Uncapped ADSL acceptable use policies compared

Yeah, that's right. It's all BS and it doesn't exist. You heard nothing from me. ;) These are not the droids you are looking for. gnite.

Oh come on - can't you see how stupid you're being? Talking about this amazing deal that makes everyone else's look lame, but you can't actually say what it is? So yes. It's obviously BS, and can't exist, else you'd just tell us what it is. What do you do for an encore? Sell tickets to see the Loch Ness Monster?

haha, you think I actually give a crap what you think? Sorry. no dice.

I go back to my original point, when all these face uncapped accounts came along I went to my favourite ISP and told them what I want. They made a deal with me. I'm happy. Anybody else's problems are not mine. I saw what was going to happen with Mweb from day one. I was right turns out. If you want an account like this one, you need to go and talk to your ISP. If they won't deal with you, then find an ISP that will.

I know you don't give a crap what I think, but it's pretty clear you just made up this amazing account - R999 for uncapped unshaped uncontended is obviously BS. I looked at OpenWeb's site - they don't sell an account like that at ANY price. And don't even try and say they created a special account at a GIGANTIC discount just for you, cos... come on. Would you believe that if anyone else said it? Ha.

It doesn't exist. End of story.

And btw, Mweb accounts are good, and you don't have to make any special deals or shill constantly for them to get good service.

I thought you said it doesn't exist, end of story? :D

Well I'm hoping he'll say you misunderstood what you're getting, tell me what you ACTUALLY have, then I can judge myself it's a good deal, with some actual info instead of the evasive crap you're spewing. What you describe doesn't exist anywhere in the world, maybe he has an unlisted or test account that's good. Emails are cheap, so what the hell.

At an educated guess I'll say you have an Altech Gold at 20% discount. Dude @ work tried that, and saw no improvement over Mweb for normal browsing/leeching habits.

Well, in the first place you completely misunderstood what I described. I never said it was completely uncontended or completely unshaped... those were your words. I only said they were less so, than the fake uncapped accounts. TBH I don't know on which backbone it runs. I just told Mr. Beep what I wanted and he cobbled it together for me. I dunno if it even exists on his books. He only did it as a favour to me, and I'm not even supposed to be talking about it because he certainly won't be doing it for anyone else.

Again, my point is... subscribers don't have to settle for crap. Pay a bit more and get better service.

I was upset when these fake uncapped account came along and I blame Mweb. We were all waiting for the proper uncapped accounts to reduce in price. And what does Mweb do? They introduce a fake uncapped account and short circuit all our plans of waiting for a cheaper better uncapped account. One that is truly uncapped.

Actually, your words...

My uncapped account is NOT contended or shaped and has no draconian FUP.

No other way to interpret that, you're just trying to backpedal. Hell, you even used caps to emphasise it was "NOT contended".

I dunno if it even exists on his books. He only did it as a favour to me, and I'm not even supposed to be talking about it because he certainly won't be doing it for anyone else.

Well now that it's out in the open, hopefully at least he'll say what the account is. I'm not here to fight, I actually want to know what's out there to make sure I'm getting the best account for my money! Isn't this what this forum is about? Users helping each other?

What "proper uncapped accounts" were around for consumers before Mweb? Back then the consumer ones were were after-hours only, or 256kbit during the day, or rolling windows. Mweb's policies were a breath of fresh air in the industry. They were certainly a lot less "fake" that those which came before! I don't know what you have against Mweb, but they're the good guys in the uncapped situation, not the bad guys. Yes, they might not be as good as your (I'm assuming) R1250 account... but that's because they cost R539! Do you say that a VW Golf is a "fake car" just because you can buy better, more expensive ones? NO! Ridiculous!

I clarified it several times after that. If you want to insist on making something it is not, it's not my fault you prefer to be in a confused state.

Actually I doubt he will say anything. Are you an OpenWeb subscriber? Why should he tell you? The deal was made with me. I took the initiative to ask for it.

