The Official 3G Iphone Thread

I just saw the iPhone 3G advert from Vodacom, not sure if it's just an apple stock commercial branded by Vodacom in the end but they totally skipped the iPod player feature which is the best part of the phone lol, not impressed.

I had a look at the iPhone3G yesterday at the Apple store in Clearwater and the only thing I am a little worried about is the virtual keyboard.

So my question is this to the guys that bought it recently. How much of a adaption did it require for you to get use to virtual keys and typing on the phone.

Secondly the spacing of the keys felt a bit crowded. Can you change it to landscape view (i.e. turn it 90 degrees) and let the keys be spaced out a bit more that way?

Apparently the keyboard works best when you type using your thumbs but for me I'm still stuck at 10 words a minute :o

...still faster than my previous phone so I'm not complaining.

Took about 30mins to adapt to the keys... as for it being rotated to landscape, yes.. in some applications, not in others.

When I got mine a year ago I struggled for a week or two. Now it's 10 times faster than using the old press 1 three times to get to C.

It is weird at first but you will be loving it soon. just use one thumb... two thumbs are a waste.

Went to the Apple store in Sandton square/city (confused which one is which) and asked about 3G Iphone, was told they dont have stock now as it's licensed to Vodacom, but cash price R6600 8G and R7200 16G.

There are two speakers at the bottom of the phone, right? Only one is working one mine. According to the warranty doc, they'll issue me with a refurbished unit.

Here's hoping they can swop it out for a new one.

How do I make sure all my data is off the phone should I have to return it? Is there some key combo to instantly wipe all person data etc off the phone?

One is a speaker, other is a microphone...

If the volume is not working for you, jailbreak your phone and download a little app from Cydia called Volume Boost.

Ha ha ha shame you poor man you have never heard of predictive text?!?! I bet I could type a message quicker with predictive text than you on your virtual keyboard.... and further I bet I could do it without looking at my keys.... can you?

No probably not... But he's doing it on the iPhone.

Why are you getting so smug? Jelousy make you nasty? I've never gotten this whole my phone is better than yours.

Oh sorry. Next time I will just read a post about needing to press a key three times to get a C, like we had to 5 or more years ago, and how clever the iPhone is cos you don't need to do this, then I won't comment or question the reality of having a touch screen with a keyboard on it and trying to use it without looking at it!! OK? Will that be better.... I'll just say "+1"

(PS now that is immense sarcasm so you can accuse me of that now.)

And if you bothered reading all the iPhone posts you will note that I already discussed why I do this quite extensively before.... but to recap, I feel it is important to have a balance when commenting on a product. If I feel something needs to be questioned, I'll do it. And if I come across as smug when doing so, then so be it. It is not against forum rules. Is it? If the owners of the phone were able to convince me that I am wrong then good for them, but so far I have not had to swallow my words.

T9!??

Aarrgh! what a nightmare, thank goodness I don't have have to put up with that. iPhone's predictive text is much better IMHO.

Please one of you iPhone guys tell me about using the virtual keyboard without looking at the keys.... and yes the need does arise from time to time!

have you ever considered that Rendier might be typing most of his sms's in Afrikaans? as you probably know most cellphones don't have T9 dictionaries for Afrikaans. (I've never seen one!)

Well why don't we all stop assuming and ask him, shall we? And you can teach your phone.....

I agree I don't like virtual keyboards for this reason, but the iPhone was never meant to compete with the blackberry.

OK, might be true, because I haven't owned all the phones out there, but the only phone I had which could "learn" afrikaans was my Motorola Razr V3. cool phone but crap OS.
