I recently discovered the joy of installing from a USB Flash. I used UNetbootin (http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/).

Worked great.

From zero operating system to installed in under 12 minutes ! !

Just thought I'd share that with anyone who is considering trying Ubuntu (running a Live distribution off the flash was also lightning fast: was as if it was already installed!), or anyone that is struggling with a dodgy CD-ROM (e.g. on old notebooks, etc).

Making the flash bootable was the most time-consuming part (a few minutes) ! !

I tried following http://www.ubuntugeek.com/how-to-install-ubuntu-linux-from-usb-stick.html, but couldn't get Ubuntu to make my 1Gb flashdrive bootable. I tried parted, fdisk and cfdisk, all refusing to set the bootable flag.

Note: I'd like to install the Hardy AMD64 "Alternate CD" distro from USB, since it was so incredibly slow from CD - the process seems to hang at one point, which various users have said is possibly just some network-related issue in the installation that could take 4 hours! I'm curious whether installing from a USB flashdrive will go faster

USB should go faster. a 52x CD ROM can write at 7200KBps and ends up reading at around 6-7MBps (of course it differs between computers). I can read from my flash drive at speeds of 15MBps upwards to almost 45MBps (it thus depends on its maximum speed and the speed at which your hdd can write).
