The Bafana Bafana Thread

No it was only 1 day of friendlies. The next friendly should be in February but Pitso wants a game in December. Football teams get at least 2 days rest between matches it isn't baseball.

Unconfirmed reports are saying that Bafana will play Sweden on 19 January at CTS. I will post an update when I have more info.

This is the best source which I can find so far, it's google translated, so bare with it:

Men: To South Africa in January
South Africa becomes the target for the 2011 January tour with the national team. On site waiting for meetings with South Africa (19 / 1) and Mozambique (22 / 1).

Johan Dahlin, Daniel Larsson and Guillermo Molins, three MFF: are receiving a new janurariresa.
On January 14 the team travels to South Africa. The match against South Africa will be played in Cape Town while Nelspruit is matchort for the meeting with Mozambique. The team is back home in Sweden on 24 January.

In January the matches are professionals on the continent are not available but, as usual, be the player with a Scandinavian resident that the coach could choose from. However, it has been impossible to dislodge the Swedes in the FCK and Rosenborg. In the 21-man squad which Hamrén taken out are nine potential newcomers.

- Something that is positive is that there are very many offensive players competing. There are more people who stand and bang on the door, said Hamrén when he announced the squad on Tuesday.

The squad are several players who have shown up your feet, not only in the Championship this year but also in the under-21 national team's European Championship qualifier. One of those was a surprising statement on Tuesday morning was AIK defenseman Niklas Backman:

Niklas Backman, here in training with the under-21 national team. - It came as a shock, "you are the national team". It was a good morning, a good Christmas present, "said Niklas whose development has been steadily upward curve in recent seasons.

- It has felt good the whole way, from Division 1 with Skiljebo to the Premier League last year with Väsby and even if we did not make a smash season with the team (AIK) for years so it felt good for themselves, "said Backman, who are nevertheless aware that there is an additional step to reach the "real" team.

- Yes, there are a few steps away we are, but it's fun just to be here with and get a chance to prove themselves.

- It's just what's so great about January tour, there is a chance to get to know these players, complementing Eric Hamrén which will also bring the U21's leadership troika, coach s Tommy Soderberg and Håkan Ericson as well as goalkeeper coach Mats Svensson trip to South Africa.

It will be Sweden's first ever international match against Mozambique on Saturday, 22 January in Nelspruit. Mozambique is ranked 98 in the world and relatively unknown to us Swedes. They have recently played 0-0 against Libya and defeated Swaziland 2-1.
The more famous are South Africa (ranked 50 in the world) as Sweden previously met twice, in Pretoria in 1999 where we lost with 0-1 and 2001 in Solna, where Sweden won 3-0. South Africa has lost against the U.S. by 0-1 and drew 0-0 against Sierra Leone next. Sweden launches tour against South Africa in Cape Town Wednesday, January 19th.

While FIFA still has the Bafana vs Sweden match listed, nothing has been said by SAFA. They have however announced the team's February friendly, it looks like they will be playing Burkina Faso on 8 Februay, in SA. The venue is still to be decided, and the match is yet to be finilised, but it looks like this will be the team's next match:

Johannesburg - Bafana Bafana are trying to secure a friendly with Burkina Faso on February 8 as preparation for their African Nations Cup qualifier against champions Egypt.

The Pharaohs will be the first major test in Pitso Mosimane's 2011 schedule and after failing to secure a North African team ahead of the crucial March date, the South African Football Association began talks with the Burkinabe.

SAFA CEO Leslie Sedibe, whose contract comes to an end on January 6, revealed the international friendly was on the verge of being finalised.

"The deal is 95 percent done to play the Burkinabe," he said.

"Initially, our coach Pitso Mosimane wanted to play a match against one of the top North African teams like Morocco, Tunisia or Algeria but we could not conclude a deal with either team after they withdrew. We could not try Egypt because they are in the same group with us for the 2012 African Cup of Nations qualifiers.

"We hope to finalise the negotiations with Burkina Faso in a few days' time, I'm working closely with Pitso on this matter.

"As for the venue for the match, we are still in discussion with various municipalities to come on board as partners to host Bafana Bafana."

Sedibe made it clear that Bafana will play the clash at a World Cup venue and hinted it would not be in the familiar surrounds of Soccer City and Moses Mabhida Stadium.

"We have made a commitment as the SAFA leadership after the World Cup in July that we will be taking our matches to the people to say a big thank you to South Africans for embracing Bafana Bafana during the World Cup," he said.

"In addition, we made it clear that Bafana Bafana will use the World Cup match venues because we don't want them to become white elephants."

News24

New rankings are in, and Bafana is up to 47 in the world and 8 in Africa.

Bafana Bafana have continued their steady climb up the Fifa World Rankings and are positioned at number 47 in the latest list released on Wednesday.

The side has also risen to eighth place in the CAF rankings, and could score major points with a win over Burkina Faso in their friendly international on February 9 as the Burkinabe have moved into fifth-place on the continent and number 41 in the world.

The move up the table has come at the right time for coach Pitso Mosimane with the draw for the 2014 World Cup qualifiers to be made in July. Bafana are less likely to meet a continental powerhouse if they are ranked among Africa’s elite.

Egypt have dropped 23 places in the world ranks and have been overtaken by Ghana as Africa’s top-rated side, followed by Ivory Coast. The Egyptians are third, with Nigeria in fourth and Burkina Faso fifth.

The global ranking is still headed by world champions Spain, followed by Netherlands, Germany, Brazil and Argentina.

Yip, game starts at 8.35. Tickets cost between R50 and R100, and are available from Shoprite and Checkers money market counters, and Computicket.

Late squad change:

|Ajax Cape Town striker Thembinkosi ‘Terror’ Fanteni has received a late call-up to the Bafana Bafana squad to replace Kermit Erasmus, who has upper respiratory tract infection.

Fanteni has been doing well since re-joining Ajax Cape Town from Orlando Pirates at the beginning of the season. The 26-year-old striker spent two seasons with Maccabi Haifa in Israel and joined Orlando Pirates at the beginning of the 2009/10 season with the hope of increasing his chances of playing at the World Cup.

But after a disappointing season at Pirates, Fanteni was dropped from the national squad that went to Brazil for a camp. He last played for Bafana in a 2-0 win over New Zealand during the 2009 Fifa Confederations Cup.

Fanteni will now join the rest of the national team for the international friendly against Kenya in Rustenburg.
