Web Africa Home Uncapped Feedback

And that's the thing about WA. People seem to be scared to use it. If you pay upwards of R1000 a month for an Uncapped account, you don't want to have to worry that the size of a single download is going to push him into the throttled pool.

I mean, say a client buys the entire WoW collection online from the Blizzard store. That's about a 30gb download. The client won't be able to download it in one go.

Who wants to deal with ridiculous **** like that? Isn't the point of having an uncapped account being able to download something whenever you feel like it without any worries?

Yup, and that's why (together with said "home uncapped is not recommended for gaming" crap) I bumped to Mweb last week. That way I can grab GW2 without being shot at.

I understand that true uncapped isn't really a viable option for us yet, and that we have to have some form of control over usage, but WA is just excessive. I mean, with a capped account at least you don't have to worry that downloading a single file while degrade the quality of your account.

WA's uncapped truly seems to restrict the user much more than is necessary. I wouldn't deal with that crap. I'd just switch over to Mweb, where they don't bog you down with useless and archaic usage limiters (rolling windows) that are designed to make life unpleasant for clients.

Huh? I thought WA initially said that gaming would be prioritised on their Home Uncapped? So they're basically chopping and changing it as they see fit?

I mean, home uncapped?! So you need to get business uncapped for game? Where the hell else would you game if not at home?

Also, about this ad they sent out last year...

Unlimited data? Does that not constitute false advertising, seeing as WA's uncapped is clearly limited? Unlimited would mean that you can download as much as you want, whenever you want.

WA employs a rolling window system that throttles users who go over a certain threshold, thereby limiting how much they can download. Sure, you won't get cut off from your internet if you go over the limit, but you're still being limited in terms of how much you can download, thereby limiting your data usage.

Lemme quote from my support ticket:

I do however see that your currently utilizing a Home ADSL Uncapped service. This service type is not recommended for gaming purposes and as such I would recommend testing with a home pro service.
#2
We do not entirely recommend a Uncapped service for gaming, however this should not result in intermittent gaming.

So either they change their tune a lot or they simply lie. This is Jeff's post from an early thread when the service was just announced. Something having a High priority on a product does not exactly strike me as being something which is not recommended for that product. Unless I am missing something.

Don't see why our Uncapped accounts aren't suitable for gaming. The gaming priority is set to High, so don't see how it can't be suitable for gaming ;)

Then again, according to this pic,

Gaming only gets medium priority on Home Uncapped.

I'm confused now.

Indeed.
Back at OpenWeb I used to be on the DSL-H backbone (on WA's Gold network), a friend of me as well. Gaming was impossible - frame drops were a daily occurrence. I thought nothing of it, and come WA, the same thing happens.

Yip they even offered me a home pro account to test with. which is totally bullsh))t.

The other thing is do you guys also experience unreachable address like every 15 mins where no websites response?

I love the bold "streets ahead" - talk about marketing abuse

Spot on. Something I find very annoying, but if you read through the posts, this is common practise

Any idea as to what the Home Pro is? I don't see any such packages.

On capped accounts you pay double (I am open to correction as to the double) and you are supposed to get superior bandwidth. For me I felt this was a rip off. WA claims to be a superior ISP and one does pay premium rates, but then if you want a decent service, you must upgrade at a serious premium - just another way of trying to make money. Not sure how this works on uncapped.

OpenWeb Gold's DSL-H uses the WA Gold bandwidth. While it worked it was great, but gaming was a no-no and those windows ground me down really hard <-- I was constantly throttled. So I can see how it feels like a rip-off.

But hey, Mweb is R90 cheaper and worth R90 more. :p

Here is some consumer feedback for webafrica on the uncapped accounts:

1. Please don't email me at 1am in the morning.
2. Please don't email me warning me that I've gone over my 6hr cap - yes, I get the rolling windows and read it when I signed up but sometimes (Diablo 3 Beta weekend for example) I would like to download 4GB in a short period of time. Rather warn me when I've gone over my 7 day cap.
3. Don't email me about excessive downloading during the "All usage during off peak hours, that's between 12am and 6am" times - am I not allowed to download during these times thus getting these 1am warnings?

There should be options in the dsl console under Email to disable these emails if the customer wishes imo.

Starting chatting to a "live" support person on their site... still chatting an hour later... he only responds in-between calls on his phone... pathetic...
