What is wrong with the iStore? Every app that I want to download is not available in SA. Sure there are some apps, but not the great ones. No Google Mobile App, and not any of the top 20 apps I've found around the net...

Anyone find a workaround for this?

Yeah, and the funny part is after that incident he never posted here again... but that is always the case... people insult you and accuse you of things then when you prove them wrong they disappear. Go figure.

ha ha ha ha you guys are so right im laughing my ass off, hey rendier like i said in my pm to you dont say i havent posted here again go and read up first, i have never insulted you all i said was id rather buy from igear than from some guy on a forum, geez i use this forum for information not friggin fighting. you got a problem with me go seek anger management because quite frankly im not interested on slinging mud.

oh and another thing i earn a friggin good salary so if i paid too much for my iphone then so be it, it was my choice. it never hurt me financially i can go buy anothe one

We had a long chat with Chris Ross, sales manager for Vodacom, this afternoon during the recording of episode 31 of ZA Tech Show.

I just wanted to drop by and share some vital info: Chris has confirmed that ANY iPhone from ANYWHERE will now work in South Africa. All you have to do is sync it up to the latest version of the software. You can also use ANY iTunes account with it (American, UK, whatever). And obviously it will work on any network in SA - Vodacom, MTN, Cell C or Virgin.

Catch: the phone will obviously still be a grey product. You will not receive support or backup for it in SA. Don't go crying to Vodacom or Apple IMC if it breaks.

Good news for importers and owners of first gen iPhones :)

Episode 31 will be available from midday, Monday, 29 September. Check it out if you want the official line on the iPhone, from the horse's mouth. www.zatech.co.za

I think this is once again a case of this one says this and that one says that. I phoned three Vodacom shops and asked if they are able to repair the overseas one and all of them said yes.

BUT...

If they indeed don't then it's still no problem as Apple USA will fix it three times faster than Vodacom. My Samsung was at Vodacom for 6 weeks. My one DOA iPhone was at Apple for a week and back in my hands the next week.

By the way, thanks for the info SimonDingle.

Does the unlock apply to the 3G or old iPhone?

I tried this and it never worked, people suggesting this seem to be misinformed. If your iPhone is a US Model only AT&T can unlock it because they own it.

Edit:
But I suggest you give it a shot maybe I was wrong, I tried this with the iPhone2G.
He may be referring to any officially activated iphone can now work in SA.

Hey,

I've put my MTN SIM into my new 3G iPhone and it works fine!

Phone and 3G work without issues.... :)

Ledge
Doesn't this void part of the Vodacom warranty? Assuming they will know that u put an MTN sim in...

Thanks for giving us a chance/choice to pre buy the Iphone , and it was a case of supply and demand, nobody was forced to buy. Good thinking

No problem bud. Im use to people criticizing but when accusing me of ripping ppl off... now that gets to me.

I am bringing in the G1 Android (Google phone) as soon as they launch so if any trendsetters are interested, send me a PM and as soon as I have more details I will let you know.

(Almost like a pre-order but over here you won't have to wait three months for the price announcement :)... )

Remember I'm just passing on what Chris told us. And he would know more than anyone at a Vodashop, since he is the executive that brought the iPhone to SA ;)

Vodacom might fix a phone if you pay them too - but they will not honour warranties on grey imports. Obviously a grey is a grey, whether it works or not.

He told us that any iPhone, 3G or 2G, would work in SA if you synced it here using iTunes 8, up to the latest version of the software.

Any officially activated iPhone, don't think those with "unofficially" activated iphones count.

Thanks for the info...

That is why I said to fix you can use Vodacom, for warranty, Apple USA.

And if you can indeed software unlock the 3G on itunes here then my hat goes off to Vodacom. Well done in that department.

Thanks again for the info and sorry bout earlier... was late and didn't have much sleep.