I have no problem with the after hours only. I have no intention of raping the line 24/7. I fully understand the need for business hours prioritisation. I have always gone on record as saying that. My family needs to use the internet too. No, the difference is that the uncapped accounts which existed before did not have these Draconian AUPs. They were truly uncapped because you could actually use them in an uncapped manner. Hell, even if you wanted to max it out during the daytime you could, albeit at a lower speed. And nobody would ever tell you that you were downloading too much, or abusing the line, or bypassing shaping policies or all that other crap that Mweb invented. But hey, you get what you pay for. If you are happy with Mweb then more power to you. If you want to buy a vehicle that is crippled in some way, or comes with ridiculous usage restrictions, then go ahead.

It'd be hilarious if Openweb was selling you an uncapped Mweb account at R999 - trust me, the way you describe your internet usage, you wouldn't know the difference!

I clarified it several times after that. If you want to insist on making something it is not, it's not my fault you prefer to be in a confused state.

Actually, you re-iterated it later in the thread

I think you are a bit confused there. I'm not on the OpenWeb account that you think I am. There is no FUP and no contention on my account.

and then kind of half-admitted defeat, but never explicitly said it, later on.

PLUS you don't even know what account you're on! Just because you don't know what the FUP is, doesn't mean it doesn't exist!

You're so full of BS. But that's okay. Good for a saturday evening laugh!

Mweb's AUP is pretty much standard. What you describe sounds like you used Mweb during a SEACom outage, and back in the day, if you remember, people were kicked off Uncapped Express for violating the AUP using VM's to make multiple connections to get past the daytime speed limit.

I didn't bypass shaping in anyway yet I received a warning from MWEB. I think now that they have the numbers they'll maximise profits by booting off anyone who averages less than R10/GB.

What was the warning? Can you pastebin.com it (after taking your name out)? ... Would be interesting to see one first-hand. EVERYONE I know has changed to mweb, and they aren't exactly light users. You must really (on purpose or by accident) done something to anger them... it can't be related to the amount of traffic you use. One common thread through all these warning/booting rumours (most are said without proof, and I'm a massive skeptic) is that Mweb really don't care how much traffic you use.... in that sense they are truly uncapped.

FUP = F***ed Up Product. Especially from Afrihost or Axxess.

I've used Axxess and although their Uncapped Express+ is a bit expensive( when you add in the telkom line rental), it's a great product if you want uncapped.

+1000000. No ISP, especially Mweb, will kick you off just for ****s and giggles. I suspect everyone who's going "lolz they booted me off" are either bull****ting entirely, or they know very well what they did wrong.

What do you mean especially MWEB? They're the only ones I know of who have actively been doing it.

.. and I read most of the ISP feedback threads.

Well, CLAIMS they were booted off unfairly. I'd still like to see some of the notices sent out - would help the community at large out.

I'm very skeptical - we've had one person admit on this very thread they say good things about a certain ISP to get discounts, and that same person seems VERY outspoken (and misinfomed) about how bad Mweb is... I require some kind of proof to believe claims - remember that before Mweb reinvented uncapped (both consumer, and they're also pioneering uncapped hosting) they were a horrible ISP, so there's a lot of angry people left with axes to grind.

Tinfoil hat time - people out to bad mouth MWEB with no reason?

And I request the exact opposite, I'd like to see proof that MWEB are so great... and not throttling to death, and not giving people the boot who are not bypassing shaping intentionally.

I know when I was with them I barely managed about 100KB/s... usually getting around 50KB/s on a 4MB connection... moving to Openweb was leagues better, but unfortunately the account required to much maintenance for me.

Unfortunately for you, no one needs to prove anything to you - if various people have CLAIMED to be booted of the network, its most likely true... whether they bypassed shaping or not - I still have to read about another ISP doing this.

In fact, Openweb even attempted to assist me in getting better speeds on shaped protocols during office hours.

