Back in the days when there was only Vodacom and MTN, Vodacom was known as the cheapest network, I was in high school and not everyone had a cellphone, we used Vodacom, unlike MTN, their starter pack was cheaper and it came with airtime, they also introduced packages like Vodacom4U, which was per second billing and MTN didn't have that kind of packages that made it possible for ordinary people to afford calling on a cell phone. Alan Knott-Craig was at Vodacom, and he made it possible for ordinary South Africans to own a cellphone, Vodacom has so many users today because their products were cheaper.
I live in Olympus, right at the end of Pretoria East, we have never had 3G, No video calling and skype since I moved here in 2008, When you call Vodacom they will tell you they don't have a cell tower here and it will take a while to have coverage in my are, I got fed up with this and ported to Cell C, not perfect but I'm happy, I don't have problems with Skype, I now use both 8ta and Cell C. I'm not gonna waste money. Now they have lost another CEO, it smell funny, and I won't eat it.
