Uncapped ADSL bundles - price comparison

Ok, enough. Can MyBB not get an account from each ISP and setup some kind of benchmark system? Setup each ISP to download 24/7 using different protocols, so we can see when shaping/throttling occurs. These comparisons are no longer really beneficial to us.

This whole testing would need to take place in some form of controlled environment though. Needs to be a 10Mb line, stable as a rock, and all ISP accounts need to be tested using the same line. Cape Town, Durban, Pretoria and JHB should be tested.

Good Idea! It definitely needs to be tested in different locations (Cape Town, Durban, Pretoria and JHB), as I know different ISP's shape different locations differently. The tests should be run over a set time and should be set to download random data using a download accelerator - as that will give a more accurate connection limit. I believe that a test like this will be extremely useful and will once and for all help us see what is going on with the internet of South Africa.

Also - the accounts should not be registered under "My Broadband", but rather under random names so that the service is not prioritised by any ISP. Business/Normal accounts should be tested.

They can compile speed graphs which can be used to show where and when people are being shaped/throttled and how much data has been used.

EDIT: These can be weighed up against use cases.

Mweb: Throttles individual users after xx number of GB over 30 days
Afrihost: Shapes the across the network to reduce load

I am not overly worried about getting a perfect comparison. The point is that you include a Citi Golf in the same price list as sedans. I am not convinced that the MWEB "standard" is a bad product for its intended usage case - frankly there are better capped products that are in the same pricing and taking the softcap from TI the TI products of 10gigs and up are actually in the same class
 
it would be a massive undertaking, but this is why mybb is here, right?

buying an uncapped product based on price is no longer valid. its actually misleading.
 
The AUP speed on Mweb 2mbps is 28kb/s.

If you do more than that for 30 days then you will be in breach of the AUP.
 
openweb is not on that list
but they are awesome

so far i did around 80gb on 4mbps
i know its not alot for 4mbps
but i never have a prob with them

i did 120gb with my 2mbps a few months ago
also no probs

they need to get openweb also on lists like this

This. If you are a hardcore downloader AH is great. For everyone else Mweb is the cheaper option. I'm on a 4Meg MWeb using 80-100Gb/month which is more gaming and torrents than I can watch. Had no letter and speed is great.

4mb and you only dl 80 to 100 GB? not dl much then.....

They're still cheap. Saying that though they haven't introduced anything competitive with the recent upgrades so i should be looking for a new ISP in the new year.
 
They are not cheep, if you want decent service from them you need premium, like I had for the last 3+ years.

apparently if you have a 4mb line you have to have a 4mb account what nonsense is this?
 
Let me explain how stupid Mweb is. If you are on a 4mbps premium account with a 440GB [-]cap[/-] "threshold" and you use half of it (220GB) then downgrade to a 4mbps standard package you will get spammed with threatening AUP abuse emails every day until your last 30 day usage drops to below the 110GB [-]cap[/-] "threshold" of the standard package.

The smart way would be to handle the [-]cap[/-] "threshold" on a percentage basis when you migrate, but not at Mweb.

Another reason why they zuck the ballix is their premium accounts are not even on the same level as slightly cheaper options from the competition. Currently I am using a 4mbps account from Afrihost and it much better than what Mweb Premium offered me.

As I said before, they were great when they came out, but shoddy web hosting and blunt force [-]cap[/-] "threshold" implementations makes them very unattractive as of late.

the one day i managed 18,8GIG now this shoudnt be possible with a 1mb account dl torrents.

Ed. under perfect line conditions a 1mb account/line can do 11,06 GB per day.

Uncapped accounts need to be compared on price per MB based on a potential continuous 30 day usage. This would normalise the numbers as throttled accounts would register a few Bytes usage for the days on which they are capped.