I REALLY want to know the name of this "true" uncapped account you keep going on about. I want to see "1:1 contention" on a page without an FUP, then I'll tell Mweb to go shove their account. The best on OpenWeb's site seems to be Gold and Platinum and they're not what you describe. I know one of those 2 is just a resold Altech account.

I am also dying to know what service you on... Every internet service is contended unless you paying a good sum of money for it to get 1:1. For one you will never get this on ADSL as Telkom will contend it on the exchange - especially busy ones and there is not a thing you can do about it.

The evidence supporting this is right here in this thread!

I'm not asking for the documents as proof to point and laugh, I'm asking for them to help out the community. If you've been cut off, either you can be a dick about it and not tell anyone what happened and just moan about it, so that they fall into the same hole and also be cut off, or you could take 5 seconds to post the message somewhere and help out everyone.

The fact of the matter is, these are public forums, and if you've been on the internet long enough, you'll know that you pretty much assume it's BS until there's a good reason not to. This doesn't just apply to this Mweb discussion, but to EVERYTHING on public internet forums.

They've given their reasons? (as have I)

The email MWEB sends out has been posted numerous times? Its generic.

Nope, guess again.

My point all along... even since Mweb launched their first fake uncapped account is that with a bit of careful shopping you can avoid all the unpleasantness and get yourself a proper uncapped account. Then there doesn't have to be so much whining and complaining. Go back and find that first thread when Mweb launched this product and you will see my predictions there. I can download as much as I want with no shaping, no threats, no throttling, no line speed reduction. I enjoy the full speed that my ISP gives me (when the Telkom ADSL network plays along), and in two years I have had no warnings or cut offs whatsoever. Yes, I pay a bit more than pretty much everybody else (R999) a month. But you get what you pay for. If you want the same thing talk to your ISP.

So when MWEB didn't give you an "uncontended" account because you sung their praises on MyBB you now have sour grapes toward them and would rather sing that of Openweb because they made you believe you have an uncontended ADSL service? Think again please. I for one have tried the Openweb Gold account and Mweb uncapped does outperform it especially during office hours. Openweb is more snappy when browsing but downloads and online backups are not their thing. This is in my personal opinion and experience.

I am a bit annoyed to hear that some people are receiving "benefits" for singing the praises of some ISP's on these forums. For one this is supposed to be an open forum with credible info and feedback on it - for opinions not to be skewed by indirect influence on members that comment here. Its almost like corruption - scratch my back and i will scratch yours... WTF

So because of one "benefit" you will mislead thousands...

This is the warning I received (it's a 4mbps account):

Dear MWEB Customer
This email serves as a notice regarding your MWEB ADSL service.

Your current ADSL usage pattern shows repeated instances of prolonged download sessions at line, or near line speeds which is placing an undue burden on our network and is not in keeping with our Acceptable Usage Policy.

Please acknowledge receipt of this notice within 24 hours, indicating your intention to rectify the situation. It would also be helpful if you provided us with some feedback on the activities you were engaged in so that we can advise you on the choice of a more appropriate product to suit your specific needs.

Failure to comply with this request will result in additional warnings being issued and will ultimately result in the cancellation of your service.
The account downloads exclusively from usenet (Astraweb) and is quite heavily shaped during the day. The maximum speed that I've seen during peak on a weekday is 1.2mbps but typically the speed is 800kbps between 10am and 6pm. This is nowhere near my max line speed of 3.5mbps. Right now I'm only downloading at 640kbps. I only see full speed when the shaping is relaxed after hours, so one would assume that they relax the shaping because network demand is low, so I cannot see how my usage then would put a strain on their network.

My usage over the last year in MB:
November, 2011 441726.79
October, 2011 476841.29
September, 2011 303958.23
August, 2011 168142.94
July, 2011 238419.39
June, 2011 299353.94
May, 2011 18611.68
April, 2011 132090.72
March, 2011 150005.46
February, 2011 131205.45
January, 2011 339331.50

So everything else is the same except my usage and suddenly I get a warning. I asked them for more info of when I download at anywhere near line speeds and I'm still waiting for feedback.
