From the Dev-Team:

We’d like to update you on what we’ve been doing for the last week or so and bring you up to speed with a couple of work-streams.

Things are certainly hotting up in the DevTeam with most of our members being able to obtain 3G iPhones, which means a distributed workload and lots of fun for our team-members.

A week ago we posted a screenshot of an iPhone 3G being downgraded to an earlier firmware, we are able to execute code on the baseband in order to circumvent a security check that then allows us to flash the baseband to an earlier version, of course this isn’t a 3G unlock (as yet) but was a way to demonstrate the fact that we had extra control of the baseband. With all this upgrading and downgrading we were worried about bricks, so we’ve developed a method to dump the WiFi tables and the seczones so that a backup copy can be made, we were happy about this as it means now that we can modify without sweating, a successful recovery can be made at any point, with this out of the way, changing our underwear every 5 minutes isn’t necessary, so we are making really good progress towards the goal of a software based iPhone 3G unlock, we are working hard on it with no estimates of if and when it will be completed, we’ll update you as soon as we know anything else so stay tuned and watch this space.

It's a good phone but you can always sell the HTC when the iPhone arrives, you don't have to be stuck with it.

Thats a GOOOD questions. No-one really knows when Vodacom is going to release the iPhone. Some say August, others September, most say October. I mean VC hasnt even published newspaper ads, tv ads etc etc.

You could get one through Rendier or other guys who will be supplying it, although there is no software unlock, there will be one available very soon. So I wouldnt worry about the unlock thing.

You can get one from R6000 to R8000 - so shop around.

Apple Store on iPhone3G.co.za coming soon.

Anyone have any concrete updates on the Vodacom release? Some of the stores seem pretty adamant that they're getting it in the second week of August.

HTC Diamond is definitely better than the iphone, technology wise. IPhone is more a typical fashion statement/coolness factor than "superior tech" . HTC uses Windows Mobile as it's OS, that itself is a pretty "advanced" OS in terms of applications and support you get on it. IPhone uses pretty much a MAC/Apple specific OS...i continuously read about all the issues with unlocking, customizing and "homebrewing" people have with Iphones......where i could on my last Imate get even DOS [and the old DOS games] up and running without a problem ;).

You will have to ask yourself : Are you after the "geek" factor, then go HTC, if you're after the "cool" factor, go IPhone.

This speaks for itself :

So yea, iphone probably got a great user interface, but for example, you can't use it as a modem to your laptop....i don't even know what hoops you need to jump through to actually sync it with a -windows- PC ....

OK....

So, I just lost R250 - but saved an iPhone 3G. Picked up my iPhone 3G today, and got a yessim sim adapter. According to the website, it's garunteed to work with the iPhone 3G.
Looks easy enough, it's a tiny thin adapter you gotta stick onto your simcard. Do that, stick it into the iPhone 3G and get a "no sim" message.

Urg. Maybe I did something wrong. Try to eject the simcard - oh ****. The simcard is stuck in the phone. Yes. The simadapter makes it too thick, and the whole thing got stuck in the phone. A quick search on the net revealed the only way to get it out is to open the iPhone. It took me a short while - but I got the sim adapter out and my iPhone is back together and working perfectly (although still sim-locked).

I think I will wait for a software unlock and just write off the R250 for the yessim.

I don't recommend sim-adapters in the iPhone 3G. The sim card tray is just too shallow as is the space it slides into. Add to that, it didn't work - and you have a bad combination.

Maybe Rendier could shed some light on the whole Sim unlock process? As I believe he is using a Yessim with his iPhone pretty successfully.
At this stage I am considering going for either a Yessim or StealthSim SE.
Is there anyone who can supply either of these locally?

Thanks broken. This wouldn't happen to be the one you removed by disassembling your phone would it? :p
I would actually like to give one a shot if you can provide?

hehe I dont have lots of money, it just felt good saying it :p
Anyways il be streight with you guys about the phone. Maybe Rendier is even right and I just lost R5500.
But my life motto is :
Take risks: if you win, you will be happy; if you lose, you will be wise.

So what is the verdict?

LOL
