Uncapped ADSL for R159

The longer Telkom takes, the more mind-blowing their deal will have to be to cause any noticeable tremors. Here I refer to Telkom Internet specifically, not any line stuff. And then WA will have to come in with a sustainable earthquake to shatter the broadband arena.

Appears IS and MWeb have really messed with Telkom and WA's grand plans...

WebAfrica? Are they still around? :o

Well it seems the choices are there now we should look at who offers the least shaped and restricted "uncapped" service.

"We are confident that we will have a uncapped service for under a R100 before the end of the month."

What will happen when WACS lands next year? Bring it on with unlimited at -R50.00. I'm staying with MYISP - until a lower price arrives.

Not quite. I suppose for some people this will hold true, but for me the cheapest is best. I don't care much for shaping since I use email and web (http) far more than anything else.

I've been browsing around their website and still no sign of any AUP... Anybody seen anything?

"Even for R 159 a month the contention ratios must be heavily against the user - how can myisp come out with an offer like this when the big guns have gone within 20 bucks of the mweb offer.

This cannot be the REAL thing."

I am at the moment on their R20 /gig pakage and I get quite a good speed. Usually 320+ out of the 384 line.

Frankly you can make an uncapped product any price you wish, it boils down to contention, lets say the raw cost of 1Mbit of bandwidth is R6750 all in.

You can make a "premium" service and content it at 10 to 1 making it R675 per user
You can make an "ok" service at 25 to 1 at R270
You can make a "basic browser" service at 67.5 to 1 at R100

All that happens is you have stricter AUP's the higher your contention ratio. You may let downloads go wild on the "premium" service and tolerate them to a lesser degree on the "ok" service but on the "basic browser" service the moment they step over the AUP guidelines you throttle the hell out of them or tell them to find a new ISP at the end of the month as you will no longer provide them service.

I have got a feeling this is going to be a perfect service for the mom and pop crowd, MEGA shaping for torrents etc. For those services you will have to stick to other ISP's

Even on the other ISP's - prepare to be shaped to death ! The only way these ISPs can restrain their costs is to limit high volume users by shaping. These "great" offers would become "unpractical" soon and might lead to a lot of complaints. I would rather pay more and get about 10GB UnShaped - knowing I rely on the speed of certain functionality when doing my work on-line.

Lets just hop MyISP have a user friendly AUP and that it's shaped during the day and unshaped afterhours!
Is there a MyISP rep that can answer some of our questions about contention ratios and the AUP?

The bottom line is at R159 practically anyone can afford an entry level uncapped account. It's fantastic.

Perfect grandma account. Now they don't need to work out whats more, a KB or a MB. The idea being no more topping up.

You want to pay less for less shaping, think about it this way the cheaper it gets the higher the contention ratio gets. And yes the worse the shaping gets.
