problems start when going international with timeouts

cant think of anything else which could cause it, since physical line looks fine with readings

I think there is a Telkom issue of sorts. I am unable to authenticate on 3 different accounts on different networks but as far as Telkom is concerned my line is syncing

Perhaps this is related, but the issues I have been experiencing have been going on for months now.

Ah sorry. wanted to address Jongi there. didnt quote. my apologies.

Yup. A few of us lost international access for a few minutes about 30 minutes ago. Since then international access has been erratic and local pings unstable.

Affected myself: IS (international) - Axxess SAIX (Local) - TelkomInternet and M-Web subscribers + a few others also confirmed in another thread here.

Sounds like there is an issue somewhere.

Running a tracert to an international address isn't going to show you what you are looking for as a tracert is more helpful in identifying a problem specific to a server or route to a server. a better look at the issue i am experiencing is to look at a constant ping as the problem is both intermittent and yet constant over every tested variable.... so either the fault lies with the DSLAM (telkom says nothing's wrong), the fault lies at the exchange or the fault lies somewhere else within telkoms core network. I am enclined to believe the later as this is a similar experience from multiple users in varying destinations all over South Africa.

This seems to be a big problem for many since the beginning of the year. My line for example was down all of Feb and since it's been back, my 4096 syncing line with perfect stats has been similar to that of dial-up with random timeouts, etc. Currently I've had a fault open since beginning March and have escalated it and spoken to supervisors at Telkoms call center as well as they say it's an exchange issue and is still being fixed. For example, off peak and on cached downloads I was only able to download 60mb in 2 hours and I get lucky if my line performs equal to that of a 384 line. The best speed I've gotten lately was 1.3Mb/s and that's for the whole month already

well my international dioed about an hour ago.. 12am tonight on the 16th-17th march..
all of a sudden no communication at all & now im pulling about a quarter of what i normally do... im just able to get 100kb/s whereas before i was pulling my normal 435kb/s.. & nothing has changed on my end...

this happened about a week ago for at least about 4 hours but that was when my exchange went down...
they still havent even upgraded it yet.. not since aug.. but anywho...

is anyone else experiancing propblems in the bergvliet cape town area???

I think many of us have made the same mistake. Saw the title, knew we were having issues.. responded to the last post we saw in the thread.

Assumptions... :(

Yeah, common problems on forums, but it's all goood.

Well, it appears my internet is 100% stable for the first time in months. I reported another fault wednesday evening via the telkom website and within 24 hrs the fault had been closed, no notifications or calls from telkom mind you, and now my line is 100% stable. Perhaps it was a known issue and once it was fixed they did not feel a need to notify me, anyway I am just happy that after 2 mnths of this I am finally experiencing the internet connection I am paying an arm and a leg for. Let's just hope it lasts :)
