Web Africa Home Uncapped Feedback

I'm wondering why MWEB can give high priority to gaming on their uncapped products but WA can't? I thought they had this awesome custom-built prioritization software

For the most part WebAfrica has been perfect for me when it comes to gaming. Mweb on the other hand left me with a lasting (bad) impression because of the following which happened far too often, even on local servers, when I was with them.

And I know that video is old and Mweb might be better now but to date I have never experienced something like that on WebAfrica. I've since switched to Dota 2 and playing on EU servers has been near flawless and now with GW2 out even that has been a pleasant experience for me.

So yeah, I don't have a whole lot to complain about other than the inconvenience of a dead connection when someone in my house plays pirate.

I've been fairly happy with WA's uncapped service because usually when all my mates are complaining about Mweb giving them **** I'll be sitting there smiling because I am unaffected. Latency in games has been amazing but that said I have been experiencing a rather strange but very inconvenient problem and I was wondering if it's been happening to anyone else?

Basically if someone in my house, for reference sake we'll call this person my sister, downloads something using Bittorrent even if only at a few kilobits per second it completely kills my connection! I can not browse the internet, I can not do anything except maybe run a ping from the command line. In some cases it is so bad that the network icon in the Windows system tray shows a yellow exclamation mark indicating there is no internet connectivity! I have a 4Mbit line yet downloading something at an average of 10Kbps completely maxes it out to the point where no one else can use it!

This isn't isolated to someone else downloading and me trying to browse, even if I just open a bittorent application the throttling or shaping or whatever the hell it is starts. I mean nothing can be downloading but by mere virtue of the application starting to communicate with DHT / bittorent servers I lose the ability to browse the net. This happens irrespective of my usage limit, which I don't even think I've ever hit, as it is almost the end of the month and this is what my usage generally looks like...

Seriously WTF WA?

Hi Xiphan,

Are you still having issues? PM me your client code and details so that I can get our ADSL guys to investigate.

Out of interest sake, are you using Wireless or Wired connection from the DSL router to the PCs at home?
Also what ADSL router do you have?

Ok since I can't think of a better place to ask this, now that the 384Kbps upgrades have started, what should customers with a line Web Africa do to enjoy these upgraded speeds?

I've been trying most of the morning to "force" my upgrade like the guys here are doing: http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/469536-384-Kbps-to-1-Mbps-Upgrades

For the most part I think I have made it worse (now shows 2Mbps instead of 1Mbps in my account), however after getting off the phone with Telkom I now I have a 1Mbps line, but for some reason Webafrica won't upgrade my Home Uncapped account to 1Mbps.

I got so excited when I saw that we could just phone up Telkom and get the upgrade, I got even more excited when my line was actually upgraded to 1Mbps but then I got really upset when my account with Webafrica wasn't upgraded. :(

I believe Justin has everything sorted for you over on our forums?

Hi NomNom,

As per your post on our forums we have managed to sort out the upgrade of your data to the 1mb service.

Please test and let us know if there any further issues.

All sorted now thank you!

Do WA customers have to pay extra to get their data to 1mbps?

Apparently it's R10 more per a month than the 384kbps which would bring it to R289

About a week's worth of decent performance on my 2mbs Uncapped WA account and tonight it seems up to its slow tricks again? :(

Any idea whats going on?

Hi there just want to know if the Home Uncapped accounts have Freezone for Steam downloads?

FreeZone isn't available on our Uncapped accounts unfortunately.
You'll need to schedule your Steam/ other downloads during Download Plus. This is set to change though with our upcoming network move - which will see a better experience all around.

EDIT: Sorry, corrected my post. Monday blues :/

To correct froot here quickly, FreeZone works perfectly fine.
The issues that were experience more than 6 months ago have all been resolved and sorted out. This includes FreeZone and Download Plus hours.

If you're using Steam though, you'll need to setup a limiter to only download from the WA servers - which will be allocated to FreeZone.
We've got a walkthrough on our forums to help out with this :)

So Jeff, you are saying that FreeZone still applies to Home Uncapped?
