Sony has recently announced the Z1 compact at CES. The phone is pretty much a Z1 but in a smaller shell.

The only difference in specs are a 720p screen, smaller battery and a 4.3" screen.

As far as I know, its the only miniature phone derived from a flagship with only minor spec change

Will be interesting to see at what price point this comes in :)

"Pricing for the Xperia Z1 Compact is unclear, but Sony confirmed to News24 that the device will be launched in SA in February this year."

Hopefully won't be too long before we see the new deals.

Interesting to see a compact phone that will actually hold true to it's bigger sibling :-) unlike the last lot of minis that have come out.

That's exactly what I was looking for but it wasn't available when I got myself the Z... Now I really love the big screen and replaced that with a Note 2 :)

Any one hear of any local pre-orders or deals yet for this phone?

Get the sense this phone is gonna be almost same price as z1 :( starting to look at lg g2 as alternative

Allow me to just say: "*gibber* *drool*

If Sony wanted to get some numbers going, they'd offer this puppy for $50-100 less than the regular Z1. Some of us are afraid of the effects of the exchange rate on the price for this little darling

R9,000?????????

Let me repeat that: R9-WTF-thousand-seriously????

:(

R9k is a crazy price, I agree. Clove in the UK are selling it for GBP332.50, which works out at about R6k; you'd have to add some duties, but I don't think that would increase the price by another 50%. Our prices are seriously out of kilter with those of other countries - again!

Importing, with shipping and customs, should add about R1000-R1,500, assuming the exchange rate holds. That puts it squarely in the region of Orange's R7,600 price, which also gives one local representation (for whatever that's worth).

FWIW:
I'm rather going for Xperia SP though FNB, it think it will serve my purposes at a more acceptable price (R199 with 24 month warranty). Dont need the water and dust proofing and added specs of z1 compact at the cost R4k more than the SP. Might have considered the orange offer except that Orange only offer a 12 month warranty on all sony products and 3 week turnaround time for repair according to my call to their call centre today.

The Xperia SP has the same chipset as my One S, with slightly bigger screen and 40% bigger battery. The Z1 Compact is a real step up, but the local price is a bit ridiculous.

I thought R7000 odd was the actual figure. Maybe a very high dollar rate is to blame for high pricing.

Their is a new thread started I think this morning

Is there another thread
Anyway, I now have 2 Z1 compacts (1 for wife). Awesome little phone, not a days trouble out of both.
Battery life is great, 2 days with heavy use.

Lollipop for the Z1 compact is now available via the Sony PC Companion software
