Hey guys

I need to know if my friends line can go to 4mb. He is with Mweb uncapped and he recently didn't have internet for a month cause his line wouldn't sync or something, Telkom said it was lightening damage :erm:, so here is a SNR of his line.

What I don't understand is why would the router say he can get 5mb+- but according to this guide http://www.naschenweng.info/2008/10/16/adsl-significance-of-snr-and-attenuation he shouldn't be able to, I ask this cause he has had 4mb uncapped from Mweb for well over a year and never had a problem until a month ago?

Mweb has downgraded his speed to 1mb which is currently stable but can't we push it up to a faster speed?

Your thought's please

55 is high, yes you need take telkom copper lines which is not good etc.

should be able to get 4mps i think

Gonna be close imo. Request 4mbps and then drop it to 3 if necessary.

Telkom lines do that where the stats suddenly change (invariably for the worse). I wonder what does that. Seems to coincide with getting a different portnum too.

nice thanks, he has a attenuation of 55.0 db =
Attainable Rate (ADSL1) - kb/s 3681
Attainable Rate (ADSL2+) - kb/s 3923
Distance to the exchange (metres) 3983

So I rate 4mb is possible, but 3mb should be stable?

Yup, I'd also wager on 3mb, unless there are other factors that's degrading the line so bad that 1mb is the only stable connection Mweb can produce. Maybe tell your friend to give them a call and ask that they up it to 3mb so he can test the stability of it. After-all he is paying for a 4mb connection :D Best of luck to him

edit: Also, if you look at the chart you posted, the attainable rate showed there is most likely a calculation by the router for 'max attainable rate' because his exchange is still g.dmt. If you look at the upstream section you will see '792', afaik only 512 upstream in SA even for 10mb dsl connections. He will see improvement once they upgrade the exchange. Please consider the edit as speculation though as i'm not too sure about the facts :)
