Tata Altroz: Leaked video reveals more details - Team-BHP

A leaked video of the Tata Altroz has revealed new details of the upcoming hatchback. The video shows a top view of the Altroz with the front doors open to almost 90-degree angles.



The interior shot of the car reveals the Altroz's dashboard layout with blue ambient lighting. The centre console houses a floating touchscreen infotainment system.



A closer look at the screen reveals an ambient lighting icon. It might also get a Google-based voice command system.



The video also reveals that the car has a 3-spoke, multi-function steering wheel. In addition to the usual audio and phone controls, it also has a cruise control button.

The instrument cluster is similar to the Harrier's. It has a digital screen on the left and an analogue speedometer on the right-hand side.



The Tata Altroz is expected to be offered with 1.2-litre petrol and turbocharged petrol engines mated to manual gearboxes. Tata might also add a 1.5-litre diesel and an automatic transmission option later.

Tata Altroz launch pushed to early 2020


One of Tata’s most anticipated launches is its new premium hatchback – the Altroz. First revealed in concept form at the 2018 Auto Expo (it was called the 45X then), the production-spec Altroz was expected to arrive later this year or early next year, and there were talks of it launching with BS4-compliant engines and then following it up with BS6 units a few months later. However, this plan was scrapped and Tata has done a rethink as that would make planning in the first phase complicated. We can now confirm that Tata Motors has pushed the launch to early 2020, in order to equip the model with BS6-compliant engines.

Better for TATA to delay the launch of the Altroz to next year and equip it from the outset exclusively with BS6-compliant engines, than to have a two-tier situation occurring, with different engine emissions legislation requirements, within such a short space of time after they hit the showroom floors.

Tata Motors has released the detailed specifications of the upcoming Altroz hatchback.

The new Altroz measures 3,990 mm in length, 1,755 mm in width, 1,523 mm in height and has a wheelbase of 2,501 mm. The car has a ground clearance of 165 mm. It comes with a 37-litre fuel tank and has a 345-litre boot.

The Altroz comes with automatic projector headlamps with LED daytime running lights, rain sensing wipers, 7-inch MID, 7-inch touchscreen infotainment head-unit with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.

It also gets automatic climate control with rear AC vents, cruise control and Multi Drive Modes - Eco and City.

The new Altroz will be available with BS6 compliant petrol and diesel engines.

The 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder, naturally aspirated petrol engine produces 85 BHP @ 6,000 rpm and 113 Nm @ 3,300 rpm.

The 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder turbocharged diesel unit puts out 89 BHP @ 4,000 rpm and 200 Nm @ 1,250-3,000 rpm.

Both engines will be offered with a 5-speed manual transmission.

Tata Motors revealed the Altroz on 3 December, and we will soon bring you our first drive review of the premium hatchback on 9 December.

We already know that the Tata Altroz will be offered with two BS6 engines at launch - a 1.2L naturally-aspirated petrol unit and a 1.5L turbo-diesel motor.

However, we have some exclusive details for enthusiasts looking out for a performance-oriented version. A turbocharged petrol motor is under development for the Altroz, and will make its way into production soon.

The aforementioned model will be powered by a 1.2-litre three-cylinder, turbocharged (VGT), BS6 petrol engine that will put out a maximum of 100bhp (102PS) and a peak torque of 140Nm (83Kw).

This motor will be available with two transmissions - a five-speed manual and a seven-speed DCT.

Unlike the dry-clutch DCT's in the Hyundai Venue and Kia Seltos, the dual-clutch automatic gearbox in the Altroz will be a wet-clutch unit. So, it is unlikely to face heating issue.

We can also confirm that the Tata Altroz will be launched in India in January 2020.

Our sources claim that the performance-oriented Altroz will enter into production soon, and a market launch can be expected around the festive period (August to October 2020).

The hot hatch will feature a more sophisticated suspension setup, which should augment its handling prowess.

We can also expect the hot hatchback to feature certain cosmetic changes to complement its sporty demeanour.

As far as pricing is concerned, the turbocharged Tata Altroz is expected to carry a premium of around Rs 30,000 over the regular version. The sportier Altroz will compete against the Maruti Suzuki Baleno RS and the Volkswagen Polo GT TSI.
