Hehe, ya, I get it. Something like Arsene Wenger or Mourinho would say. Just saying it is using it as an excuse already I guess.

Wayne Rooney, Rio Ferdinand and Owen Hargreaves will form part of a far stronger Manchester United squad when the Red Devils visit these shores in July to contest the Vodacom Challenge for the second time in three years.

United's Scottish manager Sir Alex Ferguson was in Johannesburg on Tuesday to promote this year's challenge, and was in good humour as he described England's failure to qualify for this year's European Championships as "a big blow to Scotland!"

Well, England's disgrace is also to South African fans' benefit as it means all United's England internationals will be here instead of in Austria and Switzerland.

Indeed, with only five of United's squad away at Euro 2008, Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs face a much tougher task this time than they did in 2006, when Chiefs walked away with the kudu horn.

Back then, 14 of United's first team squad were absent because of the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

Even United's South American duo of Carlos Tevez and Anderson could make the trip to South Africa, depending on Brazil and Argentina's plans following a June 20 friendly between the two nations.

"I am not sure of their (Brazil and Argentina's) plans. But if they are only playing that friendly, then they will come," said Ferguson.

Pre-season visits to South Africa have proved useful for United in the past. Following their previous two visits to South Africa, in 1993 and 2006, the Red Devils have gone on to win the English league title.

"I hope it will be a good omen again," smiled Ferguson.

United's chances of winning this season's title are, meanwhile, looking slimmer, after Arsenal opened up a five point gap over their rivals on Monday night. Ferguson, however, was unmoved: "There's still a long way to go... it will go down to the wire."

United and Arsenal also meet this weekend in an FA Cup fifth round tie. But Ferguson played down the rivalry. "Any game with Arsenal in the FA Cup should be awesome" he said.

"We have played Arsenal so many times over the years that it is really just another game for us. We won't be fazed by our bad result last Sunday (United lost 2-1 at Old Trafford to local rivals Man City)."

Adebayor praise for Ronaldo

Emmanuel Adebayor has spoken of his admiration for golden boot rival Cristiano Ronaldo ahead of Saturday's FA Cup clash with Manchester United.

Adebayor and Ronaldo are neck-and-neck at the top of the Premier League goalscoring charts on 19 goals each, but the Togo star admits it would be a great feat to eclipse the United sensation.

"He is a player I like to watch," Adebayor told the club's official website.

"He has a lot of quality and watching him is like watching something else, it is like playing on the PlayStation sometimes.

"He is an amazing footballer and I show him a lot of respect for what he has done this season. There are not a lot of players, especially midfielders who can achieve what he has achieved."

Delighted

"The Golden Boot is something I want to do as a footballer but the most important thing is that I want to achieve something as a team.

"At the end of the day, if I win the Golden Boot and the team does not win anything, I cannot see me enjoying myself - it would be better to win the title."

The 23-year-old striker picked up the Arsenal fans player of the month award for January, an accolade he was delighted with.

"The Arsenal fans voted me as player of the month and I'm very happy and pleased about that because it means a lot of people believe in you," he said.

"I'm pleased and I want to achieve a lot in my career. That is why I'm here and that is what I'm fighting for."

I have renewed hope in Nani and Anderson as well.

I'd agree with that lineup, then on the bench- Saha, Scholes, Giggs and Hargreaves. Not bad if you ask me.
 
no nani played well no doubt but anderson just played so well

he is going to be a united legend, just needs to learn to shoot or take more shots

Nani is playing exactly like how Ronaldo started his career at United. So give the guy time and he will definately be something. Anderson no doubt to me is already proving what he is capable of, just needs to get one goal to start the engines.

I just dont get why you are the only person i know of that doesnt think Anderson is so damn good ? he took on Scholes responsibility in midfield and did it so well that Scholes was forgotten. since Scholes returned, we won 4 out of 9 points (epl)
 
yea no doubt scholes is hurting united

yes he has been a good servant but should we lose trophies because of it?

This is the first game I have seen him perform decently. Trust me, he was far from amazing. Arsenal played like a school team and were never a threat at all.

I agree he should take Scholesy place, as that is why we bought people like him and Hargreaves, but I am yet to be convinced of his quality.

I'd say anything from a 0-0 draw is a good result to bring back to Trafford.

Sir Alex Ferguson insists he has no problems axing his FA Cup heroes against Lyon tonight.

The Manchester United manager is only without Gary Neville and Mikael Silvestre ahead of the first leg of their crucial Champions League last-16 clash and he's confident the club have a strong enough squad to challenge for honours on multiple fronts.

However with a fit pool of 22 players to choose from, Ferguson faces a selection dilemma whether to keep faith with the backbone of the side which beat Arsenal 4-0 at the weekend or bring back his rested stars.

Darren Fletcher, Nani and Michael Carrick all impressed during the FA Cup triumph at Old Trafford but they could make way for Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Owen Hargreaves in the starting XI.

This issue is something that only pleases Ferguson, who is seeking only his second Champions League crown.

"Last season we didn't have the resources to get through to the second leg of the semi-final against Milan in Italy," he said in the Manchester Evening News.

"If we'd had better resources we'd have got through. But we have a stronger squad and a more complete squad this season. The secret is keeping them all fit.

"Today I am lucky I have 22 players here and only Gary and Silvestre not here. It is a fantastic position to be in at this time of the season. If we can keep that it will definitely without question give us a chance.

"The midfield area is where I have the best options. On Saturday we brought a couple of fresh players in, in Fletcher and Carrick, and they were outstanding.

"You could say I have selection headaches. But when you are picking a team at the level we are at I don't think you look upon that as a hindrance to achieving the result."

As Ferguson chase European glory and a domestic double, Ferguson admits rotating his squad will be part and parcel of achieving success.

"The expectation at our club is that when you are in a tournament you have to do your best. Every game is so important and hopefully we can manage the three," he added.

Lyon just sneaked through the Champions League group stage after thrashing Rangers at Ibrox in their final game and Ferguson is in no doubt of the stiff challenge that awaits.

He said: "Lyon look like they will win the championship again to make it seven times in a row and that is a great achievement.

"It is a terrific atmosphere in their stadium and it will be packed.

"It is going to be a hard game. But this tie won't be decided tonight it will be decided at Old Trafford, so that will give us a big chance."

I would leave in Nani and Anderson at the expense of Giggs and Scholes. But, who knows, the latter certainly have the experience. As long as this is the last season in which they start every game.
