Uncapped ADSL acceptable use policies compared

So everything else is the same except my usage and suddenly I get a warning. I asked them for more info of when I download at anywhere near line speeds and I'm still waiting for feedback.

and this is where the vague part of their FUP comes into play.

So when MWEB didn't give you an "uncontended" account because you sung their praises on MyBB you now have sour grapes toward them and would rather sing that of Openweb because they made you believe you have an uncontended ADSL service? Think again please. I for one have tried the Openweb Gold account and Mweb uncapped does outperform it especially during office hours. Openweb is more snappy when browsing but downloads and online backups are not their thing. This is in my personal opinion and experience.

I haven't used Mweb in years. I would not touch them with a barge pole. I never asked them for anything. Your jealousy is very unbecoming.

Once again, everyone is ignoring the fact that the only remotely "fair" Fair Use Policy is MWEB, the only one on the list that gives you actual uncapped. But like they say, haters gonna hate. Or in this case, haters gonna ignore.

I agree, been using Mweb uncapped 4MB for about a year, no problem well seeded torrents come down anything from 150Kb/s to 400Kb/s during peak hours, have no complaints with Mweb.

This is the warning I received (it's a 4mbps account):

Thanks for that - nice to see someone returning to facts and getting over the bashing. I did a google and it looks like one or two other guys have got this message and an mweb rep says "They'll look into it" .. .would be interested to see what their reply was, as they didn't reply in forums.

I'm an Mweb user and have downloaded some pretty spectacular chunks in my time (250+gig Million DB database, 300gig openstreetmap dumps) and haven't got a warning. It'd be really nice if we could get info on this "excessive usage" and what triggers it. Although I'm a happy Mweb client, I'm also a fickle consumer, and will jump ship in a heartbeat if they get silly :)

At least we have options now!

Looking at his usage, I would guess the flag is between 350-400gb two months in a row.

Yep, it's extremely frustrating because I played by the rules.

+1 to competition, looks like I'm taking my money to WebAfrica soon.

WebAfrica's open terms are refreshing, but the problem is that even though they're nice and open about what they're doing, the base offering becomes poo because you'd have been soft-capped long before you got to the point Mweb or anyone else would have cared. And the soft-caps are bad enough that you'd get capped downloading a game from Steam. And therein lies the crunch - how bad is their account once you've hit today's/this week's rolling window? How awful will it be once lots of users are using it? You're back in unknown territory, possibly throttled to oblivion, so are no better off, and having been told "we might have to throttle you to oblivion" doesn't make it any easier to swallow :)

Your earlier posts that you were talking BS in were deleted?! Wow. You know they've been quoted, and removing the original post doesn't actually make any difference?

Okay, the penny just dropped - you don't want it on record admitting that you're an Openweb shill, and will probably say the people quoting your fabricated it, if it is brought up.

Look, I removed them because I made a mistake. I said uncontended when I should have said less contended.
Now that has already resulted in one idiot making another thread based on that mistake.
Now you are trying to make a mountain out of a molehill.
I have never been paid to mention anyone on this forum.
For you to push this further now is just wrong.
You begged me to explain the situation to you, and I did and now it is just making problems for everybody.
Leave it alone please.

I will, after I mention that NO it wasn't a mistake, you actually defended your position on UNCONTENDED. But that post was deleted. And you explained nothing. You were evasive and were the main builder of said moutain.

Um no, actually you persisted in making the mountain, even after you said you were done with it.
I admitted the mistake and corrected what I meant. Now you are driving this to the point of absurdity out of some kind of weird personal vendetta.
Is it because I dissed your beloved Mweb. Sorry, I will not apologise for my own personal opinions on ISPs and products.

And MWEB have responded (emphasis mine):
Thank you for your feedback.

MWEB reserves the right to establish policies concerning the use of it's services and to manage our network for the benefit of all our subscribers. Please see the MWEB Acceptable Usage Policy available at http://www.mweb.co.za/legalpolicies/GeneralPage/AcceptableUsePolicy.aspx

When we mention prolonged sessions, we are referring to using the maximum capacity (or close to) of your line for bulk transfers for several days. That pattern of usage is not in keeping with the terms and conditions of the product, which clearly state that you are not to behave in such a manner as to place an unnecessary burden on our network.

The abuse process is triggered by examining the long term behaviour of customers and as only a tiny percentage of our customers exhibit patterns of behaviour which warrants the sending of these warnings, we do not believe that it is in keeping with the spirit of our uncapped products to outline a set of rules for all customers to follow or to specify bandwidth/data limits per day/week/month. There are no preferential times we could specify for doing bulk data transfers.

Should you wish to continue with your current usage pattern, you may trigger further notifications with the end result that the account would be terminated. We would need to see a significant drop in these prolonged sessions to avoid any further notifications.

If your intention with this shaped product is to conduct heavy/bulk data transfers 24/7, then this product is not suited to your usage pattern. Our "Internet Addict" products, which are Unshaped, are suited to heavy transfers. Please see http://www.mweb.co.za/productspricing/InternetAccess/ADSL/InternetAddict.aspx
Once again they claim, without substantiation, that my account downloads at close to full line speed for days when I told them that it does not. WTF? And apparently you can get into trouble when your line goes at full speed because they relaxed the shaping.

Screw you MWEB, I'm not changing my "behaviour" and you guys can cancel my account if you wish.

Like I said, they seem to be the only ISP pulling this BS... its uncapped, but not.

Didn't the CEO of Mweb state that customers would only be cut off if they bypass shaping?

I guess they had a change of heart. Now the question is, do I go out with a bang? :D

And 2nd warning received:
Dear MWEB Customer
This email serves as a notice regarding your MWEB ADSL service.

Your current ADSL usage pattern shows repeated instances of prolonged download sessions at line, or near line speeds which is placing an undue burden on our network and is not in keeping with our Acceptable Usage Policy.

Please acknowledge receipt of this notice within 24 hours, indicating your intention to rectify the situation. It would also be helpful if you provided us with some feedback on the activities you were engaged in so that we can advise you on the choice of a more appropriate product to suit your specific needs.

As this is your second warning, failure to comply with this request will result in a final notification being issued after which we will initiate steps to cancel your service.

And I'm currently downloading at a blistering 240kbps :wtf:

Log a dispute with ASA...

Apparently your uncapped isn't uncapped...and keep a log of your connection running at less than half of line speed.

haha, See you made a serious mistake. You bought an uncapped product thinking that it was uncapped!

Be more careful next time when you read the product description! :p

I just went to the ASA website and I saw that I can submit a complaint via email, so I think I'll submit the complaint including all the articles in which MWEB said they don't boot users for the amount of gigs that they shift.

Really happy that the 'cheap uncapped' market has become competitive, keeps isps in check, I suspect that's where digichili and Screamer failed, now many Telkom, Webafrica, Mweb, Afrihost all balance the heavy down loaders between them unlike when Digichili and Screamer were the only uncapped accounts. Isps seem to have stopped hiding behind the unsustainable rhetoric, personally happy with Mweb seems to currently suits my download requirements. Will let other isp accounts run for a few months before even considering switching from experience from the past. I really do not need a unshaped account. Lol at people defending and attacking isps, just because something works for you, does not mean that it suits everyone.
