Ubuntu Natty 11.04 Release

Thanks mod, think you have just re-introduced me to kde. It's so much better than when I last used it. I'm just having issues now with it coming to a grinding halt when I try to do to much at once, I think that is Ubuntu though. Think its time to migrate to a mature kde distro: OpenSuse? Fedora?
 
Great to hear, Tim.

Anyway, if you prefer debs to RPMs, OpenSuse would not be an option. However, since OpenSuse heavily contributes to the KDE project itself, one could think their distro should outshine a somewhat cruder Kubuntu.

I also find the lack of customization bothersome. They will need to address this very, very fast otherwise more power users will leave them for other distros and they will be stuck with a useless community.

You are also stuck with what you have in terms of look, you cannot change much, move the top panel or do anything to it (this is what I noticed on my very first boot) and so far I have not found a way to change the ridiculous size of the icons in the "Unity Launcher" or anywhere else.

For the time being I'm sticking with Ubuntu on the wife's PC (Ubuntu ONE being a factor), I'm having serious doubts whether I should put this on the daughters PC...

I might just try Kubuntu again, but I had a horrible time with it a couple of years back and never touched it again. Might just end up with Xubuntu or whatever it is called, it's just that I do not like XFCE very much.

Indeed. This is actually the first time it's happened to me. Quickly did a md5sum and it's not the same, so will download it again tonight. (OrbitDownload and its multiple connections can go suck it).

Busy upgrading from a fresh 10.10 (I found a 10.10 dvd) so will know tomorrow morning if it's worked.

I can't stand not being able to right click on something and get a menu. However if you want to change the launcher icon sizes, you can do that through the Compiz Settings Manager (advanced ccsm) - there is a unity launcher plugin there somewhere.
 
I installed 11.04 last night, and so far I think unity is fantastic- this is definitely the way forward.

I dont really understand all this talk of switching to kde now, if you dont like unity, just revert to gnome classic desktop- its a 2 second process.

I swear, the last command I typed when I walked out the office on Friday was "sudo apt-get install kubuntu-full.

Was a 1.8GB dl so havent checked it out yet.
 
Okay then.... unity is kind of like the jump we experienced from XP to Vista/7 ..... it's quite.... different. Not sure how much I like it either. But will see if I can get used to it.

I know I can go back to Gnome 2; it's just the fact that I had expectations to be running a great new de and I was disappointed. However, good did come from it because I probably wouldn't have tried kde out again otherwise.

The problem is, Canonical DO NOT want Gnome 2 to be the default.
 
Hmm.... Teamspeak doesn't show up in my "system tray" anymore after loading up Unity :grrr:

froot, explore adding your app to the unity whitelist. I read something about this on ubuntuforums yesterday. and still, that's bad to think your favourite app is "blacklisted" :) seems like they decide, not you. i hope they change it soon.
 
Haven't been able to get the whitelist script for unity to work. Will try when my adsl works again (stupid techies borking our exchange).

Note regarding unity and Xinerama (nvidia dual screen): it took me 2 restarts before it worked.

Another note: if I try to access the ttyl consoles (ctrl + alt + F1-F6) I get a black screen with a pink line at the top and then my pc hangs. Anyone else had this?

A known bug affecting all nvidia-current as of natty (high priority on launchpad), perhaps. Clash of nvidia binary build and the newest xorg. Upstream bug reported and nvidia engineers are aware of that already.

Funny video behaviour occurs also on KDE (not KDE fault) with nvidia cards - when trying to resize any terminal window the rendering of the entire screen halts.

Workaround - disable desktop effects, or use yakuake or use 173 version of the drivers.

OK, so some feedback on the Unity for my netbook, I'm getting use to it and I rather like it. I do have my doubts about ever using it for my work dev box though.

One new feature with the bluetooth app is that when you setup your phone, it will check if it supports DUN and prompt you if you want DUN support for the device. This is rather nice considering that I need DUN a few weeks back and had to go old school route for my B2100. With 10.x network-manager would only identify DUN on limited devices like my wifes phone but not mine.

As you can see from this and previous threads I'm rather impressed, then again very few distros have managed to run on my junk Aspire One without wanting me to smash it against the wall out of pure frustration.

Oh, My World ;) you are absolutely right. I am riding Kubuntu desktop for 2 days now and it really rocks. Highly recommended. It is so cool that I even ignore this nvidia bug on terminal resizing.

I used Ubuntu/Gnome for years in a row, but now I think KDE is right for me.

It's not a case of that your app is blacklisted, it's just that the system tray works diferantly now, and the prefferred way is to use app inidicators, however if your app doesnt support app indicators then you can white list your app so it will work again.

To white list an app,
1) install dconf editor via the software centre,
2) ALT F2 run dconf-editor
3) Open the Display / Unity then Panel
4) Edit the whitelist field and add your app there.
5) click elsewhere to save it and the close dconf-editor
6) login again and start your app

Hopefully in future apps will support app indicators..
