So technician arrives to install a voice line as ordered. My elderly father opens the gate for him and then proceeds to tell the guy that we want adsl not a voice line. Technician says the order says a voice line. My father says no he wants adsl. So technician leaves to go, according to my father, enable adsl at the exchange.

I had expressly told my father that the technician must install a voice line. I told him I want to get adsl thereafter. He was obviously not paying attention.

My question is, how could the techie enable adsl on a line that has been dead for at least 5 years? Why did he not call me to clarify as his the order stated voice line installation.

So now I have to wait for a visit to be scheduled. I think I will have to take tie off from work to ensure that things don't go awry agai. Thing is, the techie arrived a day later than he was supposed to.

Frustration...

I stay in Cambridge and suffered the same problem since end October last year. After having been visited by at least 7 Technicians and most of them confirming that the problem was on the cable and the fault was passed to the cable guys still not solved. They just do not know how to trace high frequency RF noise. I gave in and went for this http://www.telkom.co.za/today/unlimited-broadband/.
A lot of patience is required dealing with them on the 10213 number but it was worth it. Just make sure you are close to one of their towers.
I get 80+ Mbps download and 4+ Mbps up with the external antenna of the router propped against the wall inside a room facing the tower 300 metres away.

Hmmmm.......
What equipment did Telkom supply, and how much did you have to pay for it?

Hi I have been having issues with my line for months, the speeds I am getting are ridiculous.
Last Result:
Download Speed: 75 kbps (9.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 612 kbps (76.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 14 ms

Not always the case but very often completly unusable I have a 10 Meg line by the way, have had technicians at my place and all say there is nothing wrong with my line but I am constantly getting really low down and up speeds and pathetic ping.

Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
WAN ADSL Link 22774 26089 0 6755 21282 00:18:01
LAN1 Link Down 28979 25982 0 23617 6687 --
LAN2 Link Down --
LAN3 Link Down --
LAN4 Link Down --
WLAN 145M 29175 25619 0 23840 6971 00:18:55

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 10239 kbps 1023 kbps
Line Attenuation 15.5 db 9.0 db
Noise Margin 18.1 db 9.1 db

My Attenuaton an margin are excellent I should not be having these issues, I have been working with telkom for months on this now and I am finished, I believe this is a problem with the accounts set up as I dont think it could be line as this has been tested numerous times, the majority of the time I sit with a down load speed of about 3 meg.

PLease Please Please help

My ADSL has been down for 10 days straight and today a tech came out and also struggled with some call centre.

Needless to say that I'm still without Internet.

I got a response from Telkom via their Facebook page. My query is still under investigation. I'll check back with them in a week to see whether they have managed to make any progress. Will be good for those who connect to Chiselhurst exchange, and also have noisy lines.

[Unfortunately it would not be practical for me to switch to LTE, but thank you for telling me about it, Joe_Moer]

On the Monday the 18th I requested that Telkom upgrade the existing ADSL line to 10Mbs and increase the cap to 100GB.
On Thursday the 21st we got an SMS saying Welcome to Telkom Internet. Nothing else just welcome.
Simultaneously the line went dead, the ADSL Router lost sync and there is no dial tone.

Accounts say that the line is active, that the rate is 10Mbs as requested and that I have an unrelated line fault.

Telkom have now issued a fault number and say I have to pay a callout fee and will not say when a technician will call, I just have to wait there for anything up to a week.

Am I supposed to take a week's leave and sit at home with no phone or internet waiting for him?

It would appear to me that they have done the software and the billing side of the upgrade but not plugged the cable in at the exchange.

Any suggestions of how to go forward from here?

Hi TelkomZA

In December I requested my line to be moved to my new premises (Ref: 133989326) it was scheduled to happen last week Wednesday, the technician did phone me late Wednesday saying he could not do my install because they were having a problem somewhere else with a underground cable (non-relating my install) and would do the install for me a day or two later.

Today I logged onto telkom and looked at my reference, and it appears that it has disappeared, the system doesn’t recognize it and I cant reschedule it either.

Sadly the Tech phoned from a private number so I cant phone him either.

PS I did apply for telkom fiber (as its available in my area) to my new premises as well via WebAfrica, as they offer a higher cap, I wouldn’t mind if that get installed before the ADSL does, in fact that would be preferred.

I'm waiting on Telkomza as well. This assia system is just messing up my line.

I have a "up to 4Mbps" Telkom ISP ADSL data connection. Yesterday (25th Jan), and again today, I 'm getting frequent disconnects from internet availability.

A reboot of my router usually, not always, sorts it out for an hour or so. Then my ADSL drops again.
Could this be related to the Assia system? I am connected via the Swellendam, WC exchange ... 028 514 ****

Okay so I finally got in touch with them ,via twitter and facebook, they phoned me in the morning and said a technician will phone me to install my fiber tomorrow, I was extremely great full and they even canceled my ADSL request for me, so the tech phoned me and said I need to sign a contract with Telkom els he cant help me as the fiber was requested trough WebAfrica , I have this on recording, the rep that then phoned me up and said there is nothing they can do.

This sounds like extortion, please telkomza when you get back let me know whats happening, I am now in a worse situation as the adsl was canceled.

Can someone in CT run a ping to igubu.saix.net and tell me what they get?

I have noticed that we get instead of our 7-9ms to CT servers, we now get a solid 25ms. Some traffic is even routed to JHB and then back to CT and we get 40-50ms. Not a a serious problem, but something is obviously not setup correctly.
I have tried 4 ISP's. same result.

Tracing route to igubu.saix.net [196.25.1.1]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms 192.168.88.1
2 * * * Request timed out.
3 25 ms 26 ms 24 ms cpt-rx2.ip.adsl.co.za [169.1.5.82]
4 24 ms 41 ms 23 ms cpt-net1.ip.adsl.co.za [169.1.5.128]
5 25 ms 24 ms 25 ms 41.164.52.40
6 25 ms 25 ms 25 ms wblv-ip-se-2-wan.telkom-ipnet.co.za [196.25.3.101]
7 25 ms 25 ms 25 ms 196.43.25.205
8 25 ms 24 ms 25 ms wblv-sr-1-fe-3-0-101.telkom-ipnet.co.za [196.43.3.2]

Trace complete.
