Tata Altroz

Tata Altroz Review - carandbike

The much talked of Tata Altroz premium hatchback is ready for launch. It is being driven in with a petrol and diesel option - both BS6 compliant.

The car takes Tata into a new segment, where it hopes to make a dent in the ever popular Maruti Suzuki Baleno and Hyundai i20's share - while also expanding the always hot premium hatchback segment.

We test the car's two engine variants in the picturesque landscape of Jaisalmer, that also provides brilliant roads for our test.

Here is the most detailed review of the Tata Altroz, I tell you everything about the design, interior, features, performance, ride, handling, braking, steering, price and of course give you a verdict on whether you should buy the Tata Altroz in India.

This Tata Altroz review is a long drive one with a real-world perspective of the premium hatchback from Tata Motors.

If the local importers for TATA in SA ever decided to bring the Altroz range into the SA market and a higher-spec performance JTP model fitted with the Nexon turbo-petrol engine & 6-speed manual or DCT gearbox was offered, I would definitely go out & purchase it.

Unfortunately though, this looks more & more like it will never happen here in SA, seeing as the last 'new' model they launched in SA was the Bolt sedan & hatchback variants, which was about 4-5 years ago already.

The ENTIRE range of current TATA passenger vehicle models now sold in India - the Tiago hatch, the Tigor sedan, the Nexon CUV, the Hexa MPV, the Harrier 5-seater & Gravitas 7-seater SUV's - are NOT offered for sale in SA at all - so I guess all we can do for now is watch the test review videos & 'wish upon a star' that at some point in the future (hopefully before the Sun implodes & becomes a red giant), current-generation TATA vehicles will once again be on offer on showroom floors in SA.

Tata Altroz 110BHP diesel being planned - Team-BHP

Rumours suggest that Tata Motors is planning to introduce a 110 BHP (82 kW) diesel engine in the Altroz. Depending on the sales volumes of the Altroz, the carmaker might consider the high performance diesel.

It could be launched by the end of 2021 as a JTP variant.

At present, we know that the Altroz will be offered with BS6 compliant petrol and diesel engines. The 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder, naturally aspirated petrol engine produces 85 BHP (63 kW) @ 6,000 rpm and 113 Nm @ 3,300 rpm. The 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder turbocharged diesel unit puts out 89 BHP (66 kW) @ 4,000 rpm and 200 Nm @ 1,250-3,000 rpm.

Both engines will be offered with a 5-speed manual transmission.

TATA’s Second Five Star Car: Altroz Delivers A Strong Result For Adult Occupant Protection - Global NCAP

Global NCAP launches the new round of #SaferCarsForIndia crash test results today with the welcome support of the FIA Foundation and Bloomberg Philanthropies.

The recently launched TATA Altroz reaches a strong 5 stars for adult and three stars for child occupant protection. Global NCAP chose the entry-level model.

David Ward, CEO and President of Global NCAP said:

“The latest result in our #SaferCarsforIndia crash tests shows a strong signal that TATA is moving its fleet to 5-star levels of safety performance. We would like to encourage all other car manufacturers in India to follow TATA’s example and bring affordable 5-star cars to Indian consumers.”

“The Indian government’s minimum crash test standards are clearly helping to eliminate any new zero star cars from the market, and we will continue to work with them to ensure the push of regulatory requirements is complimented by the pull of consumer awareness, encouraging the demand for ever higher levels of safety.”

TATA Altroz
The Altroz achieved a solid five stars for adult occupant protection and three stars for child occupant protection. The Altroz offers 2 frontal airbags as standard. Its structure and its footwell area were rated as stable.

The Tata Altroz turbo petrol made a brief appearance on Tata Motors' official website before it was taken down. Images of the Altroz turbo petrol had appeared under the features and downloads section of the website.

It is expected to be paired to a 5-speed manual transmission. It could also get a dual-clutch automatic transmission.

At present, the Altroz comes with a naturally aspirated 1.2-litre petrol engine that makes 85 BHP @ 6,000 rpm and 113 Nm @ 3,300 rpm and a 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder turbocharged diesel unit that puts out 89 BHP @ 4,000 rpm and 200 Nm @ 1,250-3,000 rpm.

Both engines come paired with a 5-speed manual transmission.
