Web Africa Home Uncapped Feedback

HI, when will international latency be sorted out, its been a week now and its impossible to Game on this account as theres Huge Packetloss in games like LOL/HON and it just get worse and worse.

Exactly how I feel. Huge amount of packet loss playing league of legends. unplayable with webafrica.

This is so sad as my main use for this account is gaming, I dont even download with this account nor have I Reach my threshold.

Been almost a year with mweb and I'd yet to see my speed go to 512k for my 4mbs and I do anything from 100 up too 300.

I wish people would come out their caves and do away with the term Heavy user and for once think outside the box of theirs that anything more than 20gb must be warez, surely there is nothing else to do than download porn and other illegal things, I mean really

+1

MWEB shapes p2p during business hours, they don't touch http at all, ever...

This is off to a very rough start for Webafrica, first the capacity issues (has that been resolved ?) combined now with the widespread effect of online gaming. With more and more games moving to having some aspect of online playing a major role, some of the highest selling games are online focused, combine the console and PC sales of course and you're looking at an aspect of a service that cannot be ignored. No longer is it just a few games that would be affected by this its the most popular ones ! (aside from skyrim).

Webafrica came to the party late with Uncapped and before December I heard nothing but great things and experienced nothing but great things as well. To me this was critical as they had to compete with a cheaper service (MWeb) and then a service slightly more expensive at R700 being OpenWeb's gold. Not expensive enough to make one change unless they saw better service coming. I am pretty sure that everyone who is not a Webafrica subscriber and was thinking about it is reading these threads and definately deciding not to use it or to wait it out (unless they just use normal browsing).

Then moving back onto the subject of packet loss and gaming, whats going on here ?

The only online game I could find that didn't require a massive download was Second Life (I'm generally a xbox user) and lucked out to find it had a packet loss meter, over the course of 30 mins or so it was just bouncing up and down the whole time, at 1am it became so bad that I didn't even bother trying to figure the game out anymore because my avatar couldn't even move.

Verdict about that game though is seems to be IRC 2.0.

Why would your speeds decrease?
First, we will NEVER deprioritise users if we have spare capacity on our network, unlike other ISPs. In addition to this, you will only get slower speeds IF you don’t play by the rules. Even if your service is deprioritised, browsing remains awesome

Ok so please define "deprioritise users" here because when it comes to services its kind of obvious that ports themselves have priority's and who knows what causes the packet loss. So are you talking in regards to the rest of the network ?

Webafrica please fix this !

EDIT:
I wish people would stop going on about "Awesome Speedtests", the max throughput is generally always awesome with WA... when it comes to http of course, the latency's low and if I do a continuous ping to overseas I get no packet loss (yet this is happening in games to people ?) so its not my line, eg a stream of 190ms or so to europe over 15 minutes 0% loss.

It's as soon as you hit something that's a game or news whatever, that's when all goes pear.

Your right about waiting it out. At first everyone was saying things that sounded good, low latencies for HON for instance, which I am interested in, also international pings for gaming. Now I see the last 3 pages of ping times spikes and the effect that throttling actually HAS (not the 50% they said.. 0.26Mb/s is useless) getting to the limit. Its still the same than Mweb, I have cancelled Mweb because of their BS ping times.

I wanted this!, I was going to join in January. So much for their praised network, this is how to turn away potential customers :(
I wonder where to now from here for me.

THIS was what I so carefully wanted to see, the impact on gaming. The reps here say that 'pings look good', but it definitely is not the case. Your customers are the ones that clearly see its not true.

Sheesh. I've been monitoring this thread because I'm on a WA capped product currently and was thinking of going uncapped. But after reading all your comments, my capped product rules, so I'll be staying thanks.

I still choose to believe these issues will be sorted in a month or two. When MWEB and others started with their uncapped products it followed the same pattern. I believe this type of undertaking is no small thing for an ISP, and am quite willing to give them time to sort out the wrinkles over the next couple of months, and then revisit it as an option. I have been with WA off and on over the past years, tried other uncapped options, yet I have come back to using WA every time as a result of my positive experience with them. Nothing from my experience over the years suggest that they won't get this right.

Just my 2c worth.

I thought if the network was busy they would shape/thorttle/deprioritise the line. But if this continue, then I'll swap back to my 60Gig account at afrihost.

