Thailand/Bangkok QA thread

If you eat at Thai restaurants and don't go binge drinking every night then 3000 Baht a day should be enough.

Eating seafood, steaks and western food and drinking dozens of cocktails and bottles of wine then that won't be enough.

Some days you will spend less, some days more.
Seafood....one of the first things we want to do is visit the Rawai Seafood Market. The SO loves seafood plus the Smart Bus takes you there which is awesome.

My days of binge drinking are gone. Can't stand a babalas!!!

Have anyone been?

I have tried getting prices for tours just to get an idea but the prices differed a lot from what I read. I have kind of resorted to checking the prices when I get there.
We booked our tours when we got there (we stayed near Patong beach). We spoke to a few of those "tour agents" and found a good price. As someone else said, never accept the first price (listed on the pamphlet or whatever). We paid at least half, if not more than half, of the listed price.

If you want I can send you the location of the lady who booked our tours. We liked her, she was a straight shooter and didn't "drag out" the negotiation process. We booked a James Bond island tour and the Phuket Fantasea tour with her.

I didn't go to the Rawai Seafood market, but I think you mentioned you will be in Old Phuket Town?

Try out Raya restaurant. It's excellent. SO found it while watching Youtube travel videos... The guy highly recommended it, and it did not disappoint. They have this crab dish that was amazing. Can't remember the prices but I don't think it was too bad.

Luckily I looked up this info recently. A friend of mine is in Thailand right now, so I sent it to him last week.

She is in the little blue kiosk. Her name is Jane.

I really appreciate this, thank you.

Yes should be more than enough if you don’t go on a big shopping spree.
With R20k you don’t really have to count pennies.
For tours on Phuket, get the hop on hop off bus. It takes you to all the main attractions on the island for about R80pp
As Norrad said, if you going to take a trip to another island off Phuket then you might want to check and negotiate pricing.
Never take the first price. Specially if you going as a family. Shop around.
Good advice to shop around, but keep in mind that lower price might mean a very overcrowded boat.

The idea is to kind of operate like a local. Honestly, I do not get the idea behind going to a foreign country to go on shopping sprees. It just seems like a waste of time and money. Luckily my wife feels the same. When we were in Bali we avoided this and doing touristy activities which made the experience must better. We did one day trip to a neighboring island but that was absolutely fantastic and I will do it again.

There's not much there that you can't get here. Name brand items only have a much larger variety of items. There are clothes (local brands) that are very cheap compared to SA, and really great quality. Specific T shirt shop in MBK on a corner, I think the 3rd floor. I'll know it when I'm there again in December

Guess I must make plan and take the SO there. Next year sometime. Canada first , hopefully in next month. Just the visas are taking forever, we are on week 10 of waiting already.

It is, but then you're doing it like it should be done. I also don't travel overseas to live like a hobo. I can do that here :p
True that. Then you must go to Varna, Bulgaria. Book into Melia Grand Hermitage on Level status (full board).

MBK pricing has become quite expensive lately with many prices being double what you pay at places like Pratunam. For deals on clothing you should head to Bobae market. Used to buy 90% of my clothing there. I enjoy MBK for phones and pirated stuff though and it will always be close to my heart as was roped into starring in an advert there where I got to stare at womens' asses all day

Haha you are correct. What I failed to mention, is that that specific shop in MBK also stocks t shirts that fit healthy Westerners as well LOL.

For sure, yes as Norrad mentioned again MBK has gotten more expensive but I can still buy 4 T shirts for R500 and last long AF.

Platinum mall is cheaper but it’s crazy and very busy in there. I still prefer MBK and then walk from MBK to Siam paragon and all the way to gourmet food market and then catch the train back home.
The thing about Thailand is that you can still buy clothes and textiles and electronics for a good price and good quality.
In SA if you buy and pay cheap you also get shyte.

Yeah, also, the long and the short of it, is that they have better quality fakes than we can ever hope to have

Headed down to JJ to check out the pets section today to see if I could find something interesting for the lake. Found loads of meerkats and raccoons for sale at one stall. I've always wanted a raccoon for a pet so was extremely tempted to buy one  I would probably have gotten one if I had the 20K Baht on me at the time.

Also found some baby alligators which would help stop people fishing in my lake while I'm away. Wonder what my neighbors would think if I put a few in there :whistling:

Tried to get a skeef pic by pretending to make a call on my phone, but the seller got all abrasive. They are super strict about the no pictures policy in that section of the market.

It should be cheaper at Rawai, we had a sunset dinner in the parking lot next to the beach, they had a lot of food stalls and it was cheap.

Seeing that you are in the area and if you want to buy fake clothes at the cheapest prices then go to these shops, no need to haggle prices here, they give best price first up: https://goo.gl/maps/zZbbH5Etro7kq6WK8

Pity. We spent many an hour in MBK
