I found the "grip of death" reduced the bars on four out of four iPhone 4's (MTN staff units). In each case the signal started out at 3 bars, reduced to 1 bar... but the phones still made calls no problem on one bar.
I should have clarified when I said it only affects a few, I did not mean a few phones. It affects every iPhone. I believe they feel that in everyday usage, it only affects a few uses, and most people never hold their phone that way.
It does create for an interesting debate on whether it is okay to sell a less than product, if you argue the less than factor is not impacting most people.
Reminds me of the case where Fish shops were selling cheaper fish, labelled as expensive fish. Did it taste less great?
