Vodacom iPhone 4 Pricing Unveiled

I found the "grip of death" reduced the bars on four out of four iPhone 4's (MTN staff units). In each case the signal started out at 3 bars, reduced to 1 bar... but the phones still made calls no problem on one bar.

I should have clarified when I said it only affects a few, I did not mean a few phones. It affects every iPhone. I believe they feel that in everyday usage, it only affects a few uses, and most people never hold their phone that way.

It does create for an interesting debate on whether it is okay to sell a less than product, if you argue the less than factor is not impacting most people.

Reminds me of the case where Fish shops were selling cheaper fish, labelled as expensive fish. Did it taste less great?

No thanks. These prices seem a bit extortive and all things considered, a contract actually looks like a better deal. Heck, you can get an HTC Desire for R6000 and it's a pretty damn good phone too.

In the end we as the consumer need to vote with our wallets. Namibia got the iPhone4 before South Africa http://www.mtc.com.na/iphone4.php, darn that small print I thought it was cheaper 3k pay in plus 400 per month. :str:

Why is it that Namibia does not have an official apple website? Or am I not looking in the right place?

It all comes down to preferences " Audi, BMW, Mercedes". Choose your poison, my drug is iPhone for now, its a dynamic platform with regular firmware updates and apps that makes your device feel like new each time until you hit iOS 4 with your 3G and its time to upgrade to the 4 and we all know next year there will be a new incarnation, but what the hey. :jok:

I'm not sure if anyone mentioned it already, but MTN offers many more deals than those listed in the article. I looked at the table of packages at the iStore on Sandton Drive yesterday, but annoyingly they didn't have extra copies and they didn't feel like making a copy for me. There were Anytime 200, 350, 500, 750, 1200 and 1500. all of them either with 150MB or 300MB data per month (makes about R50 difference) and you can choose to pay in or take a higher monthly price. So, everyone should be able to find something that suits them.

The lady I spoke to said they are almost out of stock.

And with iOS 4.1 you'll have a fast and responsive iPhone 3G again.

I am still not convinced about the iPhone 4's antennae....and someone mentioned that they reproduced the grip of death on all the iPhones in the store.

Was looking at the Samsung Galaxy S, but it seems Vodacom only has the 8GB version in SA now....and Samsung has announced last week that there's a dual-core cpu phone coming out soon. Think I'll play the waiting game.

My 3G can still make calls, do email, surf the web and use Trapster.com, I am happy.

Vodacom has lost the plot a while ago in my opinion. I can't wait for my contract to finish to make the move to MTN (or even Cell C).

Vodacom cares about 2 things - advertising and sport sponsorships - customer care and product value is an afterthought. Time to cut the giant down to size...

What is it with people and the iPhone? Is it all about the hype Steve Jobs can generate? The phone is just pretty and has facetime app, other that than it is beat by the HTC Desire by ages. (all of them even the previous ones)

Have you used an iPhone before? Have you used HTC Desire? It's easier to criticize when you've only done a poor man's spec-sheet review

Happy, yes. Just got one to replace my business phone. Overall feeling though - a little bleh. Thats normally the case with iPhones - you plug them in, they restore, and you carry on as per your previous iPhone plus a few little extras you will most probably seldom use. I fiddled for 5 minutes then got on with my life. The software upgrades are far more interesting because there is actually something new to look at. If you are coming from a different platform, you most probably will enjoy the phone more.

I have a Samsung Galaxy S as my private phone. Was upgraded from a HTC Hero. Now that was more of a challenge - but that just goes to show how successful the Apple platform is in terms of reducing fragmentation between devices and keeping things simple. You have to fiddle a lot with the Galaxy to get it the way you want, and there is bloatware all over it.

My preference? <my opinion> I would give the iPhone a slight edge if you have to connect to corporate Exchange systems (it does hardware encryption which the Android platform doesn't), or if you play a lot of games (the Android games are mostly rubbish). For the rest they are pretty much the same. If you have time and are a techie, you will most probably enjoy the Galaxy more. You can customise it ad nauseum. If you just want to plug and play and get on with things (and at the same time have a completely seamless upgrade path into the future), you will most probably enjoy the iPhone more. They really are two different approaches/philosophies. My wish : that either of them would offer twin sim capability so I didnt have to carry to phones around, but alas, that will never happen...