Cmon WA.. make me proud. 600-700meg in 6 hours and then line drops to from 100Kbs to 50Kbs WTF. That is not cricket. And the 12-6am window is so small... I cant even get 1 steam game downloaded (4Gig) in that time frame.

I am willing to give Webafrica the benefit of the doubt here, its why I'm not doing any form of hate speech and just stating things as they are. I like the feedback we get and being in the dark is what grates me the most when things are pear shaped.

I know when its nearing end of Month people will be re-evaluating which ISP they should be with and if Webafrica doesnt sort out their problems they will lose a lot of subscribers, the problem here is that the clocks ticking because if everything was peachy for one week and then not the next what does it say for stability ? Will people chance it if the networks only been running fine for a week ?

It's basic mindset of being able to have your fun, use the internet how it should and the people who are sticking in the thresholds are suffering even though they were designed to protect them so the thought "whats the point" comes to mind.

I really REALLY want Webafrica to succeed, their service impressed me enough to set the wheels in motion to move my line to them and I loved their service when it first started but how are they going to succeed if in a months time performance increases because a subscriber base drops ?

EDIT:
People have posted since so may as well write a bit more.

MarkFace is an example of what I mentioned, people not coming due to problems when they are needed.

MFour I do agree with to a degree, Webafrica should have learnt from the other ISP's and the only thing that should have been a problem should have been if capacity was used up, according to WAJeff's post more was supposed to have been gotten on monday ? Uncapped's cut throat now.

TelkomUseless is basically experiancing a trend that caused other people to leave MWeb for example, why should anyone Now ?

My personal experience:

If you stay in their limits you're fine, and their limits aren't too harsh considering you have 1/4th of the day to download as much as you want ( I seem to do download around 5GB in download+ which is 250KBps, not ideal but not terrible).

While you're not throttled the service is more or less the same as a WA home capped account, that is to say normally great but seems to have rough patches every now and then.

If you're throttled you're dead in the water with regard to games, pings sky rocket to over 1000m and then dip to 180ms and so on. It's a roller coaster. Speed depends a lot on where you download from and what a protocol you use but HTTP seems to give around 60KBps on a 4mbps account (1/7th maximum speed) rendering streaming impossible but browsing unproblematic.

I've done 45GB this month and haven't been throttled yet, so I'll probably get around 250GB within their throttling limits.

I agee. I don't want to badmouth WA. I read this thread , looked good. Thought WA would know they gonna get massive influx of clients... but looks like I'm wrong ?

And I already cancelled my Afrihost account because paying for 2 acc is expensive. arghhh...

@Loopin

The problem is the people within their threshold are experiancing this (that includes myself) and THAT is not acceptable at all especially when it did not start out like that.

@TelkomUseless
I think that this thread is doing very well in the patience of the users who post in it as it hasnt turned into a raging flamefest over 200 posts into it, it just shows that Webafrica has customer loyalty and trust.

Please Webafrica, the trust is there... how about opening up on this issue so we can at least know ETA's or whats wrong ?

Morning guys,

Our additional capacity has come online, I believe this was done during our Maintenance period on Sunday night already.
Onto the gaming side of things, the feedback over on MyGaming does seem to be a little different - and there hasn't been a mass of escalations from our Support guys showing that gaming is horribly slow.

Regardless of whether or not you're over your threshold - gaming protocols shouldn't see ping times spike up to 1000ms+.

Has anyone contacted our support guys about this just yet?

EDIT: Sorry guys, it seems as though our capacity upgrades have been delayed by a bit. I'll post up again when I get some more details on this.
We also have a large upgrade planned for the 15th December :)

HI, I hope this can be sorted out as myself really like the performance that I could get out of this account while it was working perfectly.

Mainly Games like Hon/SC2/Dota are effected where you struggle to connect to there Chat servers, Matchmaking doesint always connect and Periodic Jitters/ Mini Disconnects and constant spikes.

Yet the Ping is fine and I also find that sometimes to Certian Pingtest .net servers that its unreachable.

I think that if everyone who has the problem logs support queries Webafrica will have some indication as to the scale of the problem as opposed to forum posts.

The order of the day is to log those queries !
