i think someone needs to test this statement buy trying it themselves and then report back to the forum ill buy that guy a case of beer

I tried to activate a freshly restored 2.1 iPhone with my Vodacom sim, no luck. AT&T sim could activate but requires a contract of course.

Remember I'm just passing on what Chris told us. And he would know more than anyone at a Vodashop, since he is the executive that brought the iPhone to SA ;)

Vodacom might fix a phone if you pay them too - but they will not honour warranties on grey imports. Obviously a grey is a grey, whether it works or not.

He told us that any iPhone, 3G or 2G, would work in SA if you synced it here using iTunes 8, up to the latest version of the software.

Vodacom do not fix Iphones. If it is in warranty, there is a 48 hour swap out process - they are NOT allowed to repair them. If out of warranty, you can purchase a refurb at a reduced cost. NO REPAIRS are allowed at any vodacare/vodacom outlet. Just read the email - sorry guys:(

Hmmm... maybe Chris was referring to only out-of-contract retail phones then.

Looking for it as we speak...

How about trying it without a sim?

Don't bother, I can confirm that this rumor is false, I tried once again with the Vodacom sim, no sim, AT&T sim and nothing. I was able to get my phone partially activated using the AT&T sim but I need a US debit card for iTunes to bill it and complete the activation, this will cost over $50 and my iPhone will still be AT&T locked so not really worth it.

Quick question everyone. I am not buying an iPhone just yet, but my brother is getting one. Our local Vodashop says its only being launched to the public on Sunday....? What the heck? I thought it was launched to the public on Friday?! Im in Bloem by the way.

Got my 3G iPhone yesterday & so happy with it!! :)

This is the first phone that I can actually surf the web on (Safari is fast!) and the quality of the music just great....and that was all I wanted for my next phone.

*The call quality is really good, I'm very impressed with it.

so please correct me if I'm wrong but we're being charged MORE than other countries for a less functional product?

There's a rumor that Vodacom might still introduce it, they just need enough iPhone users to make it worthwhile I suppose.

Yeah. My whole I am not buying the iPhone lasted a day.

I am now the proud and very happy owner of an iPhone 16Gb Black.

In the vodashop, some chick was buying an HTC Touch Diamond. It cost her more than my iPhone cost me...so the iPhone isn't THAT expensive! :)

I love it though.
