Telkom blasts MWEB’s transit cut decision

I don't think you guys truly understand why the big ISP don't want to peer with the likes of MWEB, sure they charge for interconnect rates, but its simple, in the industry there would most likely be a standard rate for that (you cant sell for more than you buy unless you have all the chips), Telkom uses MTN's network and pays for its use. Then vice- verse, so at the end of the day companies only gain any "profit" if their own network gets used more than what it uses other companies networks.

Now with the majority of internet users in SA using mobile phones to access the internet and the rest using telkom, that's where most of the traffic is. Now along comes MWEB with their little user base in comparison to the big ISP's and demands open peering. Firstly MWEB doesn't have as much traffic as the big ISPs and as such telkom, MTN and Vodacom would have to "subsidize" MWEB to use of their respective networks. Then who would end up paying for MWEB consumers, the big ISPs users, so MTN Telkom or Vodacom would charge you more.

Yes the big ISP's milk us dry, yet we the consumer keeps on supporting them. MWEBs trying to score some extra customers, lower their own costs at the expense of other companies and you all fell for it. Sure good will come of freeing the local loop, but MWEBs looking to score and they bias in myBB articles is not helping anyone.... The only one that could really make a difference is the government, or more competition, so either move to MWEB or Cell C, otherwise you have no right complaining. Better yet stop supporting anyone, but making the sacrifice of not trolling myBB is to much.

All companies are looking to score .. but Telkom's response about not adhering to the 'spirit of the internet' takes the bloody cake. I've been using the internet since the days of BBS's & 2400baud modems and Telkom's has NEVER acted in the 'spirit of the internet', on the contrary. With international bandwidth now much more affordable the question is why local bandwidth is so expensive. MWEB seems to be the only company not intent on milking the situation for every cent. And yes I know they're in it for the money, its just they happen to be the only one pushing for more openness and co-operation rather than not.

ow f**k you telkom. Mweb is just not doing what is in the best interest for your pockets!

Firstly MWEB doesn't have as much traffic as the big ISPs and as such telkom, MTN and Vodacom would have to "subsidize" MWEB to use of their respective networks.

Lol, right, if that's what it was about, perhaps you'd care to explain why it apparently would cost MTN/Vodacom more to route that traffic locally (by not all that much more than stringing some new cables inside one building), than to route that traffic internationally. If you believe their position, I have a bridge to sell you.

<snip>
But, surely part of Telkom and MTN's service that they provide to their customers, is that users from other networks, especially MWeb, can access the content hosted on Telkom and MTN infrastructure?

Is it unethical to tell the people who host on your network that other networks can see the hosted content, whilst at the same time charging other networks to view that content?

What you're forgetting is that MTN and Telkom's customers are already paying for the traffic on their respective networks. By charging people outside of the network to access the network they are effectively charging double for that bandwidth.

If you host your site in MTN's data centre and MTN is billing you for 10gigs a month, why then should traffic coming from Mweb's network be charged to access that site? MTN's customers have already paid for that bandwidth.

Telkom slates MWEB’s transit cut decision

Telkom says MWEB’s decision to unilaterally cut of transit links “is not in the spirit of the Internet community”

Telkom's prices = NOT in the spirit of internet users, like adsl line prices. What else can one expect from Telkom ? So please shut-up when other service providers do something worthwhile for internet users !!!! Seems like Telkom will NEVER change.

I've read every comment on this thread and I still haven't gotten over the "is not in the spirit of the Internet community" comment. Telkom definitely deserve a Best Retarded Quote in the 2010 ASS AWARDS.

Telkom are a bunch of greedy c*$%suckers who are starting to panic as they realise what MWEB have done to them.

"Not in the spirit of the internet community"? Are you fu#king with us?
Someone tries to do us some good, and you say it's not in the spirit of the internet community? What you meant is "its not in the spirit of Telkom Ltd."

“MWEB’s unilateral measure is not in the spirit of the Internet community,”

This nearly gave me a stroke.

Telscum has been taking unilateral decisions since forever. Who decided to slice the internet up into 3Gb chunks? Who decided to remove local uncapped? Who decided to triple charge me for internet access? What frakken spirit was this done in?

Frak you Telkom. You on your own cost this country's economy billions because you are frakken stupid. But one day you will become obsolete.

Please explain how it is possible for M-Web to provide uncapped access to its users whilst you (who basically owns and controls everything) cannot provide the same access to your users. Greed is an ugly thing, just below corruption.

The one thing that this is doing is making it very attractive to rather use Telkom Internet, at least that way you can get to all the good sites quickly. M-Web has abused their alliance with Multichoice for many years, "free" advertising on DSTV and as the other article says, M-Web will be used to distribute DSTV through peering relationships.

Although Telkom has a monopoly, at least Altech broke that. The REAL monopoly left behind is Multichoice. Using that to try forcing this issue makes even Telkom squeeky clean. Where in the modern world does it cost as much as we pay for the limited service we get from DSTV.

lol. Okay Mtn tried and got a beating, Telkom came to the rescue, got a beating. Who's next. Hihihi this internet stuff is fun.

...and when last has Telkom done anything in the spirit of the internet community? Do they even know what that means?

hehehehe

Ok this suck for local gaming
but it shows how Telkom was ripping people off
Remember Mweb has to pay for it's international bandwidth and it is still cheaper to take it out of the country and bring it back in
Hell how much was Telkom stealing from local providers for it to be cheaper to pay for the international traffic than to work with them directly

That won't be the case when the Telkom/MWeb link is broken, as it will be soon.

Although Telkom has a monopoly, at least Altech broke that. The REAL monopoly left behind is Multichoice.
Telkom still has a fixed line monopoly. They are supposed to have Neotel competing with them, but we all know how that turned out. Multichoice has TopTV competing with them.

Using that to try forcing this issue makes even Telkom squeeky clean.
Have you read any other posts in this thread? Telkom looks anything but squeaky clean.

Where in the modern world does it cost as much as we pay for the limited service we get from DSTV.
Where in the world is it cheaper to send data on 20 000 km round trip than it is to send it across a data centre floor?

Telkom working on something "mutually beneficial", lol sounds like they trying to set themselves up as heros.

Well Telkom, charging customers exhorbitant line rental costs and forcing me to have a voice line when I don't want one "is not in the spirit of the Internet community" either.

I'm backing MWEB 100%
Telkom are drug addicts and are addticed to "the love of money", thay can see not futher than robbing SA consumers and bussinesses blind.

+1000 to MWEB

Wait... what?

International peering is free - but it is not congested.

Local peering is not free - but it is congested.

Anybody care to explain this?
